Architecture A speech by HRH The Prince of Wales at the Corporation of London Planning and Communication Committee's Annual Dinner, Mansion House, London, 1st December, 1987 My Lord Mayor, Mr Chairman, ladies and gentlemen, it is an honour for all of us, My Lord Mayor, to be in this magnificent room. We are often struck by the splendour in which the City houses its first citizen and the generous surroundings in which it entertains its guests, coming as I do from the more modest surroundings of Kensington Palace - the servants' quarters, to be exact. But I know, My Lord Mayor, that all this splendour is not just for you, but expresses the commercial triumphs and the benevolence of the entire City of London. Last year, your Guest of Honour at this dinner was a Minister from the Department of the Environment, Mr William Waldegrave, who urged the city of London to continue to celebrate its commercial success by commissioning more wonderful buildings. Mr Cassidy has spoken of your achievements since then and, despite your recent setback, you have still accomplished the feat of adding an additional six million square feet of offices to the Square Mile. But that raises a problem, and it is this: how to create commercial architecture as effective as the Mansion House, or the Royal Exchange or Sir Edwin Lutyens' pre-war Midland Bank - worthy celebrations, I would have said, of the fruits of commerce. Can anyone in this room really claim that Bucklersbury House, the Stock Exchange Tower or Paternoster Square are creditable successors to those earlier buildings?

Those for the rich provide inspiration for the rest of us, but we need new models as society becomes more complex. The notion of house went through some strange transformations over the last hundred years. 'London's first blocks of leasehold flats have been built only quite recently', wrote Hermann Muthesius in his great book on the English house nearly a century ago. 'Should the custom become more widespread ... which at the moment seems unlikely this could only be a sign of economic recession and, even worse, would spell the demise of one of the best aspects of the English heritage.

Home Construction Training for Afghanistan - Phase I
by Dr. Owen Geiger - October, 2002
Introduction
Members of the US-Afghanistan Reconstruction Council (US-ARC) met with Builders Without Borders during Afghanistan Day in Washington DC earlier this year. At the request of US-ARC, we created a straw-bale building exhibit to demonstrate the feasibility of this type of natural building. After a very positive reception, Builders Without Borders was asked to submit this proposal to address the lack of housing in Afghanistan.
Natural building technologies are rapidly gaining acceptance around the world as more and more people discover the advantages. In the U.S., for example, straw-bale houses have been built under strict building codes in nearly all 50 states. Straw-bale construction is proliferating in Europe as well as Australia, Mongolia, Mexico and many other countries. Over 500 straw-bale houses have been built in China through a program sponsored by the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA). Next year this ambitious program will reach 1000 affordable straw-bale homes. This large increase in home building is made possible by a training program for project managers, who then train others to work in local communities. Their approach allows each community to adapt the technology, based on needs, local environmental conditions and aesthetic preferences.

Browser's Guide to Architecture: the NA Classification

The University of California, Berkeley Libraries' collections are arranged according to a subject classification system devised by the Library of Congress. Architectural materials are generally assigned to a section of call numbers beginning with the letters NA, although substantial related materials are found in TH (building and construction), NC (drawing and graphic arts), NK (interior architecture and design), GN (vernacular architecture), E-F (U.S. history, historic preservation), HT (city planning), K (architecture and law), LB (buildings for education), RA (hospital design), etc. For a detailed listing see the Library of Congress Classification Outline (http://lcweb.loc.gov/catdir/cpso/lcco/lcco.html). The following guide to the NA section will assist the student who wishes to browse this portion of the Environmental Design Library's architectural collection. Note that browsing a collection as large as the Environmental Design Library has considerable limitations: users will miss volumes checked out, in remote storage, in other libraries on campus, and in other classifications. Remember also that architects will need to use many materials beyond those classed NA, and that classifications change over the years, so a thorough search of your subject will require checking the Library catalogs: Pathfinder,

Some people will only look at a house plan if they like the exterior appearance of the home design. However, usually the exterior of a home plan can easily be changed. The changes to the exterior of a house design can be so dramatic that you won't realize you are looking at the same house. To change the exterior, you can use different windows, modify roof lines, and change exterior details.
Often, a skilled home designer can easily change the architectural style of a home plan to meet your preferences. Therefore, you may want to consider looking at house floor plans even if they are not the architectural style you prefer.
Shown below are two facades for the same floor plan. As you can see the fronts of these homes look nothing alike even though they have the same floor plan.
The floor plan of a home is the most important thing to look at. After all, you'll spend 90% of your time on the inside of your home. Find a floor plan you like and then modify the exterior of the home to suit your tastes. It's much easier to modify the facade of a home then it is to change the floor plan. Also, we offer a house plans modification service and can change the architectural style of a house plan.

