  • Tall buildings, wide horizons
The history of Polish architecture before 1939 was not very different from the general trends observable in European architecture of the time. The split from that tradition came only at the end of the Second World War when the country was drawn into the Soviet sphere of influence as it tried to rebuild itself from the devastation of war. The subsequent revolution in Polish architecture could take place only after the democratic transformations following 1989.
  • Socialist realism and the great slab
  • The turning-point
The year 1989, which brought with it radical political and economic changes to Poland, opened up an enormous opportunity for development in Polish architecture. At least three stages can be discerned in the history of Polish architecture of the last ten years.
During the first period, inferior projects from several years earlier, and still using primitive technology, were completed. At the same time, the first "imported" designs were built, the work of second- or third-ranked Western architects deliberately described as the "paratroopers". In those days glass curtain walling was king, and it concealed the paucity of formal resolutions. During this period hardly any public buildings were built and in commercial architecture the drive for quick profits and the budgetary savings associated with that were more important that quality.

Conclusions
As in more familiar exercises in close reading, ocan start anywhere in a culture’s repertoire of forms and end up anywhere else. The study of architecture in the United Arab Emirates revealed the impact of changing economic wealth on cultural and social aspects which, in turn, influenced the shape of the built-environment. Advanced construction technology, modern building materials, imported expertise and economic wealth all contributed to the rapid change in architecture. Above all, the desire to follow the western path of progress and development was the main factor for change. For years, traditional architecture was regarded as backward and undesirable. Recently, a consciousness of the importance of heritage and traditions was ignited by His Highness Sheik Zayed Bin Sultan instructions to recognize the historical past of the United Arab Emirates.
New Buildings Imitating Traditional Style A new trend to utilize the architectural heritage of the past is encouraged in all aspects of culture. International and local consultants in the field of architecture are struggling to design modern buildings using vernacular architecture features and elements borrowed from historical buildings. The use of courtyards, small openings and

The concepts- of house and home transcend geographical areas, cultural norms, linguistic connotations, religious doctrines and temporal boundaries: They are fundamental human concepts which are grounded in sets of relationships that order and define the status of individuals in relation to society at large. Historical research of interpretations of home plus recent demographic trends and technological innovations indicate that the multidimensional nature of home ought to be examined in precise contexts using integrative and historical research methads. This subject is complex and it warrants long-term commitment.

IN HOUSTON'S MUSEUM DISTRICT Taniguchi Best Known in United States as Architect for MoMA Expansion Asia House Will Be His First Freestanding New Building Design Outside His Native Japan
"Mr. Taniguchi's buildings seamlessly blend the essence of modern Asian design with a perfect grasp of the tradition of modern architecture in America,” said Edward R. Allen III, Chairman of the Asia House Board of Directors. “Asia House will bring a work of aesthetic genius to Houston and, at the same time, serve to further strengthen the city’s already strong ties with Asia, a critical element for the vitality of the local, regional, and national economy.” Charles Foster, Chairman of Asia Society Texas, concurred, “Houston is at the leading edge of a national trend of increasing cultural and economic relationships with Asia and of growth in the Asian American community. With Asia poised to be the emerging global economic powerhouse of the new century, it is vital for Americans to understand Asia to maintain our competitive edge in the global arena and to work collaboratively and productively in a changing world. Asia House will be the forum where all these converging ideas, opportunities, communities, and cultures can come together for the future."

Speech by His Highness the Aga Khan
Address by His Highness the Aga Khan
at the Ninth Award Cycle of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture
New Delhi, 27 November 2004
Prime Minister,
Excellencies,
Distinguished Guests,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
It is a great pleasure to be here in Delhi this evening to recognise the winners of the ninth cycle of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture. We are particularly honoured by the presence of the Prime Minister whose leadership and ideas have contributed so much to improving the quality of life and economic well-being of the citizens of India.
I would also like to thank the departments and agencies of the Indian government who have been so supportive in mounting the Award events in India, and in facilitating the presence of so many people from different parts of the world. Many of our international guests have prominent and responsible positions at home and their presence here honours us.
The recognition we are giving tonight carries the name Award for Architecture. But it represents much more. The Award recognises the efforts of architects and their clients, builders - large and small, governments, planners, international organisations, granting agencies, village organisations and individuals. All of them are collectively responsible for the creation of a humane and socially-supportive built environment that is so important to our quality of life.
It is therefore most appropriate that this event is taking place in India, a country rich in cultural heritage and pluralistic traditions. Here, many cultures have maintained their distinct identities while combining and co-operating to create something even greater, the dynamic and vibrant India of the modern world. This is also a country where the struggle for social justice and improved quality of life has made tremendous strides over many decades through the continuous efforts of governments and civil society.

Abbasids [The] The second major Islamic dynasty (750-1258), were the descendants of al-Abbas, the Prophet's uncle, hence the name. Their effective rule lasted only for a little more than a century. After that they became the figureheads of an elusive Islamic unity that did not exist in reality. Abd al-Malik Fifth Umayyad caliph (685-705), organized the Caliphate, Arabicized the administration and Islamized the coinage after he had subdued several revolts against the rule of his family. Ablution Fountain A feature frequently but not always encountered in mosques. It is usually put in the center of the mosque's courtyard for the worshipers to perform their ritual washing before prayer. Aghlabids [The] A dynasty that ruled Ifriqiya and Sicily between 800 and 909. Their capital was at Qayrawan, and they paid tribute to the Abbasids. Akhi Member of the Sufi network that Islamized Anatolia and formed the religious counterpart to the warrior class. Al-Andalus Southern Spain, but used in Arabic sources to designate all of Islamic Spain.
