Author(s): Publisher: Birkhäuser ISBN: Format: softback Price: Review Date: May 23, 2000 Review: The basis for this oeuvre of Adolf Krischanitz, the freelance Viennese architect, is his 'double strategy': 'the programmatic dualism of theory and practice, the method of continuing dialogue between conception and reception, stringent realization and contemplative assimilation' ( Friedrich Achleitner). This well-illustrated book documents Krischanitz's furniture designs, exhibitions and interiors as well as his architecture. His buildings exhibit an affinity to the usual everyday processes and show his individual development of contemporary Minimalism.

Tadao Ando Named 1995 Laureate
Tadao Ando, a 53 year old architect who lives and works in Osaka, Japan, was named the eighteenth Laureate of the Pritzker Architecture Prize. In making the announcement, Jay A. Pritzker, president of The Hyatt Foundation, which established the award in 1979, quoted from the jury's citation which describes Ando's architecture as "an assemblage of artistically composed surprises in space and form . . . that both serve and inspire. . . with never a predictable moment as one moves throughout his buildings.
"Ando is the third Japanese architect to be selected for his profession's highest honor which carries a $100,000 grant. The formal presentation was made on May 22 in the Grand Trianon Palace at Versailles, France.
Pritzker affirmed the jury's choice, saying, "Ando conceives his projects as places of habitation not as abstract designs in a landscape. It is not surprising that he is often referred to by his professional peers and critics as being as much a builder as an architect. That emphasizes how important he considers craftsmanship in accomplishing his designs. He requires absolute precision in the making and casting of his concrete forms to achieve the smooth, clean and perfect concrete for his structures."
Even though nearly all of his projects make use of cement as the primary building material, he was a carpenter's apprentice for short time where he learned the craftsmanship of traditional Japanese wooden construction. In fact, one of his most widely known structures was built almost entirely of wood, the Japanese Pavilion for Expo '92 in Spain.

    Concept:
The trailers are removed, and the Wellman Courtyard is transformed into a social place and sculpture garden, framed by a double arc of trees and the magnificent buildings of the Agriculture Complex.
While each new work of architecture should respond to its own time and place, it should also embody the grace, presence, and civic character of our historic structures. Campus buildings endure far longer than their initial contents, and should be designed to embody the spirit of the university, not merely the needs of current programs, nor ephemeral stylistic trends. They should have the quality, durability, and flexibility to serve the university well for generations.
    Strategic Goals
Capital investment shall both preserve the campus' architectural legacy and improve the visual quality of the campus, by:
    • ensuring the design of each new and renovated building improves the image and experience of the campus as a whole.
    • ensuring each new and renovated building has the quality, durability and flexibility to serve the university for generations.
    • ensuring new buildings enhance the spatial and architectural integrity of the classical core.

by Botond Bognar The designs of Japanese architect Kengo Kuma critically engage the materiality of architecture in order to challenge its usual meanings, and in so doing, to thwart the emergence of architecture as an object. As he has shown in many of his projects, Kuma is determined to "dissolve" the materials that he uses, or to choose materials that are less substantial, stating, "If materials are thoroughly particlized, they are transient, like rainbows." The application of new materials and the uncommon use of old materials are not limited to Japan, but both have been so extensive here that much of the recent success achieved by Japanese architects can be attributed in large part to those devices. Among the growing number of new materials architects have experimented with are: Teflon fiber fabric, polycarbonate, liquid crystal glass, cardboard, paper, corrugated metal, and perforated aluminum, in order to configure lighter structures and more fluid and ambiguous spatial matrices. Shigeru Ban has long been advocating the use of large cardboard tubes, which he used for his Paper Church in Kobe (1995) and the Japanese Pavilion at the Expo 2000 in Hannover, Germany, among other examples of his "paper architecture." Shuhei Endo, on the other hand, has started to use ordinary corrugated metal sheets in unusual, fluidly curving, and often spiral shapes.
