A large atrium, central to the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, culminates in an articulated skylight 22 feet high. Extended from either side of the atrium are two wings. Overall, the Kemper Museum measures more than 23,200 gross square feet. The main gallery, measuring 5,697 square feet, features selections from the permanent collection and is used for changing exhibitions. Smaller galleries feature rotating exhibitions, and a meeting room offers works on paper and other glazed works from the permanent collection. Works of art are always on view in the atrium and the corridors of each wing.
About the Architect
Gunnar Birkerts founded Gunnar Birkerts and Associates in 1963 and has since established a reputation as one of the country's foremost modernist architects. His many projects include museums, corporate headquarters, and government buildings for clients in the United States, Europe, and South America.
Born in Riga, Latvia, Birkerts trained in Germany and began his professional career in the office of the visionary modernist Eero Saarinen. Sharing Saarinen's affection for expressive forms, Birkerts is noted for architectural designs that are highly evocative and that emphasize the dynamic flow and illumination of space.

Beer made city famous but art, architecture are giving it pizazz
By Jane Wooldridge - Miami Herald Sunday, January 12, 2003 Milwaukee - If they could see this place now, Laverne and Shirley would tear the buttons right off their sweater sets. It sure isn't the Milwaukee those TV beer-bottlers knew. Sure, they still brew beer here - though most of the major breweries are gone, and a South African firm recently agreed to buy Miller. They make powertrains, too, for Harley-Davidson, founded here nearly 100 years ago. But if you're thinking of Wisconsin's signature city as more cheesehead hamlet than urban enclave, it's time to turn off the reruns.

HARVARD UNIVERSITY ART MUSEUMS AND HARVARD DESIGN SCHOOL LAUNCH DEPARTMENT OF ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN Million-Dollar Gift by Graham Gund Will Establish Architecture Exhibition Fund Harvard University Art Museums Name Adjunct Curator of Architecture and Design Cambridge, MA, June 11, 1999 - The Harvard University Art Museums announced that they are establishing a Department of Architecture and Design in collaboration with the Harvard Graduate School of Design. Noted architect and contemporary art collector Graham Gund has provided a $1 million gift to support architecture exhibitions at Harvard which will enable the creation of the new curatorial department at the Art Museums. Brooke Hodge, Director of Lectures, Exhibitions, and Academic Publications at the Harvard Design School, has been named to lead the new department. As Adjunct Curator of Architecture and Design, a newly created position at the Art Museums, Hodge will oversee programming and exhibition collaborations between the Art Museums and the Design School. The Department of Architecture and Design builds upon previous collaborations between the Harvard University Art Museums and the Harvard Design School, such as a 1998 exhibition highlighting the Villa Planchart by Italian architect and designer Gio Ponti at the Busch-Reisinger Museum. Future collaborations include an exhibition on European architecture in 1000 AD, which will be on view at the Fogg Art Museum in fall 2000; an exhibition on "Windshield," a 1937 international style house by Richard Neutra built on Fischers Island, NY, the only Neutra house on the east coast of the U.S.; and an exhibition on the influence of Le Corbusier on Japanese architecture of the pre-war and immediate post-war years, which was co-organized with the Kamakura Museum in Japan, designed by Junzo Sakakura, an important follower of Le Corbusier.

Latium is a mysterious land. It is a land of woods and pastures, hills and valleys, rivers and lakes, with as many as twenty-five nature parks and reserves. The land is washed by a blue sea, with a whole archipelago lying just a few miles off the coast.
It is a harsh land, which only seems to be unknown. In its heart lies Rome, the Eternal City, which calls people from all over to see its Roman ruins, Renaissance squares and baroque churches. Rome is a compendium, illustrating the evolution of architecture from Roman times to the present day.
Latium is the region that surrounds the city which a frame that is all history and landscape. The landscape is history in its own right, the product of men and men's activities, their thoughts and their imaginatiion, forming a symbiiosis of landscape, history and art. Hills and gorges, karst caves and extinct volcanoes, cliffs and caves by the sea, are perhaps the most artistic aspect of the work of nature; solitary sanctuaries and tumble-down churches, dead towns and little villages perched on high spurs of tufa, poles of art and faith bear witness to man's ascendancy over the environment. And since man's work is commonly considered an art, we may say that, in the variegated and complicated territory of Latium, man compares well with nature, equalling its beauty. Datatravel Srl
