103. Architecture In China
architecture in China will class replace class? A series of project reviewshave hampered development and no official date is set for completion.
http://www.gluckman.com/ArchChina.html
Architecture at a juncture
China gave the world the Great Wall, pagoda roofs, screens, joints and other innovations of garden architecture. Yet that was centuries ago. Since then, China has been renowned for its concrete blocks. As the country turns to world-class talent to remake the Middle Kingdom as a modern showpiece, can China really replace crass with class?
By Ron Gluckman /Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu and Hong Kong P AUL ANDREU PONDERS what has become of his dream of giving Beijing a National Theater that would be the envy of the world. "The Big Hole - yes, that would be a very apt name," the French architect says as he scans the partly excavated site alongside Tiananmen Square in the Chinese capital. Andreu's vision - a $300-million structure that is not so much a building as it is a futuristic bubble set in an artificial lake - has been repeatedly stalled by objections of Beijingers who derisively refer to it as the "alien egg." Others have not been so kind calling it a "Giant Turd." A series of project reviews have hampered development and no official date is set for completion. Andreu is undeterred. "This will be my most successful work," he predicts.

Archimedia I- Architecture in Ancient Near East
The object of the Archimedia project is to allow students to understand what ancient buildings looked like and how they were constructed. It does this by displaying numerous views, plans and sections, as well as axonometric and computerized reconstructions of these buildings. The project concentrates on buildings from Ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia. It is organized according to each building, and includes a description of its materials and building techniques, followed by a visual comparison of all the buildings involved.

    • Licensing requirements include a professional degree in architecture, a period of practical training, and passing all divisions of the Architect Registration Examination.
    • Architecture graduates may face competition, especially for jobs in the most prestigious firms; opportunities will be best for those with experience working for a firm while still in school and for those with knowledge of computer-aided design and drafting technology.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top People need places in which to live, work, play, learn, worship, meet, govern, shop, and eat. These places may be private or public; indoors or outdoors; or rooms, buildings, or complexes; and together, they make up neighborhoods, towns, suburbs, and cities. Architects Architects design the overall aesthetic and look of buildings and other structures, but the design of a building involves far more than its appearance. Buildings also must be functional, safe, and economical and must suit the needs of the people who use them. Architects consider all these factors when they design buildings and other structures.

Although my professors were all modernists, for most of my professional career I have marched to a different drum. Seeking a true American architecturebuildings that grow organically from this landI have had the good fortune to meet many Native American genii who showed me, with wit, that there is an idiom of architecture as different from the European as the European is different from the Asian, African or Australian. It is a language of architecture that is conditioned by centuries of experiment and experience with the climate and minute environmental conditions of this continent. This Native idiom of architecture seems to me the only appropriate way to speak of shelter on Turtle Island...

Users who are interested in the eBiquity meetings , can ask the Context Broker for various kind of event information by sending a pre-defined set of commands through SMS. A context broker is currently running at UMBC CoBrA mentioned in the weblogs: Semantic Wave Blog and Raw CoBrA source codes and releases are now available on the new CoBrA project homepage on the SemWebCentral.ORG . Completed CoBrA Demo Toolkit v1.0.0 . The new release of CEV v1.0.1 now supports the loading of ontologies from a persistent DB (MySQL only). Added a Quicktime video of the demo and a UML diagram that explains the demo procedure. Added documentation on how to install the demo system. Migrating to using of the SOUPA ontology . The future COBRA-ONT will focus on defining ontologies for the eBiquity meetings and associated events. The new ontology will extend from the SOUPA ontology. COBRA-ONT v0.5 and examples are now available. Added an Eclipse Plug-in tool called CoBrA Eclipse Viewer for exploring the knowledge base and monitoring the reasoning of a Context Broker.

A Chronicle of Restoration click on small images to view full screen with caption The last reigning Dege King, photographed while in detention in Batang with his family Denba Tsering, one of the great Dege Kings History It is believed that the founder of the monastery was Palden Shangchub Lingpa. He was originally from eastern Dengko (now incorporated into Dege County). He successfully merged a number of small monasteries, Trana Gonpa, Langrog Gonpa, Yanong Gonpa, and Wuchhen Gonpa (present day Palpung) into one big monastery. His successor was called Ngara Rinchhen Tshultrim. Because Palden Shangchub Lingpa belonged to the Sakya Sect he converted Palpung into Sakya. When the monastery was converted back to Kagyu is not known. The most famous Dege King, Chögyal Denba Tsering, vigorously supported Palpung and made the Eight Tai Situpa Rinpoche, Chögyi Jungne, the head tulku (incarnate lama). He is considered by many to be the founder of the monastery. Palpung subsequently became the most important of the five large monasteries under the Dege King's patronage. It is also the largest and most important Kagyu monastery in Dege.

For over 22 years, students from all over the world have come to the University of Southern California's School of Architecture for a taste of college life and an introduction to college level study of architecture and design of the built environment. If you are considering a career in architecture, engineering, or urban planning you will have the chance to try out your interests in a studio setting at one of the top ten architecture schools.
    Educational Intent
The USC Exploration of Architecture program provides high school students from across the country and around the world with an intensive and in-depth introduction to the world of architecture and the experience of architecture school. The goal is to help the students make an educated decision regarding their own career direction while at the same time providing the students with a wide exposure to the diverse and colorful surroundings of Los Angeles.
The Exploration of Architecture summer high school program has been held at the USC School of Architecture since 1982. During the past twenty years, this highly successful and popular program has grown and been developed into one of the most comprehensive and rewarding programs of its kind in the country.

Student Work Yale Building Project Since 1967, the Yale School of Architecture has offered its first-year students the unique chance to design and build a structure as part of their graduate education. Unique among architecture schools, this program is mandatory for all members of the class. Undertaken in cooperation with Neighborhood Housing, a local nonprofit agency, the Building Project results in a single-family house in an economically depressed neighborhood. The late Charles W. Moore, who headed Yale's Department of Architecture (later the School of Architecture) from 1965 to 1971, founded the First-year Building Project in collaboration with faculty member Kent Bloomer. Moore saw that getting out of the studio and building something would have several benefits for the students. As a believer in simple tectonics and basic technologies, he hoped students woul dbe inspired by the mechanics of building. In the midst of the student unrest of the 1960s he saw the project as a way for students to commit to positive social action by building for the poor.
The earliest projects were outside of New Haven, and included community centers in Appalachia and a series of camp buildings in Connecticut. Reduced budgets in the 1970s and 80s, as well as increasing pressure on student schedules, led to a scaling back of the program and projects-which included several park pavilions-were confined to the New Haven area.
