Museums by Yoshio Taniguchi A subtle handling of light, an innate sense of form and space - some of the trademark touches that make Taniguchi Yoshio's architecture special are at the same time often the most difficult for people to grasp, and the easiest to overlook. By avoiding sensationalism and self-important grand statements, his architecture has also, by extension, largely avoided grabbing the headlines. Not that Taniguchi is worried. He has earned a career's worth of attention since scooping the architectural commission of the century - the renewal of the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York. Taniguchi's vision is currently under the microscope at the Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery in Hatsudai. "Museums by Yoshio Taniguchi" is based on an exhibition that opened at the MOMA at the end of last year. While nine museums were the subject of MOMA's show, these have been supplemented by three more exhibits for the Tokyo exhibition. All the building projects featured are museums in Japan except for the centerpiece of the exhibition - Taniguchi's design for the re-furbished MOMA. Materials documenting the new-look MOMA, the project that forced Taniguchi into the international spotlight, take up one of Tokyo City Art Gallery's two first-floor rooms.

After ten years of planning and preparation Sweden's new Museums of Modern Art and Architecture are opening in Stockholm in February 1998. At last one of the finest collections of modern art in Europe will have enough space to do justice to its permanent collection, while also housing a rotating series of temporary exhibitions. It will also mean a great expansion both in space and capability for the neighboring new Museum of Architecture, extending both its international outreach and its public activities. With state-of-theart technology, inspired design, and all the amenities of a modern day public institution, the two museums are certain to occupy a central place in the cultural life of Sweden. Ninety Years in the Making The concept of a museum devoted wholly to the display of modern art dates back to 1908, when it was first proposed by the Swedish Association of Museum Curators. All that came of the idea then was a room designated for modern art at the National Art Gallery. It was not until 1958, when the Stockholm Navy Base was moved from Skeppsholmen island, that things began to happen. When the navy's former Drill Hall became available, modern art was finally housed in a facility of its own. Promises were made that a "real" museum would eventually be built. By 1980 there was still no adequate place to display the growing collection, and Swedish artist Eddie Figge decided it was high time to do something about it. By 1985 she and Olle Granath, director of Moderna Museet, had formed an alliance to realize their dream of bringing modern art to the public.

The firm's work encompasses architectural design at all scales-from urban planning to furniture design. Leeser Architecture's designs emerge from cultural, social, and technological patterns present in the site or situation they are engaging. Their projects frequently use technology to reframe our understanding of architectural conventions and production. By shaping and then harnessing our awareness of these forces they create complex and richly varied spatial experiences. Leeser Architecture maintains an "open office" which engages in collaborations across conventional disciplines. Working closely with other architects, artists, graphic and landscape designers, and engineers has allowed the office to remain streamlined and focused while also taking on large-scale projects.

    The Corcoran Gallery of Art
    , 17th Street NW 500, 20006 Washington, DC USA
    Participating Artists:
    Frank O. Gehry
For decades, architects, artists and curators have argued about whether a museum should be an active or passive container, a background or a foreground for the museum’s contents. Renowned architect Frank O. Gehry has brought the museum distinctly into the foreground. FRANK GEHRY, architect: designs for MUSEUMS, a multimedia exhibition, showcases Gehry’s extraordinary design contributions and celebrates both his completed buildings as well as several still to be realized museum projects. designs for MUSEUMS is on view at the Corcoran from October 2, 2004 through February 21, 2005. A complementary exhibition, organized by the Corcoran College of Art + Design, of Gehry’s furniture designs is also on view at the Museum.
Using models, design drawings, plans, photographs and video, FRANK GEHRY, architect: designs for MUSEUMS explores how form follows function in unexpected ways. From complex exteriors that reflect the diversity of the activities that take place inside to interiors that illustrate how the architecture interacts with the objects––and the visitors––in the museums, the exhibition shows how Gehry’s designs challenge convention, yet brilliantly meet the needs of museums in the twenty-first century.
FRANK GEHRY, architect: designs for MUSEUMS highlights four existing museum buildings and several as yet unrealized museum designs. The completed projects include: Vitra Design Museum, Weil am Rhein, Germany; Frederick R. Weisman Art Museum, Minneapolis, MN; Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao, Spain; and Experience Music Project, Seattle, WA. Those that have not yet been completed include the Corcoran Gallery of Art; Guggenheim Museum, New York, NY; Ohr-O’Keefe Museums, Biloxi, MS; and MARTa Herford, Herford, Germany.
