Abstract Differences between men and women with respect to traits associated with the potential for undertaking entrepreneurial activities were measured to determine whether gender "gaps" in these traits vary across countries and cultures. In this seventeen-country study, the male-female gap in internal locus of control orientation was found to be negatively correlated with Hofstede's masculinity dimension of culture. The gender gap in risk-taking propensity was positively correlated with the individualism dimension of culture and negatively correlated with the uncertainty avoidance dimension of culture. Gender gaps in entrepreneurial traits were greatest among advanced economies and least among the less developed economies.

November 28, 2001 Addressing the Needs of Society
Faculty taking part in the discussion were asked to identify pressing issues that could be addressed by marshaling the intellectual and creative resources of the school. Prominent among the concerns they raised were the increasing disparity between rich and poor, continued degradation of the environment, and the growing homogenization of the world. The places where we live, work, and conduct business are becoming more and more alike and more and more unlikable. People are put off by their environment and feel powerless to change it, the Envision participants observed. The rise of heritage tourism is a sign that we are desperate to find places of enduring value. Other specific issues that surfaced in the Envision discussion include the following: Sprawl and its effect on our quality of life The need to preserve and steward historic and cultural resources Imbalance in modes of transportation (i.e., over-dependence on automobiles) and its effect on the environment

Why Study Abroad
When to Study Abroad
Study abroad programs are available at all class levels (some as early as 3rd quarter first year all the way through to the last quarter of the senior year). The particular quarter, semester, summer or year that you study abroad depends on your individual progress in the major, what coursework you plan to complete abroad, and your immediate plans after graduation. Consult with your major advisor to determine the best time period for your study abroad experience. The LDA major provides several opportunities in the curriculum study plan that fit with a study abroad experience. The optimum time to schedule a semester of study abroad is the fall of the senior year. The summers after sophomore or junior year are also natural fits. We strongly encourage you to consider a full year as you will have more opportunities to develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of your host country; however, a full year option requires that your host university offer the construction/technology class that you would normally take. It is also possible to complete your senior project abroad, as long as you consult carefully with your advisor. Whether you want to study abroad for a semester, summer or year, plan ahead and let your advisor know of your interest. Where to go
Looking at UC/UC Davis-run programs, you have over 40 locations from which to choose (and over 100 different program options in those countries). Some offer only intensive language and culture programs, others "set" courses which may or may not fit your major. The majority allow you to choose from regular host university course choices (offered in English or the host country language). The best way to choose is to look over the options and consult with the Education Abroad Center advisors and your major advisor.

Home Bloug Archive Mar 23, 2004: Multilingual, Multinational Information Architecture Design Have you worked on a multilingual, multinational web site's information architecture? If so, there's a future for you; designing such architectures is one of the two frontiers of IA design, along with (naturally) enterprise IA. And if you've worked on multilingual, multinational, enterprise architectures, well then, hats off to you. You've not only come up with ways to make those enterprise silos work together as one information environment, but you've made it happen with content owners and user audiences that literally don't speak the same language. I'm working with a Fortune 500 client that's already gotten off to an excellent start on cracking the enterprise nut. But they operate in dozens of countries and do business in enough languages to make the folks at Berlitz drool. I've been charged with kicking off the research on what's been variously called internationalization, globalization, and localization. (Or should it be localisation?) I'm hoping we can gather some collective notes on developing a multilingual, multinational enterprise information architecture right here on Bloug. It'd be wonderful to compile a list of the issues and challenges involved in designing such an architecture; I've started one below. Care to add to it?

The two world wars disrupt thriving avant-garde artistic cultures in the Low Countries. At the turn of the century, Belgian artists are at the forefront of the Art Nouveau Surrealism . In the Netherlands, De Stijl artists develop abstraction in painting , which has implications for design and architecture as well. Some of the artists associated with De Stijl emigrate to the United States as a consequence of World War II. In the postwar period, rebuilding projects spark the development of a unique modernist idiom in architecture and design. During the last decades of the century, government investment in good design makes the Netherlands an international leader in the field. Moreover, the particular concern in the Netherlands with the environmental aspects of

Humphrey program hosts future leaders from 10 nations
Archived article from Jan 26, 2004 By Melissa Payton At a time when America’s image abroad is taking a beating, there is at least one U.S. State Department program that is giving foreign professionals a nuanced—and overwhelmingly positive—view of this country and its citizens.
The Humphrey program at the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy is hosting 10 fellows from the Mideast, Latin America, Asia, Africa and Eastern Europe. Pictured from left to right are Wafa Mohsen Al-Daily (Yemen); Salah el-Shakhs, professor of urban planning and policy development and coordinator of the Humphrey program; Majed Al-Bean (Syria) and Adeze Ojukwu (Nigeria).

Humphrey Fellowship Program is a kind of Peace Corps in reverse, giving overseas professionals advanced training they can use to help improve their countries. Rutgers–New Brunswick is one of 14 campuses nationwide to offer the program this year, hosting 10 fellows from the Mideast, Latin America, Asia, Africa and Eastern Europe. Although the program’s primary goal is to help produce leaders in developing nations, it has a side benefit for the United States: “It helps people abroad understand what America is,” said Salah El-Shakhs, coordinator of the Humphrey fellowship program at Rutgers and professor of urban planning and policy development.

Students experience international practice of architecture
While nearly a dozen School of Architecture graduate students conversed with a Rain Queen in South Africa this past summer, their peers in Spain picked the brains of internationally renowned architects. Elsewhere in Europe, undergraduate students observed, recorded and analyzed some of the great urban buildings of all time. Experiences abroad such as these allow students to better understand the international practice of architecture, said John Hoal, visiting assistant professor and director of the Master's of Architecture Urban Design Program. "We have to sensitize our students to the architecture of developing countries," said Hoal, who led the eight-week South African design studio, which included study in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. "Architects today have to be able to move from one culture to another and practice in cultures that are vastly different." One of the most memorable moments of the new South African studio was talking with the Balodebo tribe's Rain Queen through an intermediary, the graduate students said. "She was one of the tribal leaders, and it was unusual since she was a woman," recalled third-year graduate student JoAnn Brookes. "She determines whether or not it rains; it's an arid country, so she is very powerful."

Exploring Ancient History on the Web
Introduction Using the major search engines to search for ancient history Web sites for the classroom may produce overwhelming results. For example, a search on AltaVista for the phrase "ancient history" will result in a lengthy list of over 37,000 Web pages. A better route may be to begin with a database of educational sites such as Awesome Library at http://www.awesomelibrary.org/ . Although the Awesome Library consists of 14,000 sites, each one is carefully reviewed, briefly annotated, organized under classroom subject headings, and searchable by keyword. The Ancient Civilizations section is neatly arranged by culture subtopics, including the Ancient Chinese, Ancient Greeks, and Ancient Mayans. Users can look for the best sites for teachers, kids, teens, parents, librarians, or the community depending on their individual needs. The sites listed below can aid students and teachers in uncovering images, articles, activities, virtual tours, timelines, and downloadable maps to supplement the study of ancient history.
