Kemper House
Vorhes House Hayner House Elk Lick House ... Mercantile Museum Store
The Kemper House is an example of frontier architecture. Log construction was based on necessity. Kemper is a double-pen log house. This means two rooms, as opposed to a one-room cabin. Kemper has all the features of a house: a full second story, a cellar (not those of the log cabin in fiction and film) and a porch on each side. The front porch was for visitors and social activities; the back porch was for work.
Access to the second floor was by an enclosed staircase off the back porch. The staircase was constructed to protect the stairs from the weather. The stairs were "winders" or "tight winders," which was a quick way around a corner while still going up. Winders are a way of squeezing the maximum rise (height) in the stairs into the shortest possible run (length).
Building a log house took a considerable amount of labor to cut and shape the logs. Precautions were taken to protect the house from fire, like keeping the kitchen in a separate building. The house is made of poplar logs cut on the site. The house is about 85% original. Where logs were missing due to the changes made by the Kemper family, old logs were "cannibalized" from the other log buildings HSO had in storage.
The logs are joined together in an inverted "V" notch, sometimes called a "steeple" notch, and are chinked with lime mortar. (There were plenty of shells available for the lime.)

Folk Architecture Survival in the remote areas of the Southern Plains during the nineteenth century demanded ingenuity, and the ingenuity of the people who dug into that soil is often demonstrated in their unique and resourceful architecture. "Folk Architecture of the Southern Plains," an exhibition highlighting the architecture of this area, was developed under the direction of Am Henderson, professor of architecture at Oklahoma University.

Henderson's research took him throughout the Southern Plains including the western parts of Oklahoma, Kansas and Texas, and the eastern sections of New Mexico and Colorado. He was searching for examples of "folk architecture," a tern that distinguishes vernacular, everyday buildings constructed by the people who use them from buildings designed or influenced by professional architects. "These were anonymous buildings," Henderson says. "No architect, no professional designer, yet a lot of these buildings are really good architecture in a very orthodox sense nice proportions, appealing geometry, form and space, light and shadows all those attributes that we use to characterize good buildings found in such things as barns, for instance." The fruits of his efforts are displayed in this exhibition, including pictures of ranching structures, dugouts, sod houses, silos, and barns, all with the distinctive stamp of the people who built them.

Gossow applies creativity and skill to historic preservation
By Ann Nicholson
Jenny Gossow's vision for this 1870s barn on Manchester Road in Des Peres transforms it into an entry and locker facility for a proposed new municipal pool.
For most motorists cruising down Manchester Road, the old barn tucked behind a neighborhood bar is likely to be nothing more than a red blur in their peripheral vision. But for Jenny Gossow, a master's degree candidate in the School of Architecture, the 1870s barn represents a piece of our heritage that not only should be preserved, but also could be adapted for public use. As her final architectural design project, Gossow made a design proposal to restore the barn, which is less than a mile from Interstate 270, and convert it for use by the city of Des Peres' Department of Parks and Recreation. Currently in relatively shabby condition and completely surrounded by a parking lot, the barn is one of four period buildings clustered together on Manchester Road, amid ubiquitous strip malls. Not far from the West County Center mega-mall, the privately owned barn is more akin to Des Peres Park, which lies just to the north. After consulting with Parks and Recreation officials, Gossow decided to propose a new municipal pool with the barn transformed into the main entryway and locker room facility. Her design also calls for removing the fence separating the barn from the park and completely re-landscaping the surrounding asphalt.

Related Story This article originally appeared in the IOWA BARN FOUNDATION NEWSLETTER, September 2000. President's Barn Cattle Barns Horse Barns Judging Pavilions ... Dairy Barns On March 22, 1858, Governor of Iowa Ralph P. Lowe signed the legislative bill establishing the State Agricultural College and Model Farm. The bill provided for a board of trustees to manage the model farm and college to be developed. At the time, the site of the institution was not determined and in the spring of 1859 the trustees addressed the location issue. Several Iowa communities presented proposals to the trustees. Residents of Story and Boone counties presented an attractive proposal to locate the new institution at a site west of Squaw Creek and downtown Ames. The proposal included significant gifts of land and funding to assist in developing the College site. The Story County site was selected by the trustees on June 21, 1859. The first concern was establishing the model farm specified in the legislation. Priority was given to two buildings. A farm house and livestock barn were both considered essential as a beginning, and construction of these two started in 1860. Construction of Old Main, the first academic building, was delayed until 1865. The delay was thought to be due, in part at least, to economic conditions related to the Civil War. Architectural Treasures Many of the Iowa State barns reflected a common thread in architectural style. To some extent this was because a limited number of architects did the designs. In addition, function of the facilities dictated common elements of design. While each building was different in detail, all had to meet standard functions for housing animals and the storage of feed resources. In viewing the buildings over the years and in looking at pictures of those long since buried as dusty rubble in unmarked graves, there are common threads that characterize the buildings. They were modest in size, usually rather austere in internal finish, simple and functional in design and in the case of the major barns were built of durable materials. As these served over the years they remained straight and true and, even though often neglected in terms of maintenance, were strong in frame and ready for refurbishing when their turn came.

