The Urals towns architecture may seem simple and unpretentious, but this is only a first glance impression. Take a closer look at the surroundings and you will clearly see the beautiful images of old towns and villages.
Architectural monuments and sites of Perm region bring back the memories of many century history of the Great Perm, Perm Gubernia, Perm Region.
The oldest buildings date back to the 17th century. These are the stone buildings of Solikamsk- the Troitsky (Trinity) Cathedral, the Preobrazhenskaya (Transfomation) Church, the Bogoyavlenskaya Church, the Voievoda's House, stone churches of the Pyanteg and Verkhny-Chusovskye Gorodki villages. The Bogoroditskaya Church (Our Lady Church) of the Tokhtaryovo village, the Suksun District, is a real masterpiece of wooden architecture and can now be seen in the Open-ari Ethnography Museum of Khokhlovka.
The 18th century opened up a new page of the Urals history with the beginning of copper and iron works in the area. Some of them (the Suksunsky, Bisersky, Teplogorsky, Lysvensky, Arkhangelo-Pashysky works) have survived as a monument of the industrial architecture of the time. These sites include the dams, office buildings, forgeries, production premises.
Most notable for their beauty are the architectural sites of Usolye and Ilinskoye which were commissioned by the Ural manufacturers ( e.g. the Stroganovs mansion and Spasso-Preobrazhensky Church in Usolye, etc.). The 18th century architecture features many churches : the superb wooden Preobrazhenskaya (Transformation) Church in the village of Yanidor, Cherdyn district; the Pertopavlovsky (Peter and Paul) Cathedral, the first stone building of Perm City; the Voskresensky (Ascension) Cathedral and the Uspenskaya ( Assumption) Church in Cherdyn; the Uspensky (Assumption) Church in Osa; John the Precursor Church in Solikamsk; the Nikolskaya Church in Nyrob, etc.

G. Mathias Kondolf is a fluvial geomorphologist whose research concerns environmental river management, influences of land-use on rivers, notably effects of mining and dams on river systems, interactions of riparian vegetation and channel form, geomorphic influences on habitat for salmon and trout, alternative flood management strategies, and assessment of ecological restoration. Dr. Kondolf has published over one hundred technical journal articles, book chapters, and reports on these and related topics. My research and teaching focuses on rivers, their transformations by humans, their resilience and their active restoration. I work on salmon-bearing rivers and Mediterranean-climate Rivers, and effects of human alterations like dams and gravel mining. In my classes, I emphasize understanding of physical and ecological process and river history as a basis for restoration strategy, the need to learn from each restoration project, and the need for scientific rigor when approaching restoration. Free eBooks With Every Order! eBook Summary: The word "nature" comes from natura , Latin for birth - as do the words nation, native and innate. But nature and nation share more than a common root, they share a common history where one term has been used to define the other. In the United States, the relationship between nation and nature has been central to its colonial and post-colonial history, from the idea of the noble savage to the myth of the frontier. Narrated, painted and filmed, American landscapes have been central to the construction of a national identity. This book offers an in-depth look at how changing ideas of what nature is and what it means for the country have been represented in buildings and landscapes over the past century. It begins with the close of the frontier and the rise of the conservation movement in the 1890s, and it ends with the opening of the "final" frontier of outer space and the rise of the ecology movement in the 1960s. In this seventy five year period, certain American myths about nature have endured while others have been invented, reworked or abandoned. The buildings and landscapes that have resulted from this dynamic process represent the dreams and ambitions of the country for its relationship to nature: the architecture of the National Parks, the streamlined dams of the Tennessee Valley Authority, the modernist dream houses of post war California, and the geodesic domes of the countercultural sixties.

