If you're looking for a short-term summer program in one of Latin America's most exciting cities, look no further than the Summer Language and Culture Program (SLCP). The SLCP is a six-week program based at Universidad de Buenos Aires, the largest of Argentina's public universities. Part of the program includes visits to cultural sites and activities with IFSA-Butler staff. Buenos Aires is a city with almost unlimited things to do and see, including museums, tango lessons, movies, and performances in all areas of the arts. In addition, IFSA-Butler staff lead two weekend excursions, included in the program fee, to sites of interest outside of Buenos Aires.
Housing
IFSA-Butler arranges a host family for your six-week stay. Because most of the culture of Latin America revolves around the extended family, living with a host family is one of the best ways to immerse yourself into the culture and language of Argentina.
Courses and Credits
You'll take two or three courses, including a mandatory advanced Spanish language class. You also can take a literature class focusing on contemporary Argentine and Latin American literature and/or an Argentine social history class. All classes are taught in Spanish by faculty from UBA, but the courses are specially designed for American students. The SLCP requires two years of university Spanish or equivalent.

BellaOnline's Hispanic Culture Editor Traditional Christmas in Argentina Christmas in Argentina In the continuing series of Traditional Hispanic Christmas Celebrations, we will begin by looking at Argentina. The traditional Christmas in Argentina is so like ours in many ways. Yet there are ways in which Argentina is unique. In many ways it has developed it’s own individual traditional ways for celebrating Christmas. So much like our own Christmas, the holidays are celebrated with great joy. There are the common ties that most cultures that celebrate Christmas seem to share. There is the tradition of Nativity scene and Christmas tree, gift giving, banquets. It is a time of family and friends so much like our own. The Nativity scene is set up in the house, depicting the birth scene of Jesus. The tree is decorated with candles lights and ornaments. All the presents are placed under the tree and await the morning of Christmas. On the 24th much like other traditional Hispanic families, everyone waits until late at night to eat and the presents are opened at midnight. The devout Argentineans attend church services, which is a long standing and shared family tradition. Much like our day, religious devotion and church attendance take up a great deal of the day. On Christmas Eve, family and friends gather to share a dinner feast that usually includes great celebrating.

Culture Argentina Argentina offers an incredible variety of all possible climates and sceneries: tropical jungles, frozen Antarctica, vast deserts and snow-covered mountains. On top of this the capital Buenos Aires - a fabulous city renowned for its sophistication or derided for its neo-European culture - also known as the Paris of the South. Geography Only 34 million people live in this country which covers an extension of over 2.7 million square km. (1 million sq. Miles) - more than eleven times larger than the U.K., five time larger than France, four times the size of Texas- spanning from the sub-Antarctic tundra in the south to the subtropical jungles in the north east and the towering desertic Andean peaks and plateaus in the north west. It is the eighth largest country in the world but comprises less than 0.6% of its total population. Although temperate climate is predominant, Argentina offers a wide variety of climes : The barrier of the Andes, with a mean altitude of 4,000 mts. (12,000 ft.), infringes deeply on the northwestern provinces, defining the border with Bolivia and northern Chile. This arid northwestern plateau drops sharply towards the east, giving way to the Chaco flatlands. The scrub forests, flood plains and subtropical swamps of the Chaco region create another boundary to the north, with Paraguay. Northern Argentina is at the same distance from the Equator as the Bahamas.

Argentina, South America So, Argentina - I am in love with this country. From the fact that strangers wish you good luck and give you a kiss on the cheek for each goodbye, to the amazing looks and warmth of the Argentine women...I mean, the Argentine people...I could describe for you the beautiful Iguazu Falls on the border of Brazil, Patagonia's plentiful peaks/rivers/valleys/hikes, Bariloche's lake region beautiful for skiing in the winter and world class fishing in the summer, etc. - but I will not. The following made a bigger impact on me personally than the gorgeous terrain. My friend was visibly disappointed when I told them it was not for me, after which they went back to the driver and sat down on the floor, drinking this drink, and passing it back and forth to the driver. Then another passenger (Argentine I presume) went to the front to drink some. It took about 2 minutes and there were 5 people all in the front sitting in a circle-like fashion just talking and passing around mate. Complete strangers, but hanging out like they were close friends. I had the thought immediately of 'this would never happen in my hometown as people would be too worried about using the same straw from others and be having germ/bacteria issues'. But there in Argentina this was not a concern as these people were having an apparent great mate session with stories and smiles; sharing a pastime of the country together like old school buddies. Mate: a beautiful custom in an equally beautiful place.

Summer 2005 First Summer Session (late May to early July) and Second Summer Session (early July to mid-August) Dear Student, This webpage contains all the necessary information about one of the most exciting study abroad programs offered by the University of Texas Austin: the UT Study Abroad Program at the Universidad Nacional de Cordoba (UNC) , Argentina. After a careful evaluation of different possible sites and partners, the Department of Spanish and Portuguese has chosen the Universidad Nacional de Cordoba as the optimal place for all interested students to acquire further knowledge of Spanish, Hispanic literature, the rich culture and artistic tradition of a colonial city such as Cordoba. In creating this partnership, our main departmental goal was to combine the most rigorous and professional program with a historical place located in an attractive region in South America.

Argentina History and Culture
HISTORY Europeans arrived in the region with the 1502 voyage of Amerigo Vespucci. Spanish navigator Juan Diaz de Solias visited what is now Argentina in 1516. Spain established a permanent colony on the site of Buenos Aires in 1580, although initial settlement was primarily overland from Peru. The Spanish further integrated Argentina into their empire by establishing the Vice Royalty of Rio de la Plata in 1776, and Buenos Aires became a flourishing port. Buenos Aires formally declared independence from Spain on July 9, 1816. Argentines revere Gen. Jose de San Martin, who campaigned in Argentina, Chile, and Peru as the hero of their national independence. Following the defeat of the Spanish, centralist and federalist groups waged a lengthy conflict between themselves to determine the future of the nation. National unity was established, and the constitution promulgated in 1853. Two forces combined to create the modern Argentine nation in the late 19th century: the introduction of modern agricultural techniques and integration of Argentina into the world economy. Foreign investment and immigration from Europe aided this economic revolution. Investment, primarily British, came in such fields as railroads and ports. The migrants who worked to develop Argentina's resourcesespecially the western pampascame from throughout Europe, just as in the United States.
