162. LISA: LCA In Sustainable Architecture
Providers of a life cycle decision support tool to calculate the environmental impact of a building. Also provides a range of impact attributes.
http://www.lisa.au.com
About LISA
LISA (LCA in Sustainable Architecture) is a streamlined LCA decision support tool for construction. It was developed in response to requests by architects and industry professionals for a simplified LCA tool to assist in green design. Currently LCA methodologies are too complicated and not widely accessible to designers and specifiers. Also, detailed LCA studies often divert attention from the key environmental issues, and tend to focus attention on inter-material competition, rather than on optimum construction systems. LISA is designed to:
  • Help identify key environmental issues in construction. Give designers an easy to use tool for evaluating the environmental aspects of building design. To enable designers and specifiers to make informed choices based on whole of life environmental considerations; ie life cycle analysis.
We are continually adding case studies, with the following currently under development:
  • Multi-storey offices High rise Wide span warehouse Road and rail bridges
At present only nominated developers are able to generate new case studies, or modify the underlying data or equations in existing case studies. If you are interested in having us develop a particular case study or becoming a developer and adding case studies yourself, please contact us for more details.

  • suggest an article Introduction Web Services have emerged as a key strategic capability for integrating business processes, data, and organizational knowledge. This article is meant to be a practical discussion guide to building a .NET application in a service-oriented architecture. We will consider real-world goals, real-world obstacles, and experience-based solutions. I quickly concede the approaches discussed here are not exhaustive or infallible. This paper is focused on application development, not application integration. We will specifically consider architectural issues and component design issues. The Potential of Web Services So why all the hype? Web Services obviously have great potential. It's a way to integrate at many different levels. Consider this example. A single consumer application (perhaps interacting with your company over the Internet) wants to engage the company in some business process. To facilitate that business process, the company internally invokes processing that spans two discreet systems (A and B). However, through a service-oriented architecture, the entire end-to-end business process is exposed to the consumer application as a single service.

For the designers of the building, Rauno Lehtinen, Pekka Mäki and Toni Peltola, it was their first built work and only one of them had managed to complete his architecture degree by the time the building was finished. The commission had been given to them through a competition, the traditional way for young architects to get started in Finland. Such competitions have given architecture greater vigour and often elicited an international response, as well.

It achieves this by defining ways for specifying the externally visible characterestics of a distributed object in a way that is implementation-independant. This model is based on clients requesting the services from distributed objects or servers through a well-defined interface, by issuing requests to the objects in the form of events. An event carries information about an operation that needs to be performed including the object name (called an object reference ) of the service provider and the actual parameters if any.

    170. Golden Section In Architectural History By Marcus Frings For The Nexus Network J
Marcus Frings traces the Golden section in architectural theory from Vitruvius to Pacioli to Zeising to Le Corbusier.
    http://www.nexusjournal.com/Frings.html
Abstract In the never-ending - but always young - discussion about the Golden Section in architecture never lacks the hint at Luca Pacioli and the architectural theory. But what always lacks is a thorough study of this topic, the Golden Section in architectural theory. The paper aims to present this analysis. Marcus Frings traces Golden Section from the mathematical and rather theoretical character of Pacioli's concept, examines Alberti, Serlio, Palladio and other architectural treatises, to arrive to Adolf Zeising in the nineteenth century and to theorist Matila Ghyka and the practitioners Ernst Neufert and Le Corbusier in the twentieth. In the latter's writings and designs the Golden Section seems to play the role of a scholarly element which shows the master's theoretical erudition, leading to contemporary architects such as Ricardo Bofill.

Architecture Canada by Tuns Press Canada's architects and designers, according to Adrienne Clarkson, Governor General of Canada, "engage in the continual dialogue between nature and intense urban modernity and offer solutions that range from the whimsical to the visionary. Most remarkably, we see in their work the emergence of a national style that strives, through excellence and innovation, towards the vigorous cultivation of beauty." Here are two of the 12 recipients of the Governor General’s 2002 Medals in Architecture, recognizing excellence in the art of architecture. — Editor The City of Richmond, British Columbia, is a rapidly developing suburban municipality, immediately south of Vancouver. The new city hall by Hotson Bakker Architects and Kuwabara Payne McKenna Blumberg Architects is a significant civic place for this multicultural community. The 120,000 square foot (11,000-square-meter) building also serves as an ambitious model for a healthy workplace and sustainable environmental design. The massing of the principal architectural elements — administrative tower, council chamber, and meeting house — creates a clear visual presence. A pedestrian court to the north addresses the public parking area, and a glass-covered pergola connects this court to community and recreational facilities west of city hall.

Introduction to Dutch gardens and garden architecture
The following text was based on the first chapter of the " Gids voor de Nederlandse Tuin- en Landschapsarchitectuur ", and was originally published in The new Royal Horticultural Society dictionary of gardening. - London : Macmillan, 1992. - Vol.3, p. 315-318. Search specific literature in the bibliographic database Tuinpad More background information on the last decades of Dutch garden history research
Gardening in the Netherlands, as in most of Europe, had its earliest expression in abbey and monastery gardens of the Middle Ages where vegetables, fruit and herbs were cultivated. The layout of a medieval garden usually consisted of a square or slightly elongated rectangle. Cloister gardens usually consisted of a more or less square space divided by a cross-shaped path. A feature - perhaps water or a tree - often marked the centre of the cross. It is likely that the courtyard was planted with grass rather than herbs. The vegetable gardens and orchards within the monastery walls were also of a mainly square or rectangular shape, usually subdivided into a number of smaller beds in which the vegetabies, culinary and medicinal herbs, ornamental flowers for the altar, and fruit trees were grown.
... a square lawn surrounded by aromatic herbs and a variety of flowers, with trees and vines planted against the southern and western walls. Water from a well was channelled towards the centre where seating was placed in the form of a so-called turf bench, a bench constructed of masonry on top of which turf and wild flowers were laid to form a soft cushion ...