Partial Architectural Drawing of the West Side of the Dairy Barn (later Ag. Utilities Building), ca. 1907.
This drawing is one of several made by Portland architect John Bennes and his colleagues for use in constructing the Oregon Agricultural College Dairy Barn. [OSU Archives RG 193.]
Technical Note:
Oregon State University has long been noted for its picturesque campus and architecture. Unfortunately, only one of OSU's beautiful early 20th century barns still stands. Between 1900 and 1940, Oregon State built many outstanding examples of barns, most of which have succumbed to fire, neglect, or obsolescence.
The first college barn was constructed in 1889, an octagonal structure with a cupola and two wings that were later additions. This building served as the college's primary barn until 1909, when construction of a new barn was completed. Between 1908 and 1937, at least seven barns were constructed on the college grounds. John V. Bennes, a noted Portland architect, designed six of the barns, as well as many other campus buildings during that period. Today, only one of the six barns designed by Bennes the Veterinary Dairy Barn has survived.

GLEN DALE FARM BARNS
CORNWALL VERMONT
According to the Vermont Historic Sites and Structures Survey, the original farm at the Glen Dale site was settled in 1787 by Abraham Williamson of Washington, Massachusetts. Architectural Historian Thomas Visser reports that although the original farmhouse does not stand, the existing English barn was probably built by Williamson in the 1700s as it is representative of the first major type of agricultural buildings constructed in Vermont. Significant features of the English barn include hand-hewn, post-and-beam, hardwood timber frame, with flared columns and half dovetail tenons on the girts (see drawing). Most of the boards sheathing the walls appear to be original as they are up to 23 inches wide fastened with hand-wrought nails. In the 18th century, this structure would have been a general purpose barn, sheltering grain and hay crops as well as farm animals. The Glendale Barns Architectural Conservation Assessment, partially funded by a grant from the Preservation Trust of Vermont, makes the statement regarding the English barn that it is "... historically significant as evidence of the initial permanent English-speaking settlement of this region of Vermont." The construction materials and remarkable joinery in the English barn speak eloquently of this period in local history. Glen Dale farm attained its present appearance under the ownership of Milo B. Williamson, a breeder of Merino sheep and "gentleman's driving horses." The present Italianate style farmhouse and additional barns are pictured in Burgett's 1876 Illustrated and Topographical Atlas of the State of Vermont". The barn complex is remarkably intact when compared to the Burgett

Roy Stryker, whose work recording the Depression, rural America, and the impact of the oil industry worldwide had made him a dominant figure in documentary photography, was recruited to oversee the project. He arrived in Pittsburgh in July 1950, and established the PPL by recruiting photographers from his earlier projects as well as young artists at the beginning of their careers. He sent them out into the city to record its present and its future, its harsh realities and its aspirations. The photographs in this exhibition are but a tiny fraction of the thousands of images that make up the PPL. Though few in number, they convey the richness and complexity of the collection. They provide a record of our past, offering a glimpse of the dynamic transformation of Pittsburgh at a critical moment in its development and insight into the lives of its citizens.

The Jones Log Barn
In 2004, a nonprofit organization called the Tredyffrin Historic Preservation Trust (THPT), was formed by a group of concerned citizens and HARB members to address the needs of Tredyffrin's historic resources. The Trust is now actively campaigning to raise the estimated $400,000 required to reconstruct the barn in Tredyffrin's newly opened 90 acre Wilson Farm Park. This is a three phase project. In Phase I we catalogued and stored the barn, organized the Trust, started fund raising, and repaid $25,000 borrowed from Tredyffrin Township to dismantle the barn. In Phase II we have hired a qualified architectural restoration firm (Frens and Frens Restoration Architects of West Chester) to prepare the plans, repair and replace selected logs, which are the core of the structure, do preliminary site work and begin to develop the exhibits to be housed in the center. The Barn when rebuilt, will house an educational and visitors center. We plan on completing Phase II in 2005. Phase III, construction and installation of exhibits, will take place in 2006. Our goal is to have the Barn and Visitors Center operating by 2007, which is the Township's 300th anniversary. The Trust envisions promoting the Jones Barn as part of several themes, including; Chester County Welsh Heritage (in conjunction with the County's heritage tourism program), early history of the Township, Chester County barn construction, the Township's place in the American Revolutionary War and in the early development of our nation, as well as a plan to honor the Township's 1900 veterans and citizen soldiers. The role of Valley Creek, a tributary to the Schuylkill River, in the encampment at Valley Forge and in the economic development of the area will also be explored. We will be developing exhibits with adults and students in mind, working with local schools to integrate the barn into the fabric of local history.
