Traditional Environments in a New Millenium:
Defining Principles and Professional Practice 20-23 June 2001, Amasya , Turkey

This symposium is the second of a series of international meetings organised by IAPS Network on Culture and Space in the Built Environment, with the objective of bringing together participants from various disciplines such as: architecture, urban design, planning, psychology, sociology, anthropology as well as from different countries and cultures. Amasya, which is known as one of the oldest settlements in Anatolia, is chosen as the symposium venue. The city of Amasya is located in the dramatic Yesilirmak Valley, with remnants of various civilisations for over 5500 years. Its urban and architectural form is the result of many cultural values from antiquity to the present. The Symposium will give the opportunity to directly experience a historic conservation place and to be involved with local residents of a traditional environment. Themes

International Information Architecture
July 14, 2003 Comments (13) Subscribe Connecting people from diverse disciplines, countries and cultures is a strategic imperative, not only for AIfIA but for the information architecture community as a whole. Our competitive advantage derives from our very ability to build bridges and span networks. This argument alone should provide ample incentive for us to nurture an international perspective within the practice, but there are all sorts of idiosyncratic reasons why information architects should reach across borders.
Women, Fire, and Dangerous Things
George Lakoff's book about categorization is required reading for any serious information architect. Consider this excerpt: The title of this book was inspired by the Australian aboriginal language Dyirbal, which has a category, balan , that actually includes women, fire, and dangerous things. It also includes birds that are not dangerous, as well as exceptional animals, such as the platypus, bandicoot, and echidna. The ways we categorize are rooted in language and culture. This creates unique challenges for information architects. For example, a web site targeted for a Japanese audience may require a completely different structure and organization than its German equivalent. Localization isn't limited to translation.

Save a personal copy of this article and quickly find it again with Furl.net. It's free! Save it. This year's entries for the ar+d awards showed a huge range of invention and ideas from all over the world. Here and on the following pages, Peter Davey, AR Editor and Chairman of the Jury, explains the scope of the awards and the jury's judgements. This is the fourth annual cycle of the ar+d awards. They were conceived by the partnership of The Architectural Review and d line, the distinguished Danish architectural design firm, to discover and celebrate the work of architects and designers not necessarily well known and usually at the start of independent careers. This year, we are most grateful to be sponsored by Buro Happold, the international consulting engineers, who have enabled us to extend the awards and their associated activities in several directions.