Hydropower and Dams
Planning Hydropower Resources - Developing a hydropower (HP) project involves SWECO in a number of phases; in the master planning of overall water resources, project identification, owner system expansion plans, feasibility studies, addressing the technical, environmental and economic aspects and compliance with IPP (Independent Power Producer) requirements.
Environmental Impact assessments, etc . - EIAs are an important part of all of SWECOs projects, including the minimization of resettlement, the protection of flora and fauna, etc. as well as accounting for Life Cycle Analysis aspects. Environmental conditions also play a decisive role in the layout of structures. Arctic climates require underground structures and the effects of permafrost must be carefully analyzed. While in the tropics, on the other hand, periods of drought require specially designed large-scale storage dams.
Designing Power Plants and Dams - SWECO has designed more than 120 large and medium-sized HP plants and dams, operating with a total capacity of circa 16,000 MW in nearly 60 countries worldwide. SWECO provides a full range of services including surveys, feasibility studies, complete designs, tender documents, contract management and supervision, commissioning, training and the transfer of technology and dam safety assessment.

Opposition to Meinung Dam from Overseas
April 16, 1999 A s experts and scholars of water resource and environmental science and planning, we are writing to express our deep concern about the proposed Meinung Dam. L arge-scale dam projects are now recognized widely as an environmentally and economically costly way of water resource management, flood control and power generation. Beyond the immediate ecological impacts, large dams often raise questions of economic rationality, technical design and development policy. We have learned from the existing research that the proposed Meinung Dam contains numerous flaws in terms of technical design, projection of economic benefit, planning process, and concerns for sustainability and environmental justice. T he main concerns include (1) geological unsuitability, (2) safety threats to nearby residents, (3) violation of environmental justice and threat to cultural heritage, (4) species extinction and biodiversity loss, (5) threats to regional water quality and groundwater recharge, (6) short life span of dam and disproportional cost, (7) over-estimate of water demand, (8) lack of assessment for alternatives to dam, (9) increased heavy industrial development and CO2 emission, (10) inadequate environmental impact assessment, and (11) local and regional opposition. T here are alternatives to the construction of dam in addressing the problems of water demand and water resource management. The alternatives currently proposed by the local governments in southern Taiwan, including groundwater recharge, water conservation measures and installation of sewage treatment plants, are viable alternatives to the costly construction of the dam to improve quantity and quality of water supply. We urge you to consider these alternatives. Taiwan with its economic resources and technical capacity can do better to promote a more sustainable way of water resource management and economic development. The long-term environmental, social and economic cost of Meinung Dam outweighs its short-term economic benefit. The building of Meinung Dam is a wrong direction for Taiwan.

No More Coding for EAI? DAM Right, Says Magic
by Alex Woodie

Magic Software
recently launched a new release of its iBOLT enterprise application integration (EAI) suite that, the company claims, virtually eliminates the need for people to write code to connect applications. The secret to the elimination of programming in iBOLT 2.0 is something called Directly Accessible Methods (DAM), which, Magic says, allows integration architects to plug components together from the comfort of a graphical interface. The company also announced its most recent financial results and a new partnership with SAP Getting enterprise applications on different platforms to talk to each other has never been easy. Lots of money has been spent on proprietary message brokering middleware systems and $100-an-hour consultants to invasively code integration into source and target platforms. With the advent of XML and Web services standards, traditional EAI is making way for a new class of plug-and-play integration techniques and integration products. Magic Software's iBOLT can be considered as a bridge between old world EAI and the new world of integration through Web services. Since it launched, in early 2003, the software has worked by basically implementing a new integration architecture that links existing systems. The iBOLT Studio suite's graphical design tools are intended to allow non-technical "integration architects" to map existing business processes running on iSeries, Unix, Linux, and Windows systems, and then define how those business processes will flow together under the new architecture. Then, at runtime, the software creates the executables (iBOLT Server) needed to link these processes into a new composite application, and watches (iBOLT Monitor) how well they're working on the different platforms.

Students will understand the following: The enormous Three Gorges Dam is now being constructed in China on the upper Yangtze River. The dam will benefit many people, but it may also cause serious problems. Dams are built according to complex principles of engineering. Materials For their research students will need materials on dams and dam engineering, as well as a computer with Internet access. Each team will require the following materials for dam construction: Empty fish tank Tape Scissors Materials that team members choose for building dam Procedures Ask your students if they have ever seen a dam. Ask them to mention some of the purposes that dams serve. Encourage students to talk about dams they have seen, from beaver dams to giant dams built for the purpose of controlling flooding or generating hydroelectric power.

