History Program - Sample M.S.A.S. Curriculum

The M.S.A.S. program provides students with an introduction to advanced studies in Architectural History. The M.S.A.S. degree is a prerequisite for the Ph.D. program, or it may be pursued independently. It is ordinarily completed in two years and requires 30 hours of coursework, reading knowledge of a foreign language, and a thesis. Program Director: Professor Richard Cleary Design Program - Sample Post-Professional M.Arch.
Curriculum

Program Director: Professor Larry Doll Theory Program - Sample M.S.A.S. Curriculum
The Theory Program is a 4-semester M.S.A.S. degree culminating in a thesis. Its main purpose is to provide the opportunity for students to sample the wide variety of theory-based courses offered by the School. There are no Emphasis or Specialization plans in this area since the M.Arch.1 curriculum already contains a strong theoretical base. Although students will find a complete range of theoretical interests within the school, there is a central belief that architectural theory should produce better buildings. Faculty perspectives on the production and responsibilities of architecture vary widely. However, theory courses tend to investigate a building's critical position vis-a-vis architecture itself prior to its critical role in society or its position as a cultural engine.

The concentration prepares students for the continued study of architecture and the history of architecture in graduate school as well as careers in related areas such as urban studies. The doctoral program prepares graduate students for specialized research in one of the fields regularly taught on the graduate level by the department. The faculty represents a broad spectrum of the discipline's methodologies and specialties. The latter fall within the history of art and architecture of Europe, the United States, Latin America, and East Asia. Before applying for Ph.D. candidacy, students must complete course work in at least three periods or areas of the history of art from among the following: ancient, medieval, early modern, modern, East Asian, or other areas of non-Western art. advancing the use of computers, computer technologies, and digital information
in the service of architectural history, archaeology, and related disciplines.

Citation information.
Search the CSA site. Welcome to the CSA Web site. CSA's aim is to encourage appropriate uses of computers and information technology by those involved in research in archaeology and architectural history - and those who will need the fruits of that research. The key word is appropriate. Particularly in these early stages of the digital era it is not easy to know how best to use the new computing power that has become available to us. Nor is it obvious which computers or computer technologies will turn out to be the best and most appropriate for a given use. Perhaps most important, it is all but impossible to predict which specific approaches to using computers to create digital information will thrive and which will turn out to have been dead ends. It is CSA's mission to help guide users and potential users of information technologies so that, at the least, they can make well-considered choices of computers and software in these poorly charted waters. (If you encounter any problems with our site, please let us know at director@csanet.org.)

A History of American Architecture
Buildings in Their Cultural and Technological Context
Gelernter, Mark A richly illustrated history of American architecture that explains why particular architectural ideas occurred when and where they did. Why did the Victorians drape their buildings in elaborately ornate decoration? Why was the Arts and Crafts movement so popular with the American middle class at the end of the 19th century? Why did Modernism replace traditional architectural styles after World War II? Mark Gelernter provides fresh answers to questions like these, convincingly showing how buildings express powerful cultural forces.
Embodying deeply felt attitudes about fundamental issues, buildings express our relationship with nature, our social relations with others, the importance of the individual, the value of science and technology, and our political role in the world. He explains how designers sometimes expressed these ideas with available building technologies, while at other times they invented new technologies in order to realize new ideas. Each of the ten chronological chapters, accompanied by almost 300 photographs, drawings, and maps, begins with a broad survey of the dominant cultural forces and technologies, and then discusses how designers of the day responded with particular architectural forms.
"Here is a comprehensive work for undergraduates containing more history and ideas than most. Gelernter offers crisp line drawings among the 289 illustrations . . . Ideology and history surrounding American buildings is included throughout, as are useful reviews of history from the ancient Greeks up through American settlement . . . effective coverage of most American architecture and the ideas that shaped it." Bachelor of Arts (Architectural History major)
Architectural history is taught within the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning, but also in the Faculty of Arts. It deals with aspects of the history, interpretation, representation, cultural context, design, planning, construction, and conservation of buildings, viewed in a perspective of social history and cultural milieu. Specific subject areas include the wide range of European architecture, architecture of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Greek and Roman architecture, Asian architecture, and Australian architecture.
A major in this area can lead to postgraduate studies as indicated below. These postgraduate studies are most often directed towards professional specialisation in the building conservation field. Although the specific major detailed below has only recently been introduced, earlier graduates of the Faculties in this field constitute a large proportion of the professionals now working for private consultants and government in Victoria in the areas of survey and identification, design and conservation controls, historical research, and the physical conservation of buildings.

The Art and Architectural History Major
The major in Art and Architectural History provides students with an understanding of the visual arts in relation to society, culture and history. The curriculum reflects a multidisciplinary approach to visual culture, drawing from the departments of Architecture, Art and Historic Preservation. Insights from the historian, the preservationist and the practitioner culminate in a full appreciation of the rich complexity of our material world. The synergy between these disciplines also promotes a realization of the interconnectedness of the arts and the close connection of materials and process with meaning. The understanding of the "why" of the arts, a crucial foundation for the creative process and the preservation of artifacts, is pursued through these several distinct disciplinary lenses. The unique and particular strength of the program is this interdisciplinary focus. The degree program makes use of the rich museum and gallery environment of the region for course work as well as for student internships. Art and Architectural History courses offered through the Roger Williams University Florence, Italy study abroad program are an exciting and valuable option in completing the major. Students majoring in Art and Architectural History are also encouraged to take those courses relevant to the history of cultures which are offered in the Feinstein College of Arts and Sciences.

The firm's work encompasses architectural design at all scales-from urban planning to furniture design. Leeser Architecture's designs emerge from cultural, social, and technological patterns present in the site or situation they are engaging. Their projects frequently use technology to reframe our understanding of architectural conventions and production. By shaping and then harnessing our awareness of these forces they create complex and richly varied spatial experiences. Leeser Architecture maintains an "open office" which engages in collaborations across conventional disciplines. Working closely with other architects, artists, graphic and landscape designers, and engineers has allowed the office to remain streamlined and focused while also taking on large-scale projects.
