Six Month Update On December 26th, a series of earthquakes occurred in the area of the western coast of Northern Sumatra, Andaman Islands and Nicobar Islands. The two strongest earthquakes had the magnitude of 8.9 and 7.3. The earthquakes caused tsunamis impacting nine countries in the region leaving more than 150,000 dead and a further 4M forced from their homes . Over 12 countries are affected as far away as Somalia and Kenya with Aceh province in Indonesia and Sri Lanka said to be worst hit.
Within hours of the disaster Architecture for Humanity and worldchanging.com , a web site covering "Tools, models and ideas for building a better future" jointly launched a reconstruction appeal with a target of $100,000. Within four months we have raised close to $400,000 from over 3500 individual donors.
Donations came from seventh graders, general contractors, established design professionals to architecture students. In addition to many individuals who have responded, small businesses and individual groups ran fund raising initiatives on our behalf.
This appeal, coupled with pro-bono design services and material donations, will allow for the building of more than just basic shelter, allowing the construction of schools, infrastructure and medical clinics. With a more holistic and sustainable approach of reconstruction

One in seven people currently live in what the western media call "slums"; these include large urban unplanned settlements, refugee camps and IDP (Internally Displaced Persons) encampments. In less than 20 years the United Nations estimates this number will be closer to one in three.
Although commonly described as temporary shelter, many live in these makeshift environments for years or even decades. In late 2005 we will challenge the design world to examine ways to improve the design and planning of these settlements by launching "Rethinking Tent City', an international call for ideas to create architectural and planning interventions in order to create social and economic change. This project will focus on a potential to achieve target 11 of the Millennium Development Goals to help improve the lives of at least 100 million slum dwellers by 2020.

Architecture (in Greek = first and = craftsmanship) is the art and science of designing buildings and structures. A wider definition would include within its scope the design of the total built environment, from the macrolevel of town planning urban design , and landscape architecture to the microlevel of furniture The Parthenon on top of the Acropolis Athens Greece

Scope and intentions
According to the very earliest surviving work on the subject, Vitruvius De Architectura , good buildings should have Beauty (Venustas), Firmness (Firmitas) and Utility (Utilitas); architecture can be said to be a balance and coordination among these three elements, with none overpowering the others. A modern day definition sees architecture as addressing aesthetic, structural and functional considerations. However, looked at another way, function itself is seen as encompassing all criteria, including aesthetic and psychological ones. Architecture is a multi-disciplinary field, including within its fold

architecture Last modified: Thursday, July 15, 2004 (n.) A design. The term architecture can refer to either hardware or software , or to a combination of hardware and software. The architecture of a system always defines its broad outlines, and may define precise mechanisms as well. An open architecture allows the system to be connected easily to devices and programs made by other manufacturers. Open architectures use off-the-shelf components and conform to approved standards . A system with a closed architecture, on the other hand, is one whose design is

Monday, November 10, 2003 On Architecture: UW's William H. Gates Hall projects a spirit of welcome openness By SHERI OLSON
SEATTLE P-I ARCHITECTURE CRITIC If one of architecture's uses is to signal sea changes in institutions, then the University of Washington's new $80 million law school broadcasts a mea culpa. The old law school, bunkerlike Condon Hall, resembled the last bastion of an embattled male-dominated profession holed up behind narrow slots in the concrete sunscreens. In contrast, the new brick and glass William H. Gates Hall designed by Kohn Pederson Fox of New York (in collaboration with Mahlum Architects of Seattle) has wings that reach out, projecting a spirit of openness and inclusiveness. [ Note: Pederson was misspelled in the original version of this article.

Nature of the Work Working Conditions Employment Training, Other Qualifications, and Advancement ... Sources of Additional Information
Significant Points
  • A bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture is the minimum requirement for entry-level jobs; many employers prefer to hire landscape architects who also have completed at least one internship.
  • A growing demand for incorporating natural elements into human-made environments, along with the need to meet a wide array of environmental restrictions, will increase the demand for landscape architects.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Everyone enjoys attractively designed residential areas, public parks and playgrounds, college campuses, shopping centers, golf courses, parkways, and industrial parks. Landscape architects design these areas so that they are not only functional, but also beautiful, and compatible with the natural environment. They plan the location of buildings, roads, and walkways, and the arrangement of flowers, shrubs, and trees. In planning a site, landscape architects first consider the nature and purpose of the project and the funds available. They analyze the natural elements of the site, such as the climate, soil, slope of the land, drainage, and vegetation; observe where sunlight falls on the site at different times of the day and examine the site from various angles; and assess the effect of existing buildings, roads, walkways, and utilities on the project.

"In addition to the immediacy of its unique formal and functional qualities, the house is rich in references to historic architecture. The monumental street facade alludes to Michaelangelo's Porta Pia in Rome and the back wall of the Nymphaeum at Palladio and Alessandro Vittoria's Villa Barbaro at Maser. On the other hand, the broken pediment recalls the 'duality' of the facade of Luigi Moretti's apartment house on the Via Parioli in Rome." The Creator's Words "The architect stresses that 'The house is big as well as little, by which I mean that it this a little house with big scale. ...Outside, the manifestations of big scale are the main elements, which are big and few in number and central or symmetrical in position, as well as the simplicity and consistency of the form and silhouette of the whole....The main reason for the large scale is to counterbalance the complexity. Complexity in combination with scale in small buildings means busyness. Like the other organized complexities here, the big scale in the small building achieves tension rather than nervousness....' "

The Bibliotheca Alexandrina is a revival of the legendary ancient library built in classical Greek times. The rebuilding of the library has returned Alexandria to its former status as a centre for learning and exchange and provided the city with a landmark building. The spirit of international cooperation in which the library was conceived, funded, designed and implemented has been maintained in its management to create an institution that is truly global in its outlook. At the same time, the building is technically outstanding. Click on link above for more information.
