of Argentina
Background:
Argentina is the second-largest country in South America (after Brazil); its people are a fusion of diverse national and ethnic groups, with descendants of Italian and Spanish immigrants predominant.
Following independence from Spain in 1816, Argentina experienced periods of internal political conflict between conservatives and liberals and between civilian and military factions.
After World War II, a long period of Peronist authoritarian rule and interference in subsequent governments was followed by a military junta that took power in 1976.

The language and religion of the Argentines define their cultural characteristics. Their ways of living and their expectations and aspirations have been largely molded by their environment. Almost all Argentines speak Spanish. However, it seems to have an Italian accent, both in pronunciation and vocabulary. These peculiarities are particularly noticeable in Buenos Aires and the Pampa region. In the northerly parts of the country, a more typically "Latin American" version of Spanish has greater prevalence. Over a dozen native languages are spoken in Argentina by just a handful of natives. Some of the languages are Quechua, Mapuct, Guarani and Toll. Most Argentines are Roman Catholics, and until recently the constitution still required that the president of Argentina be Catholic. The Argentine church is still pretty conservative. The hierarchy has been slow to adapt to the Second Vatican Council, although some priests and laymen have been influenced by social christian and even liberation theology. Despite the Church hierarchy's aggressive campaign against the Difunta Correa's veneration, hundreds of thousands of faithful Catholics make annual pilgrimages and offerings in the San Juan province.

http://www.unescocat.org/cultmon/dossiers/maputxes.html
