Software Architecture for Software-Intensive Systems
What is Software Architecture?
The software architecture of a program or computing system is the structure or structures of the system, which comprise software elements, the externally visible properties of those elements, and the relationships among them.
Why is Software Architecture Important?
Software architecture forms the backbone for building successful software-intensive systems. An architecture largely permits or precludes a system's quality attributes such as performance or reliability. Architecture represents a capitalized investment, an abstract reusable model that can be transferred from one system to the next. Architecture represents a common vehicle for communication among a system's stakeholders, and is the arena in which conflicting goals and requirements are mediated. The right architecture is the linchpin for software project success. The wrong one is a recipe for disaster.
Software Architecture Knowledge and Expertise
The SEI's Product Line Systems Program is a leading source of software architecture knowledge and expertise. That knowledge can be put to work for you in several ways:

Today's Standards Making Architecture
The architecture of standards-making organizations in the telecommunication and information fields has undergone fundamental change over the past decade. The old architecture was simple and well-bounded around a handful of bodies with explicit internation al, regional, national, and subject matter jurisdictions. These standards-making bodies were virtual sovereign, following slow, deliberate, time-honored processes that remained essentially unchanged for the preceding 130 years since the first multilateral telecom standards conference, and engaged legions of standards professionals whose careers often began and ended in a single committee. Over the past ten years, that old architecture has been fundamentally altered. Constellations of new bodies now exist with diverse new constituencies and boundaries, and all are competing in a global standards marketplace. Even the form of these new bod ies differs dramatically from traditional organizations. Their range includes:

Online articles that provide an extensive overview of Web Services, related standards, and technologies that can be used in service-oriented architectures. There are nearly 400 pages of articles. Services to help your organization decide how to use Web Services in a service-oriented architecture. Product listings to connect you to the vendor sites for each of the technologies.
Example enterprise Web Services architecture
The following diagram is an example of a service-oriented architecture using Web Services. Click on the yellow boxes below to obtain more information on a subject.
Getting started
It is difficult to keep up with the rapid changes in technology. The advent of Web Services and service-oriented architectures makes "keeping up" all the more important, because these technologies are fundamentally changing the way we build our internal systems—those that support our organizations—and how internal and external systems will interact. We are on the cusp of building "plug-compatible" software components that will reduce the costs of our software systems at the same time increasing the capabilities of the systems. Sure, you have heard that promise more than once before. And more than once, the delivery fell short of the promise. But, as with such promises, they will come true some day. That time is now.

    Course Description
While no businesses succeed based on their architecture or space design, many fail as a result of inattention to the power of spatial relationships. This course demonstrates through live case studies with managers and architects the value of strategic space planning and decision making in relation to business needs. The course presents conceptual frameworks for thinking about architecture, communication and organizations. This course is offered during the Sloan Innovation Period (SIP), which is a one-week period at the MIT Sloan School of Management that occurs midway through each semester.

The American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) was established in 1956, and since then, AIAS has considerably broadened its scope. AIAS currently represents more than 30,000 students of architecture in more than 155 schools. At most schools with architecture programs, chapters directed by and for students offer local and national programs that compliment the universities' curriculums. The AIAS serves to promote excellence in architectural education, training, and practice, and to foster an appreciation of architecture and related disciplines. As a student's advocate, the AIAS promotes the quality of education.

Hurricane Katrina Update: As with most disasters, census figures reveal that Hurricane Katrina disproportionately affected the poor and the disadvantaged. According to an analysis done by the Associated Press: _Nearly 1 in 4 people in the hardest-hit areas lived below the poverty line, approximately double the national average. _4.5 percent of those in the disaster area received public assistance compared with 3.5 percent nationally _ One in 100 households in the most affected areas didn't have decent plumbing (running hot and cold water, a shower or bath and an indoor toilet), twice the national average. _In one of the worst hit neighborhoods in the heart of New Orleans, the median household income was less than $7,500. Nearly three of every four residents fell below the poverty line, and barely 1 in 3 people had a car.
