GLENN MURCUTT: BUILDINGS + PROJECTS 1962-2003 [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] Francoise Fromonot begins her book with the staggering fact that during his 30 years of practice Glenn Murcutt has built more than 500 houses in Australia. That, alone, encapsulates much about the architectthe extraordinarily energetic work-ethic of a man who has insisted, during all of that time, on operating almost always as a sole-practitioner, taking full responsibility for every job and every detaila man at his drawing-board in the corner of an untidy suburban Sydney semi-detached house (Fromonot writes, 'It comes as a surprise to discover that his limpid architecture is designed in such a shambles'); and it draws attention to the fact that despite his international reputation and innumerable overtures from prospective overseas clients, Murcutt refuses to work outside his homeland, where his architecture originates in, and exists in resonance with, the physical, climatic, and cultural context.

Whether you are building your own home or designing a commercial complex, choosing the right architect is vital to a successful project. Architecture firms come in a variety of sizes and types. The statistically average firm is made up of 9 or 10 people; many firms are smaller. There are also very large firms with staffs of 100 or more. Some firms specialize in one or more project or facility types. Others have very specific specialties. Some firms include in-house engineering (structural, mechanical, electrical, etc.) or other design disciplines (planning, urban design, landscape architecture, interior design, etc.) Many architects introduce specialty disciplines into their projects through appropriate consultants. Each architecture firm brings its own combination of skills, expertise, interests, and values to its projects. All good architects will listen to you and translate your ideas into a viable construction project. Look for a good listener and you'll find a good architect. The Right Architect If you are a first-time client, or an experienced client facing a new situation, you probably have many questions about architect selection. Some of the more frequently asked questions are addressed here.

Beyeler Foundation Museum Riehen (Basel), Switzerland Architect: Renzo Piano. Date completed: 1997 The Beyeler Museum has been acclaimed for the classical serenity of its design, but it is also an efficient green machine. Perforated metal panels and a translucent glass roof modulate light in the galleries. The panels also create a thermal buffer that reduces fluctuations in temperature. The external planar facade protects very finely computer-controlled perforated aluminum blinds that still allow views out when closed. Behind them is a highly insulated double-glazed argon-filled facade for thermal comfort. The building's design concept was to try to create the best level of comfort under artificial conditions. Each room has individual controls in addition to computer controlled light and temperature sensors. Source: http://www.fosterandpartners.com/projects/0458.html

Architecture of the Incas The Incas enjoyed making buildings that go with the landscape. The buildings are made by well-cut stone. Doorways and niches sloped inwards slightly towards the top. Most of the roofs also sloped inwards toward the top. The architecture was mostly simple and formal. The decorations were mostly on the inside of the door except for the brightly -colored doorways. The paintings inside were very simple. It was not to save labour, but just because the Incas liked it that way. The Incas were such good builders that even today you could not stick a thin knife through any of it. Most of the Incas work was sturdy enough that it survived earthquakes. Click on the graphic on the right for a photograph of the the Inca city of Cuzco where you can see the old architecture combined with the new. On the coast the architecture is different. The houses there are made of mud brick and not stone. But near the coast brick was not needed.

Controlled by a computerized tracking system, the belts rotate automatically to follow the public, turning their buckles slowly to face passers-by. When several people are in the room their presence affects the entire group of belts, creating chaotic patterns of interference. Non-linear behaviours emerge such as turbulence, eddies and relatively quiet regions. One of the stated aims of this piece is to visualize complex dynamics, turning a condition of pure surveillance into an unpredictable connective system. "Standards and Double Standards" creates an "absent crowd" using a fetish of paternal authority: the belt. Industry Overview
Asia is the world's biggest construction market and China accounts for the bulk of construction projects. The Beijing 2008 Olympics, the Western Development Strategy and National Housing Reform all provide enormous opportunities for foreign companies interested in China's Architecture and Engineering ACE Service Market.
China's construction industry has experienced consistent growth over the last several years. Infrastructure investment is a key element of China's Tenth Five Year Plan (2001-2005), and is focused on roads, rail systems, bridges, ports and airports. This has led to an increasing number of foreign ACE firms becoming involved in China. The exchange of design concepts, project management experience and construction techniques have been invaluable to both foreign and local ACE firms. Currently only a limited number of foreign ACE firms have established permanent offices in China, and most foreign companies participate on a project-by-project basis. However, pending legislation may limit project-by-project access to the market for foreign ACE firms.
The Construction industry has contributed to the sustainable development of China's economy. According to statistics from the State Statistics Bureau, the construction industry accounts for 6.6% of the national GDP, making it the 4th biggest industry over the last five years. By the end of 2001, there were 36.69 million people working in the construction industry, and there are 65,671 ACE companies in China.

Designing Sustainable
Human Environments . . .
Farr Associates designs to create places that enrich human life while minimizing negative environmental impacts. We see our work happening at the dynamic intersection of three disciplines: Architecture, Planning, and Preservation. Our work is inspired by our mission: designing sustainable environments Since the firm was established in 1990, we have worked on projects of many scales, striving always to create healthful (and intelligent) buildings and city spaces. Budgets are always an important constraint, but we believe every project can shine regardless. We prefer a personal approach, listening carefully to gain an understanding of clients' needs and wants, the project constraints, and helping to find the special opportunities.