Saturday, June 19, 2004 Wake up Sydney - life is only going to get thirstier
http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2004/06/18/1087245110315.html
Rivers are shrinking, the dams are drying up and it never seems to rain any more. But there are signs, finally, that hard decisions are being taken, writes James Woodford.
It only takes a boat trip from one end of Lake Burragorang to the other to realise there is a water scandal in Sydney that has got nothing to do with whether a new dam should be built.
The 50-kilometre-long reservoir behind the Warragamba Dam wall is a vast body of pure fresh water - one of the biggest of its kind in the world. It holds more than 2 million megalitres when full - more than four times the volume of Sydney Harbour.
Even after one of the worst droughts in memory and several summers of huge evaporation it still holds twice the harbour's volume. And yet every week its level falls about half a per cent, meaning it could be entirely drained in just over two years. Two more summers without a big fall from a monsoonal trough will spell disaster for Sydney and the nation's economy.

Natural Attractions - NEPEAN DAM If you have followed the list of the dams on our Natural Attractions pages, you have arrived at the fourth and last of the great engineering masterpieces of the Upper Nepean river system - the Nepean Dam. Completed in 1935, it is smaller than the other great dams, but an integral link in the water catchment area which supplies the city of Sydney and the Illawarra area. Both the dam itself and the tourist's picnic and lookout areas are on a more modest scale than the other dams, but the Nepean has a special quality of its own which makes it as an interesting place to visit, or to take the family. Easily accessible. The Nepean is the most easily accessible of the dams, being just a kilometre or so off the freeway, and a few kilometres from Bargo. The entrance road and park-like picnic areas have the same well-kept and neat appearance as the other tourist attractions. Except here it is obvious time and fashions have changed since the extravagant and novel days of the earlier dams. A peaceful place to rest and play.

01 Booth Board Mill/Usine de Planches Booth (1912, 1918, 1928) This building is an amazing monument of industrial architecture. Its made of poured concrete and resembles a fantastic medieval fortress more than a factory. The walls crawl around the rocky edge of the island and seem to bend and poke out where ever a tank or process demanded it. The steam plant is in two parts. The oldest part is south behind the security office. In front of this older part is the concrete base remaining from the original 175 foot high smokestack. It was built in 1905-06 to generate steam for use in the fine paper and newsprint operation J.R. Booth decided to set up at the age of 77. It used to house 13 Babcox and Wilcox -type straight-tube boilers. The current E.B. Eddy steam plant is just in front of it .
The most interesting part of this brick building is the de-watered channel beside it on the south. This channel, now obstructed by trees and bushes, used to be filled with water from the Buchanan channel across the road which ran the water wheels which worked the mill. Behind the pulp mill from top of the bulkhead at the end of the channel one can see the various deflectors and chutes with which the water was controlled. A nice view of O.H. Power House #4 is also available from behind it. 04 Booth Office/Bureau Booth (1900)
05 Booth Stables/Ecuries Booth (1900)
06 Booth Stores and Blacksmith Shop/Magasins et forge Booth (1900)
These three buildings were built to replace others destroyed in the great fire of 1900. The careful observer can see the old stone foundations from the pre-fire buildings that were reused as the foundation for the current red brick walls.

RCHITECTURE is perhaps among the oldest craft that mankind has known after inventing hunting tools or a wheel. We have since ages witnessed a number of civilisation and each of them had a distinct feature that distinguished them from the others. Today, one can easily differentiate Roman civilisation from the Egyptian, Chinese from the Indus valley or even within our country, say Gupta dynasty from the Mughal. The most prominent feature, which helps historians or a laymen in understanding the civilisation are its buildings, monuments and worship places, constructed during those periods. While we may not be able to see the live photographs of our ancestors who lived thousands of years ago, we can very well understand their lifestyle, culture, society or economic status, from the architecture of their times. Architecture of any nation is its priceless heritage that continues to live for thousands of years and thus reminds people of their glorified or horrified past. We have witnessed wonders like Taj Mahal, Egyptian Pyramids, Statue of Liberty, Great Wall of China, built hundreds of years ago or recent ones like Eiffel Tower, Binatone Bridge or Petronis Towers, all created by great architects. Art and science of architecture is age-old and those who are working in this field have either inherited the skills from their ancestors or have undergone learning and training courses at various architecture schools.
