The Andes Mountains line Argentina's western edge, forming the boundary with Chile. The highest peak, Aconcagua, stands 6960 m (22,834 ft). Gently rolling plains extend eastward from the base of the Andes and descend gradually to sea level.
The Pampa , treeless plains that include the most productive agricultural sections of the country, occupy much of this region. Patagonia , south of the Pampas, is dry and desolate.
At the southern tip of Argentina lie the islands of Tierra del Fuego
Argentina has a temperate climate, except for a small tropical area in the Northeast and a subtropical region in the north.
The higher Andes and Patagonia are cold, while in most coastal areas temperatures are moderated by the ocean. Rainfall is high in the north, and quite low in the south. Argentina's main natural resource has been the agricultural land of the Pampas. Productive offshore deposits of petroleum and natural gas are also important.

      Argentina's History
The word Argentina means silver in Latin. The country was named after silver because, when shipwrecked Spaniards washed up on Argentina's shore, the native Americans brought them gifts made out of silver. edit
      The rule of Spain
Before the European invasion of the Americas, Argentina was rather sparsely populated. Different Native American tribes lived in small villages, and Argentina bordered the Inca empire, but large parts of the country had few inhabitants. The Spanish arrived in 1502 on a voyage of Amerigo Vespucci, the mapmaker that America was named after. Bueno Aires became a Spanish colony in 1580, and was originally a part of greater Peru. It became an important port after 1776, exporting leather leather and other goods.

Argentina forms the eastern half of South America's long, tapering tail. It's a big country - the eighth-largest in the world, and the second-largest on the South American continent. It borders Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay, Brazil and Bolivia. The topography is affected by both latitude and altitude, and is accordingly varied. Argentina's territory would cover a third of Europe and is as long as the US in wide. spanning 1.100.000 square miles. The population is around 36.200.000 of which 2.700.000 live in Buenos Aires City.
The topography of Argentina is varied. To the west is the Andes, to the north the vast forested plains of the Chaco, to the south the vast Pampas and in the far south Patagonia. Dress should be tailored to the area being visited. Seasons are reversed. so when it is winter in the US it is summer in Argentina and vice-versa.
The country can be divided into four major physical provinces: the Andes to the west, the northern lowland, the central Pampas, and Patagonia. Argentina's climate ranges from subtropical in the north through humid and steamy in the center to cold in the south. Buenos Aires , a city open to every ethnic group and so European in character, Iguazu Falls, the site of great waters, Bariloche's typical Alpine scenery and the great Patagonian Andes with the land of glaciers. A country of many worlds, surprisingly easy to visit. European influences are in every aspect of Argentina's art, architecture, literature and lifestyle. As a result, there are many important art museums and galleries in the city, and it has a vigorous theatre community. Probably the best known Argentine popular culture is the Tango - a dance and music which has captured the imagination of romantics worldwide.
