CULTURE Probably the best known manifestation of Argentine popular culture is the tango - a dance and music which has captured the imagination of romantics worldwide. Folk music is also thriving. Sport is extremely important to the Argentines and soccer is more of a national obsession than a game. Argentina won the World Cup in 1978 and 1986, and the exploits of Diego Maradona, (the most famous Argentinian since Che Guevara) have kept soccer fans, paparazzi and columnists busy for the past ten years. Meat dominates Argentina's menus, and 'meat' means beef. Mixed grills (parillada) are apparently the way to go, serving up a cut of just about every part of the animal: tripe, intestines, udders - the lot. In this vegetarian's nightmare, Italian favourites, such as gnocchi (noquis) , are a welcome alternative. Exquisite Argentine ice cream

Sure, we know you are here for the powder, but hey, you can ski in dozens of countries. What makes our trips so memorable, aside from the powder skiing in August, are the locals, their culture, and perhaps some of the best food on Earth!
If the closest you’ve come to Latin American culture is drive thru tacos after a day on the mountain, you should be traveling. Some of the best experiences in foreign adventure travel come from local culture. PowderQuest Tours knows that culture can not be absorbed from a tour bus window or leading you around holding your hand. We get you deep into the Andes where we not only meet, but also spend quality time with the locals.

Culture European Influence Argentina's culture is widely influenced by its European immigrant community. The two languages of Argentina are Spanish, typical of South America, and Italian. Many italian foods have become customary in the country while Italian influence can also be recognized in the nation's music and art. This cultural mesh is an argument for globalization, where two communities can come together and become one. Both cultures are still recognizable, but the peace and opportunities gained from the joint effort are most beneficial. Recognizable Communities in Argentina Principal indigenous peoples : The Quechua and the Mapuche. Other groups: The Matacos, the Tobas, Jewish, Anglo-Argentine, Japanese, Chileans and Bolivians.

Europeans first arrived in the territory, which became Argentina, in the early 16th century. After becoming a viceroyalty of Spain in the 1770s, Argentina achieved independence in 1816. Between the mid-19th century and 1946, Argentina swung from civilian to military rule and from radical to conservative policies. A coup resulted in the rise of Lieutenant General Peron Sosa as president in 1943. After winning the election of 1946, Peron instigated a policy of extreme nationalism and social improvement. He founded the Peronista movement and after being overthrown in 1955, continued to direct the movement from his Spanish exile. The ensuing administrations failed to secure the full allegiance of either the people or the trade unions and Peron was triumphantly re-elected as president in 1973. On his death, a year later, his wife, Isabelita Peron, took over but chaos ensued and she was deposed by a military coup in 1976.
At the 1999 elections, the ex-Buenos Aires mayor, Fernando de la Rua Bruno, won a narrow victory over the Peronista Eduardo Duhalde. De la Rua stood for the center-left

Waiting for justice in Argentina: Culture of Impunity
By David Sax Every Monday morning, a group gathers outside Argentina's federal courts in Buenos Aires. Their numbers shrink each year, their hair has grayed, their children have likely moved abroad. Yet the group, Memoria Activa, says it will not stop until those responsible for the July 18, 1994 terrorist attack on the Asociacion Mutual Israelita Argentina, a Jewish community center, are punished. Nine years since a car bomb took 85 lives and shattered hundreds more, justice remains a distant hope. Justice delayed and denied is a recurrent theme in Argentina's history. After World War II, the country admitted Nazi war criminals, offering safe haven in exchange for money. Of these, only Adolf Eichmann was brought to justice after being kidnapped by the Mossad and brought to Israel. When Argentina was plunged under military rule, twisted justice was dealt by disappearance, torture and summary execution. Even after that traumatic period in the nation's history, impunity remained the legal norm. While imprisoning the junta's few leaders in 1983, President Raul Alfonsin pardoned lower ranking officers and soldiers; the torturers and murderers whose hands broke flesh. His successor, Carlos Menem, then pardoned the old dictators and led the nation into an era of crime and corruption unparalleled in Argentine history. It has been left for Spain to seek the extradition of the worst of the offenders under the dictatorship.

The culture of Argentina is as varied as the country's geography or its ethnic mix. Argentine culture has been primarily informed and influenced by its European roots. Buenos Aires is perhaps the most Europe-like place in South America , due both to the prevalence of people of Italian and Spanish descent and to conscious imitation. There are nevertheless native American and African influences, particularly in music, art and cuisine. Buenos Aires and other cities show a mixture of architectural styles imported from Europe and modern buildings. In the case of older settlements (and of older preserved neighborhoods within cities), modern styles appear mixed with colonial features, relics from the Spanish-ruled past. Museums, cinemas and galleries are abundant in all the large urban centers, as well as traditional establishments such as literary bars, or bars offering live music of a variety of genres.

    Culture, and Arts of Argentina
Argentina is a nation with a vivid Spanish heritage, soundly affected since the 19th century by European, prominently Italian, immigration. A blithesome interest is maintained in the nation’s history, particularly as symbolized by the Gaucho or cowboy. Europeans also shaped literature in Argentina. In the fine arts, an example to be emulated has been France; only in folk art has there been crucial influence from Native America cultures.
Any Literature in Latin America was to be written in one of the Romance languages, primarily Spanish, Portuguese, and French, from the 15th century to the present. Latin American literature is tremendously varied in its scope. It encompasses narratives by early explorers and settlers, which tell of their encounters with the land and people of the New World; satiric writing that comment on colonial society and it imitation of Europeans trends; and works that bring together Native American themes and imagery in an effort to express an experience that is uniquely Latin American. A continuing predicament for writers arises from the desire to define a distinct Latin American identity while not appearing narrow or provincial in terms or European literary standards.
Latin American writing can be divided into three broad periods: colonial literature, from the time of European conquest to independence; the literature of independence, which began in the early 1800s in most of Latin American; and modern literature, which began in the late 1800s and was accompanied by the comprehension of a distinguishing national voice, at some point in the 1900s. Additionally, a native tradition, which began before the European conquest, consists of literature in Native American languages.
