Lack of respect for the architectural profession shown by both public and private building patrons and their interference in the implementation of projects are among chronic difficulties that have remained as rampant today as yesterday. Other problems have also persisted, such as expecting consulting engineers to carry out large-scale projects without an initial plan, the inability to evaluate the artistic quality of projects, nitpicking over trivial matters while ignoring fundamental faults when judging the projects, the designers' and builder dislike of constructive criticism, lack of productive cooperation between designers and consultants, absence of healthy competition and the prevalence of deceitful practices in competing with others. Recently, a new issue has been added to these and that is the resistance of building patrons toward the construction of an edifice that is of a bold and outstanding artistic design.

November/December 2001 Volume 52, Number 6 November/December 2001
Volume 52, Number 6 Import, Adapt, Innovate Mosque Design in the United States Written by Omar Khalidi Islam's first mosque, built in Madinah in 622, was a simple rectangular structure constructed of palm logs and adobe bricks. The United States' first purpose-built mosque, completed in Cedar Rapids, Iowa in 1934, was a simple rectangular building of white clapboard on a cinder-block foundation, with a dome over the front door. In the 13 centuries that separate those buildings, mosque design has evolved differently in the different countries and cultures where Muslims live, and in the us too the thematic and visual characteristics of mosque architecture had to deal with a new environment-one that had its own pre-existing historical and visual vocabulary. Second, there are those that represent a reinterpretation of tradition, sometimes combined with elements of American architecture. Examples are the Islamic Cultural Center in New York City (1991) and Daral-Islam in Abiquiu, New Mexico (1981). Third are the designs that are entirely innovative, like those of the Islamic Society of North America's headquarters in Plainfield, Indiana (1979); the Islamic Center of Albuquerque, New Mexico (1981); the Islamic Center of Edmond, Oklahoma (1992) and the Islamic Center of Evansville, Indiana (1992). As in the older mosques, most of the buildings in all these categories are not exclusively places of worship, but function rather as Islamic centers, with such facilities as classrooms, library, conference center, bookshop, kitchen and social hall, as well as recreational facilities, residential apartments, and in some cases even a funeral home.

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage!
The word 'Hispanic' does not define a nationality or a race. It describes a culture. So, who is Hispanic? A formal recognition of Hispanic Heritage was first declared by the U.S. Congress in 1968, to celebrate a combination of several Latin American countries' Independence Day holidays: In 1988, the celebration was extended to a full month. It now includes Columbus Day on October 12th, and Día de la Raza - commemorating the first immigration of Hispanics to the Americas. Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated from September 15th - October 15th. September 15 September 16 September 18 Costa Rica El Salvador Guatemala Nicaragua Mexico Chile With so many countries sharing the same holiday, it can be quite confusing to answer the question, who is Hispanic?

Lesson 1 Canadian Heritage
The history of St. Ann's Academy takes place within the larger framework of Canada's early history. The story of how the Sisters of St. Ann were founded begins with the journey of early settlers from France to Quebec. The later journey of a group of four Sisters to the Pacific Coast coincides with the gold rush in Victoria, when thousands were pouring into the region, and a settlement was established here. Many of the students at St. Ann's were children of the employees of the Hudson's Bay fur trading company, as well as from local Native communities and abroad. These are the origins from which the history of St. Ann's emerges, along with that of British Columbia and Canada.
Project: Family History Research Research your family history, and find out where your ancestors are from. Speak to family members and try to find any written materials you can on your family including letters, diaries or birth certificates. Try researching names by looking in the library or on the internet. Write a report summarizing your family background, and include details about who your ancestors were, where they were from, what their home country was like, what their livelihood was, and why they moved to Canada. What did they do once they moved to Canada? If you wish, include photographs and a diagram of your family tree.

While the developing countries dither, discussions about a
"new financial architecture" have been appropriated by the
neo-liberal establishment. As the US and the IMF seek to
preclude any fundamental reform of the international
financial system, dissenting voices are often brushed aside,
while the UN system is itself riddled with conflicting views
about the current Washington-driven globalization process.