Imperial Palace Overview Overview Chinese architecture has historically influenced that of Japan. In spite of this, there are still major differences between the two. One variation with Japanese architecture typically placed people on the floor to sit, whereas that of China had them sitting in chairs. This custom began to change though in the Meiji period (1868-1912). Another influence, besides lifestyle, is the climate. Japanese have to plan according to the climate and season changes. Since most of Japan has long, hot summers, the houses reflect that by being somewhat raised so that air can move all around. Wood is a popular choice for material because it adjusts well to earthquakes and works well with season changes (cool in summer, warm in winter).

China gave the world the Great Wall, pagoda roofs, screens, joints and other innovations of garden architecture. Yet that was centuries ago. Since then, China has been renowned for its concrete blocks. As the country turns to world-class talent to remake the Middle Kingdom as a modern showpiece, can China really replace crass with class?

"The Big Hole - yes, that would be a very apt name," the French architect says as he scans the partly excavated site alongside Tiananmen Square in the Chinese capital. Andreu's vision - a $300-million structure that is not so much a building as it is a futuristic bubble set in an artificial lake - has been repeatedly stalled by objections of Beijingers who derisively refer to it as the "alien egg." Others have not been so kind calling it a "Giant Turd." A series of project reviews have hampered development and no official date is set for completion. Andreu is undeterred. "This will be my most successful work," he predicts.

History of Philippine Architecture
by Architect Manuel D. C. Noche The history and culture of the Philippines are reflected in its architectural heritage, in the dwellings of its various peoples, in churches and mosques, and in the buildings that have risen in response to the demands of progress and the aspirations of the people.
Architecture in the Philippines today is the result of a natural growth enriched with the absorption of varied influences. It developed from the pre-colonial influences of our neighboring Malay brothers, continuing on to the Spanish colonial period, the American Commonwealth period, and the modern contemporary times. As a result, the Philippines has become an architectural melting pot uniquely Filipino with a tinge of the occidental.
The late national hero for architecture, Leandro Locsin once said, that Philippine Architecture is an elusive thing, because while it makes full use of modern technology, it is a residue of the different overlays of foreign influences left in the Philippines over the centuries: the early Malay culture and vestiges of earlier Hindu influences, the more than 300 years of Spanish domination, the almost 50 years of American rule, the Arab and Chinese influences through commerce and trade over the centuries. What resulted may have been a hybrid, a totally new configuration which may include a remembrance of the past, but transformed or framed in terms of its significance today.

The Architecture of
Wingfield Manor
By J. Alfred Gotch
Wingfield Manor rivals its more famous neighbour, Haddon Hall, in extent; but in some respects it is less interesting, inasmuch as it is more ruinous and has not the same variety of work to link it up with all periods from the thirteenth century onwards. Wingfield is practically all of one date, having been built by Ralph Cromwell, Lord Treasurer to Henry VI, about 1435-40. A glance at the plan shows how ample the accommodation must have been before the house was destroyed. There are two large courts: the outer (or southern) formed of barns, stables, guard-houses and other inferior buildings; the inner (or northern), of the hall, kitchen, and the chambers occupied by the family. perpendicular work, as also is the adjacent gable of the state apartment (Fig. 2). There is nothing to indicate where the hall fireplace was situated. The probability is that it was in one of the long side walls but, even as late as a hundred years after this time, fires were sometimes placed upon central hearths and it may have been so here.

Virginia Tech geography professor Joseph L. Scarpaci in the College of Natural Resources has made 43 study visits to Cuba in the past 14 years, often taking student and adult study groups with him. Scarpaci and his students explore Cuba's unique urban, historical, architectural, and cultural landscapes.
In the process of penetrating the heart of the country and the hearts of its proud people, he has brought some balance to how the world can rightly understand the Cuban citizen, out from under the dark shadow of Fidel Castro. The resilient spirit of the Cuban people might be almost matchless. Despite their enormous economic struggle and instability since the 1950s, they survive with an incredible inner strength and grace. "This is a good time in history to visit Cuba," Scarpaci explained to me and the rest of his last adult study group in 2003. "The country is at an interesting crossroads politically and economically." In the spring of 2003, 70 dissidents were arrested and incarcerated. Rebelling students would have been unheard of in earlier years. The students met with the U.S. Interests Section, a U.S. agency that provides consular and diplomatic services, but also promotes democracy in Cuba. The dissidents were given harsh sentences, resulting in an international outcry. But Cubans are courageous survivors, and the ones we met were friendly and hospitable. We thought of them in these terms as we listened to Scarpaci, and again, months later, when politics and the ever-present tensions shut the door on U.S.-Cuba travel even for scholars.
