MIPS Architecture History
The MIPS architecture grew out of research started at Stanford University. Along with the Berkeley RISC projects, the Stanford MIPS project was one of the first publicly known implementations of a Reduced Instruction Set Computer (RISC) architecture. Among all the current RISC architectures, MIPS remains as one of the simplest. This simplicity makes the MIPS architecture a favorite choice among universities and colleges for their introduction to computer architecture classes. This simplicity also makes the MIPS architecture very attractive to the embedded microprocessor market as it enables very cost-effective implementations.
Former employees from Intel, IBM, Motorola and Stanford started a company called MIPS Computer Systems in 1984 to design industrial strength microprocessors based on the Stanford research. The resulting architecture and implementations are somewhat different from the original Stanford work. The R2000 was introduced in 1986 and was one of the earliest commercially available RISC microprocessors.

Although many readers of this archive might find an article on mathematics and architecture a little surprising, in fact architecture was in ancient times considered a mathematical topic and the disciplines have, up to the present time, retained close connections. Perhaps once one realises that mathematics is essentially the study of patterns, the connection with architecture becomes clearer. Salingaros writes in [27]:- Historically, architecture was part of mathematics, and in many periods of the past, the two disciplines were indistinguishable. In the ancient world, mathematicians were architects, whose constructions - the pyramids, ziggurats, temples, stadia, and irrigation projects - we marvel at today. In Classical Greece and ancient Rome, architects were required to also be mathematicians. When the Byzantine emperor Justinian wanted an architect to build the Hagia Sophia as a building that surpassed everything ever built before, he turned to two professors of mathematics geometers , Isidoros and Anthemius , to do the job. This tradition continued into the Islamic civilization. Islamic architects created a wealth of two-dimensional tiling patterns centuries before western mathematicians gave a complete classification.

For each example there are a handful of links directly to images, which open in a second window which it's best to keep at the left edge of your screen. You can also link from the building name directly to a second page focussed on just that building, with more images and links to pertinent external websites. Some images feature a second link. In these cases, the first will go to a screen-sized image, the second to a much larger image. The number of the second link refers to the dimensions of the raw image (width x height) in pixels. Resolution and JPEG quality will vary, but are generally higher. This project is still abuildin', and we'd be grateful for any constructive comments or contributions.
