Modern Architecture In the period after the Revolution the erstwhile Soviet Union at first encouraged modern art, and several architects, notably the German Bruno Taut, looked to the new government for a sociological program. The Constructivist project for a monument to the Third International (1920) by Vladimir Tatlin was a machine in which the various sections (comprising legislative houses and offices) would rotate within an exposed steel armature. A workers' club in Moscow (1929) had a plan resembling half a gear, and the Ministry of Central Economic Planning (1928-32), designed by Le Corbusier, was intended to be a glass-filled slab but, because of Stalin's dislike of modern architecture, was never completed. Its foundation later was used for an outdoor swimming pool.
Modern European styles of architecture were subjected to official disfavour in the Soviet Union in the 1930s, as Stalin's government adopted classical monumentssuch as Boris Mikhaylovich Iofan's winning design for the Palace of the Soviets (1931), which was intended to pile classical colonnades to a height of 1,365 feet and have a colossal statue of Lenin at its summit. With its gigantic Corinthian columns, the building for the Central Committee of the Communist Party at Kiev (1937) showed an overbearing scale.

    CHAPTER XV
    ARCHITECTURE AND TOWN PLANNING
    2. That modern architecture cannot be dissociated from town or community planning was a statement made in all the representations to us. At present, we were told, 54 per cent of Canada's population is urban, and the proportion is growing rapidly. It is increasingly urgent therefore that anyone who constructs a building of any kind consider the relation of the new structure both to the site and to neighbouring buildings actual and potential, a point strongly brought to our attention by a professional architect who referred to this responsibility both as a public duty and as architectural good manners. 3. On the general state of both architecture and town planning we received somewhat disturbing reports. Architecture, according to one group, although it has the greatest influence of all the arts on the manner of living, is largely ignored by the public. "Builders are creating across the breadth of Canada row upon row of architectural monstrosities in communities whose almost immediate pattern is one of decline and blight." The justice of such a forthright statement by a group of younger professional architects, if not accepted, is certainly not denied by older individuals and groups, professional and amateur, who gave us their views. It was submitted to us that architecturally the public in general

Transforming an old house into a new canvas Literally. Nendo turned an old house in Tokyo into a restaurant made from a sheet of canvas. Given a small budget, the group used a 200 meter sheet of canvas and wrapped the entire house, inside and outside including the table cloth and the chair coverings. The remaining canvas was used for cards and matchboxes as well.

Each year the review committee reads submissions and prioritizes them based on the new information they present, the role of fieldwork in research, the critical approach to material culture, and the model they provide in writing and research methods. The Cummings award is meant to reward accomplishments in the scholarship on vernacular architecture, stimulate more writing in the field, and encourage publishers to disseminate this needed research more widely. Abbott Lowell Cummings's exemplary record of field work and publication, particularly his magnum opus The Framed Houses of Massachusetts Bay, 1625-1725 (1979) remains an inspiration to us all and distinguishes this award. A Study of India's Construction Giant: The DLF Group
AECbytes Feature (August 11, 2004) In the last issue DLF Group , a veritable industry giant that is currently building about 4 million sq. ft. of residential property, 2.5 million sq. ft. of office space, and 500,000 sq. ft. of shopping complexes. We will explore what this massive construction activity takes from a technology standpoint in this AECbytes feature article.
Overview of the DLF Group The DLF Group is one of the oldest construction companies of India, dating back to 1947. It started as a family business, and continues to be so to this day: it is a closely held public limited company where 99% of the shares are owned by the family. It is currently headed by one of the family members, Rajiv Singh, who serves as the Vice Chairman. In the early years of the company, it was based in India's capital city, Delhi, where it catered to the huge influx of people that resulted in the doubling of the city's population almost overnight. Anticipating the growing need for quality housing of an expanding market, DLF developed close to 21 urban townships in Delhi. Today, these townships house nearly a million people. In the 1990's, DLF shifted the focus of its development to a suburb called

PEOPLE go to Japan and appreciate Japanese architecture. They go to China and become inspired by Chinese architecture. Tourists go to France and marvel at French architecture. If people would come to the Philippines, would they be able to find touches of Filipino architecture? The answer is, hardly. One of the few architectural firms that consistently designs Filipino in everything it does is Mañosa and Partners. For years, the "Mañosa signature" has become so popular that people would readily identify native-inspired structures contemporary or otherwise with the architecture firm.

