No. 256 . 14 September 2005 House of Plastic
by Botond Bognar The designs of Japanese architect Kengo Kuma critically engage the materiality of architecture in order to challenge its usual meanings, and in so doing, to thwart the emergence of architecture as an object. As he has shown in many of his projects, Kuma is determined to "dissolve" the materials that he uses, or to choose materials that are less substantial, stating, "If materials are thoroughly particlized, they are transient, like rainbows." The application of new materials and the uncommon use of old materials are not limited to Japan, but both have been so extensive here that much of the recent success achieved by Japanese architects can be attributed in large part to those devices. Among the growing number of new materials architects have experimented with are: Teflon fiber fabric, polycarbonate, liquid crystal glass, cardboard, paper, corrugated metal, and perforated aluminum, in order to configure lighter structures and more fluid and ambiguous spatial matrices. Shigeru Ban has long been advocating the use of large cardboard tubes, which he used for his Paper Church in Kobe (1995) and the Japanese Pavilion at the Expo 2000 in Hannover, Germany, among other examples of his "paper architecture." Shuhei Endo, on the other hand, has started to use ordinary corrugated metal sheets in unusual, fluidly curving, and often spiral shapes.

Edit this box Architectural history studies the evolution and history of architecture across the world through a consideration of various influences- artistic socio-cultural political economic and technological . In general, the question is one of relating meaning (intangible functions, purposes, symbols) with the built environment (material tables, windows, roofs, paths) through the necessities of life (food, work, communion etc.) within the historical context. Architectural history, like any other form of historical knowledge, is subject to the limitations and potentialities of history as a discipline . Consequently there have been a wide range of perspectives in the study of architecture, most of them Western. In the 19th century , architecture of the past was understood from a formal perspective, emphasizing the morphological characteristics of form, technique and materials. This period also saw the emergence of the individual architect, the amalgamation of whose conscious intentions would become the subject of artistic movements. In these respects, architectural history is a subdiscipline of

Introduction
I'll never forget when Intel first announced that the name for the successor to the 486 would be "Pentium." I and most of my fellow computer nerds thought the name was silly and not suitably geeky. Everyone knew that computer components were supposed to have names with numbers in them; after all, Star Wars droids, Star Trek ships, software versions, Compuserve e-mail addresses, and every other kind of computer-related thing you could think of had a moniker consisting of some mix of numbers and letters. So what's with a name that vaguely suggests the concept of "fiveness," but would be more appropriate for an element or a compound? To this day, I still have no idea who or what was responsible for the name "Pentium," but I suppose it no longer matters. A question that's still worth asking, though, is why the Pentium name has stuck around as the brand name for Intel's main processor product line through no less than four major architectural changes. In a nutshell, the answer is that the Pentium brand name, having somehow made the transition from the original Pentium architecture to the radically different Pentium Pro (or P6) architecture, became synonymous with the most successful desktop microprocessor architecture of all time — in fact, in its heyday "Pentium" became virtually synonymous with "PC."

An exploration of the viability of underground buildings in contemporary America, with some discussion of international examples.
http://www.subsurfacebuildings.com
Skyscrapers are the headliners, and underground buildings are the virtually unnoticed understudies of architecture. Every day, tens of thousands of Americans use more than 450 public and commercial structures and 5,000 private homes that nestle within the earth. Major new subterranean structures are under construction or are on the drawing boards. SubsurfaceBuildings.com explores underground buildings, examines their impact on architecture and the environment, and addresses such questions as: Why would anyone want to bury a building? Are underground buildings safe How do architects feel about designing buildings that are hidden within the earth? What is the environmental impact of subterranean architecture? Dozens of SubsurfaceBuildings.com articles use photos, drawings, and descriptions to answer questions like these while showing that underground buildings are surprisingly common and appealing.
