Vernacular Architecture There are many wonderful building styles from all over the world that can inform us with their shapes, materials, arrangements, decorations, concepts for heating and cooling, etc. Vernacular architecture has been loosing ground over the last couple of centuries, as modern methods prevail. This is unfortunate since many of the old ways employ natural materials and simple concepts that are energy efficient. Also the buildings themselves are often beautiful. Perhaps you will find some ideas from among these pages to help with your own designs. RESOURCES SEARCH THIS SITE ARTISTIC POSTERS

The complete Connected Farm consists of about 8 models including The Henry Ford Farmhouse, two barns, two sheet layout, corn crib, silo, etc In the 19th Century, many New England farmers built small separate outbuildings clustered near the farmhouse and barn to support their various ventures. This concept evolved, originally in southwestern Maine and much of New Hampshire, to connecting the house and barn with a string of sheds and additions to contain the various spaces for work, storage, and domestic needs. Perhaps the connected barn design is best understood as a reflection of the quest to improve conditions through innovation of nineteenth-century farmers. By rejecting traditional solutions and by taking risks they joined in the spirit of invention that was revolutionizing industry and consumer life. Connected architecture balanced the convenient advantages of improved access between the house and the barn against the added risks of fire. In keeping with the spirit of it all, farmers often moved existing outbuildings together to form a connected farm As late as the 1800s, connected architecture remained rare outside Maine and New Hampshire, although writers continued to praise the design, as in this 1893 description of a New England barn in The Cultivator and Country Gentleman:

Book Description: David Larkin, an internationally known editor and book designer, first tasted country living at the age of three, as a refugee from wartime London in rural England. Country Wisdom, the first in a projected series of three volumes, is centered around country houses and their outbuildings. Larkin offers a lively, informative text and more than 200 full-color photographs. The text includes everything from vernacular architecture in a historical perspective to restoration and maintenance; from country customs to seasonal festivals; from the kitchens of resourceful country cooks to the secrets of underground storage; from traditional recipes for cleaning formulas to the proper pitch of a roof.

The Ritz Theater
In Brunswick, Georgia We spotted this marquee on the way to Jekyll Island. The Ritz Theatre, located within the "Old Town Brunswick" National Register Historic District, was built in 1898 to house the Grand Opera House, retail establishments, and the general offices of the Brunswick and Birmingham Railroad. Originally, the Grand Opera House, a three-story Victorian building featuring ornate brick and stone work, was built for the legitimate stage. Later, it served as a theatre for vaudeville. In the 1930s, as motion pictures became the rage, the Opera House was converted into a movie palace. To give the building a more modern art deco look, the first-story brick work was covered with carrara glass, and an elaborate marquee and cascading sign were added. Thus, the Grand Opera House became the Ritz Theatre. In 1980, the City of Brunswick purchased the Ritz, and again, the theatre was modernized and substantially altered; however, the Ritz sign was left intact. Under the management of the Golden Isles Arts and Humanities Association since 1989, the Ritz is returning to its roots. Recent "cosmetic surgery" has revealed parts of the original brickwork, storefronts, transoms, and glass, while live performances again grace the Ritz stage. Further restoration will offer space for artists' studios and classes on the second and third floors. Older structures were built to last. They also possess timeless aesthetics. Take barns, for example. The recreation area is blessed with many barns which have lasted for well over a century. A number of them are actively used and maintained; some are in a state of ruin, the victims of neglect and long deferred maintenance. Their pending downfall stirs something in all of us. And while Eric Sloane's classic book, An Age of Barns, , asks us to appreciate the beauty of weathered wood in the state of "pleasing decay"as one of nature's special masterpieces, our Northeastern climate has little mercy for wooden ruins. Moisture and insects together with freeze and thaw cycles inevitably take their toll. We intervene, then, to delay their demise. If they are put to use again, perhaps we may even entertain the possibility of their continued survival. The interest in doing so is gaming popularity. Across the nation, good folks are enthusiastically recycling and adaptively reusing barns for new purposes such as office space, antique galleries, and even dance or concert halls. From a historical perspective, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, in its program

Joan Raiselis, Greenhouse volunteer
In the 1960s, where I keep my childhood, the notion of volunteering meant one of two things: “helping out” at your child’s school collecting lunch money or actually working in the cafeteria kitchen spooning out sloppy Joe’s or English Muffin pizzas; or, on the other side of the spectrum, “volunteering” at the Junior League in the center of town. I suspect that within the communities of women (and they were mostly women), who were regulars to the volunteering routine, there were other possibilities but it was from this two-option frame of mind where I began my own quest.
It was not until I slid into my fifth decade and began to reevaluate the personal and professional choices I had made in my life that I realized changes were in order. I did not divorce my husband, I did not pierce my navel, I did not augment the size or shape of my breasts, nor did I tuck my tummy. I decided to volunteer at one of the organizations around my neighborhood that sparked my interest both in the work that I might perform as well as their mission. Recognizing the fact that I may not be content or fulfilled by the first or second institution I would try, the process continued for a couple of years before I found a sure fit.
When the Stone Barns Center opened in Pocantico Hills in May, it was a culmination of years of coordination and planning behind the scenes but also, of much talk and speculation in the neighborhood. For me, it would become the answer to my need to feel productive within my community, as well as the personal fulfillment of a long held dream to work a farm. The fact that it is an organization bent on teaching the basics of farming to a population who are so rarely exposed to the actual process, and that it does it organically, ethically, and with a sense of the local community is fertilizer on the compost, so to speak.