Chinese Art and Architecture: An Annotated List of Recent Works in Western Languages
Architecture The historiography of Chinese architecture is less than a century old. The architectural profession did not exist in China. Buildings were erected by craftsmen who were also responsible for their maintenance. Their skills were handed down to their sons or apprentices for generations. Unlike painting and calligraphy, building was not regarded as one of the fine arts. Only two records of building practice survive: a twelfth-century manual, Yingzao fashi (Building standards), printed in 1103, and a 1734 manual, Gongbu gongcheng zuofa zeli (Engineering manual for the Board of Works). In the twentieth century, the literature in Chinese on architecture was written largely by two main groups. The earlier works were written mainly in the 1930s by the Society for Research in Chinese Architecture. The first 2 volumes of the Society s bulletin, published in 1930 and 1931, were devoted to the 12th-century manual, including translations of articles on the subject by western authors. The other group was young Chinese architects who studied abroad and became active in textual research and field work. With the help of artisans and craftsmen the group gained solid knowledge of methods and rules of architecture from the last two centuries, and they undertook extensive field work. The later literature was written after 1949 by the members of the dispersed society and others mostly published in the two journals

C.F. Hansen, 1756-1845, is one of the most important neo-classical architects in Denmark. His severe and simple, but very powerful style, inspired partly by ancient Roman architecture and Italian Renaissance building, found its expression already in his earliest work a row of houses for wealthy citizens in Altona near Hamburg, built in the years after C.F. Hansen's appointment as regional architect in the Duchy of Holsten in 1784. Several of the most striking and monumental buildings in Copenhagen are likewise the work of C.F. Hansen, who at the beginning of the 19th century was called to Copenhagen to take part in the huge work of reconstruction after the great fire of 1795 and the British bombardment of the city in 1807. Thus both the Town Hall and Law Courts in Nytorv (1805-1815) and Copenhagen Cathedral, Vor Frue Kirke (1811-1829), were designed by C.F. Hansen. He was moreover also entrusted with the rebuilding of the partially burned- down royal palace of Christansborg (1803-1833), where he skilfully and by simple means transformed the smoke-blackened Baroque ruin into a grandiose, neo-classical palace complex. The palace burned down again in 1884, but the domed palace church belonging to it (1829) still stands.

I have enjoyed his shows for many years. For those of you who have not seen this show, Bob Villa was the host for a TV program called "This Old House." Villa would line up a homeowner who wanted to fix up an old house, develop a plan for repairs, line up contractors to do the work, and typically find additional problems that would often drive the costs over budget. Homeowners would typically contribute their own "sweat equity" to get the house completed. He worked with master carpenter Norm Abrams who later developed and hosted his own show called "The New Yankee Workshop," in which he would lead the viewer through the steps to build replica furniture. Villa would also get various companies to allow filming in their factories so that the audience could see how products are manufactured. Tours of plywood, concrete block, window and door, kitchen and bath, roofing materials and other manufacturing plants, provided interesting entertainment.

    Contemporary Architecture in the UAE
After the discovery of oil and the economic prosperity enjoyed by the country, there was an urgent need to build new buildings to meet the new demands of the people. Planning departments were established to work on planning cities and villages of the country. Municipalities and Departments of public works were focusing on building public buildings and housing developments. An era of rapid change of the built environment has started. Social and cultural changes that are taking place in the United Arab Emirates are affecting all aspects of life. People are depending on cars and other means of transportation which causes the cities to expand rapidly. This uncontrolled expansion is transforming major cities into metropolitan areas and changing the traditional life style into a modern one.

    Public housing
After 1971 and the formation of the UAE, the government took the responsibility of providing houses for the citizens. The government constructed several public housing projects in different parts of the country. Houses were built and handed to citizens after completion of construction. The design of these houses was not suitable for the cultural values and needs of the inhabitants, especially Bedouins who were forced to settle in these projects. Some men married more than one woman, which doubled and tripled the number of inhabitants in the same dwelling. The owners had to make additions to the houses to satisfy their changing needs. The additions were informal according to the needs of each family.

    Economic Changes
Before the discovery of oil, the economy of the country was poor, primitive, and simple. It depended mainly on sheep herding and pearl collection. It could be described as “the pearl era” as opposed to “the oil era.” Besides pearl catching there were other minor sources of income such as fishing, trading, farming, and sheep keeping. The inhabitants were mainly belonging to one of the following groups: Bedouins, or Settlers. The social system was tribal similar to social systems found in the rest of the Gulf area. Their work ranged from fishing to farming to hunting to sheep raising. Bedouins depended on sheep raising moving from one place to another searching for water and resources. Some tribes were settlers such as Al Awamer and Al Manaseer who settled in the area of Abu Dhabi. Al Naim tribe lived in the desert area. During their travel, the Bedouins used to take their belongings and animals with them. The settlers were mainly fishermen. They also worked in pearl trading, and farming near the coastal areas. The farmers settled in villages by the desert oasis, such as Al Ain villages. After the discovery of oil, the economy changed dramatically. Oil became the major source of income for the country. The introduction of modern technology accompanying oil excavations and fast exchange with the rest of the world made the means of modern life available to the citizens. With the construction of oil fields, oil companies provided settlements for their workers and families. Following the production of oil with large amounts, the UAE became one of the large oil exporting countries of the world. During the Seventies, the economy of the country was booming and other economic activities were also flourishing including fishing, farming and trading.
