Timeline
The period termed "art deco" manifested itself roughly between the two world wars, or 1920 to 1939. Many actually stretch this period back to 1900 and even as far as the late 1950's, but work of this time is generally considered to be more of an influence to the Art Deco style, or having been influenced by the style. As with many other art movements, even work of today is still being influenced by the past.
This period of design and style did not just affect architecture, but all of the fine and applied arts as well. Furniture, sculpture, clothing, jewelry and graphic design were all influenced by the Art Deco style.
Common themes
So what distinguishes this style from all of the rest? Basically it was a "modernization" of many artistic styles and themes from the past. You can easily detect in many examples of Art Deco the influence of Far and Middle Eastern design, Greek and Roman themes, and even Egyptian and Mayan influence. Modern elements included echoing machine and automobile patterns and shapes such as stylized gears and wheels, or natural elements such as sunbursts and flowers.

Welcome to a gallery of fascinating machine designs! I want to collect here information on historical firsts and on important machines that are relatively unknown and/or are underappreciated. I am indebted to Dr. Fred Brooks, whose love of computer architecture inspired me in class at UNC, Chapel Hill. It was a privilege to also work as a graduate student assistant for him on early drafts of his architecture text, Computer Architecture: Concepts and Evolution . See his text for a complete history of computer designs. Please email me if you have comments, additional references on items in the collection, or suggestions for additional items.

Landscape Architecture History and Theory CD
Please see the Contents of the Garden History Reference Encyclopedia CD and the on its use in teaching and learning the history of garden design . As explained below, it is also a Landscape Architecture History CD
Landscape architecture developed out of garden design. This is widely agreed (see for example Kenneth Helphand's illustrated The History of Landscape Architecture ). The Garden History Reference Encyclopedia CD deals extensively with this aspect of landscape architecture and examines its relationship to garden history and design theory. If purchased through Kagi (by teachers or student groups) we offer the CDs in packs of ten at approximately half the normal price. The other key issue is the emeregence of Landscape Architecture as a separate profession, the formation of the American Society of Landscape Architects and its influence on the worldwide profession and the formation of the International Federation of Landscape Architects and the IFLA Central Region . One must know how the landscape profession developed to be able to answer the question ' What is landscape architecture?

A castle in Kyoto, Japan. Photo: Devendra Narayan Distinctly Japanese architecture is considered to have begun around 57 BC. The majority of structures before this time period were pit dwellings. But as time progressed, so did Japan’s architecture. Early forms of Japanese architecture shared a close relationship with Korean architecture. Korean influence is evident in various buildings, which were originally created between 57 and 665 BC. Some of the earliest known examples, built from stone, include Iksan and Miruksa. Timber buildings were also present during the time period. Although they have long since been destroyed, they were depicted in murals found in underground caves including Samschlich-ong, Yodongsonach’ong, and Yaksuri. Because the Japanese islands are of volcanic origin, structures of wooden timber have traditionally been the basis for architecture; there is little stone for building or carving in Japan. The architecture of wood was fully developed during the fifth century. Styles during this time period became more intricate. Architects added decorative gables, saddle roofs, and other details to their designs.

The group is most concerned with the creative process itself, both in understanding the meaning of the architect's and artist's actions and, more importantly, in being able to contribute directly to analytical and design processes, including work in architectural design studios. The history of architecture offerings deal with the social and physical context of the built environment on many scales. While not limited to any particular period of time, subjects generally focus on contemporary understanding relevant to the basic premises held by architects. Theory and criticism of architecture serves as the methodological bases for evaluation of the premises, the process, the final product, and the implications (social, formal, and other) of proposed action and nonaction. These offerings consider the development of and changes in significant attitudes about architectural works.