GENEVA: Within a short period of a year or so, a "new financial
architecture" (NFI or nfi) has become what "mother's love and apple pie" was to Americans of a generation ago: something no one can oppose without earning public opprobrium, and hence to be responded to with a "yes, but..." Now there is hardly any international gathering - official and intergovernmental or non-official - where this term is not used. And almost everyone is for a "new financial architecture"

  • Vernacular architecture and landscape architecture, often called "ordinary" or "traditional" built environment, is a subject which crosses many disciplines: architecture, landscape architecture, historic preservation, building science, cultural anthropology, urban geography, archaeology, material culture, history, folklore, and human geography among them. As a result, information about vernacular architecture can be found in a variety of libraries and resources on campus. This is a brief and selective guide to materials available in the Environmental Design Library , and includes basic research tools, historical sources, and strategies for finding materials in the UC Berkeley Libraries. The Anthropology Library East Asian Library Ethnic Studies Library South/Southeast Asia Library ... Center for Chinese Studies Library , and Doe and Moffitt also have relevant materials. Only selected general materials are listed here; in fact, specific sources are generally excluded from this guide. Terms related to a particular building material (e.g. straw, adobe), a stylistic term (e.g. Shaker, Safavid), or cultural descriptor (e.g. nomads, Haida) will lead to additional worthwhile material, even when the main focus is not architecture per se, and should be searched as well. About Mexico
To see a Mexico Map, click here Mexico is an ideal place for those interested in archaeology. In the land known as Mesoamerica, major cultures developed over three thousand years ago. The main archaeological sites in the high tableland include Cuicuilco, Teotihuacan. Tula and the Great Temple. Outstanding sites in the Oaxaca region include Monte Albán, Mitla and Lambityeco. For those wishing to find out more about the Mayan world, visiting Chichén Itza and Uzmal in the Yucatán and Palenque and Bonampak in Chiapas is a must. On the Gulf Coast, El Tajín and the La Venta Museum Park are well worth exploring. In the west of Mexico, visiting the Purépecha ceremonial stone structures is a rewarding experience. Finally, the city of Paquimé in Chihuahua is a fascinating example of the cultures in northern Mexico. Architecture occupies a significant position in the history of mankind. In Mexico, as in other countries, architecture is a reflection of its past. Thus, visitors will obtain a fascinating historical overview of the country through its pre-Hispanic temples and cities, colonial churches and monasteries, palaces and a wide range of civil and hydraulic architecture, in styles ranging from medieval and gothic through renaissance to mudéjar and baroque. Art nouveau, neo-Mexican, neoclassical and art deco were established between the 19th and early 20th centuries, leaving an indelible mark on many cities. Other styles that began in the 20th century eventually evolved into the restrained works of contemporary architecture. Here you will be able to see them first-hand, trace their development in time and discover a new world that is eclectic in each era and as a whole.

    ...about Aldo Rossi
The late Aldo Rossi has achieved distinction as a theorist, an author, an artist, a teacher and as a architect, in his native Italy as well as internationally. Vincent Scully, in an introductory essay to a book on Rossi published by Rizzoli, compares him to LeCorbusier as a painter-architect. Ada Louise Huxtable, architectural critic and Pritzker juror has described Rossi as "a poet who happens to be an architect."
Rossi was born in Milan, Italy where his father was engaged in the manufacture of bicycles, bearing the family name, a business he says was founded by his grandfather. While growing up during the years of World War II, Rossi studied at the School of the Somaschi Fathers in Lake Como, and later at the Collegio Alessandro Votas in Lecco. Shortly after the war ended, he entered the Milan Polytechnic receiving his architecture degree in 1959.
Although early film aspirations were gradually transposed to architecture, he still retains strong interest in drama. In fact, he says, "In all of my architecture, I have always been fascinated by the theatre." For the Venice Biennale in 1979, he designed the Teatro del Mondo, a floating theatre, built under a joint commission from the theatre and architecture commissions of the Biennale. It seated 250 around a central stage. It was towed by sea to the Punta della Dogana where it remained through the Biennale. Rossi described the project in its site, as "a place where architecture ended and the world of the imagination began." More recently, he completed a major building for Genoa, the Carlo Felice Theatre which is the National Opera House.
