Old barns are vulnerable to being pulled apart for firewood, to being bulldozed CHANGING ATTITUDES IN ANERICAN architecture Reviewed by Naomi Miller,
    http://www.nbm.org/blueprints/80s/fall84/page3/page3.htm
    Look at Barns
Interior of early 19th century barn, Corner Ketch, Delaware.
Old barns are vulnerable to being pulled apart for firewood, to being bulldozed for a new highway or to just deteriorating over tine from neglect and abandonment. In the summer of 1980 a group of individuals in Delaware, who were concerned about the neglect of these rural buildings formed an organization they named, "The Friends of Friendless Farm Buildings." Interested in preserving a record of these structures an drawing attention to their importance as an American building type, they have begun recording significant examples through a uniform method of field notes, photographs and measured drawings. In addition to recording and befriending various barn types, the Delaware group has placed under its wing many other kinds of rural structures including slave quarters, smoke and meat houses, kitchens and dairies. As these buildings are recorded every effort is being made to obtain the maximum amount of information about their history in some cases these vernacular structures have undergone as many as seven different rebuildings. The group has made detailed drawings of the elaborate carpentry techniques employed, recorded the construction details of a tobacco press, as well as rendering, in some cases, the contents of an entire building. The activities of the "Friends" have also spun off some individual projects. One of these, directed by Bernard Herman and known as the "New Castle County, Delaware Agricultural Buildings Project," systematically documented in the course of a year over fifteen structures in measured drawings. The most common type of agricultural building to be found here in Delaware is the gable fronted one-story-and-a-loft timber framed granary or crib barn. In these structures each gable contains a set of double end doors and the center consists of a wide open runway that is connected to the farmyard by an earthen ramp. Cribs, running the entire length of the building, flank both sides of the runway and the loft space contains bins for shelled corn or threshed grain.

Book Reviews of Barns of Yesteryear
Barns of Yesteryears is a charming bookthe kind you want to keep out on the end-table, in the waiting room or anywhere one might be looking for a pleasant, quick 'read'. This book can be picked up, read a bit, put down, and up again until complete, and even over and over again! Barns of Yesteryears "Dale Watkins states, 'In some parts of farm country, particularly in more affluent areas, each farmer tried to surpass his neighbor in constructing a bigger and better barn. All were built for utility, but many were craftily constructed with an eye toward appearance. The carpenter would identify his skill in some way, from the many roof lines to the cleverly hewn door and window moldings.' These barns can be seen over several pages interlaced with descriptions of not only the functional parts inside the barns, but of the equipment ancillary to the barn, as well as processes for keeping ice and water. "Dale Watkins' writings are enhanced by thoughts penned by other folks who grew up in and with these 'barns of yesteryears'. Bernard Dowling writes, 'This barn's been here all my life anchoring me to four generations of family and to this patch of ground. It's a big barn, long and wide; in fact it has the appearance and even the attitude of an old broody hen, whose business it is to provide protection and shelter for life, often new life....In the winter, I could spend all day in the barn tending livestock, recognizing the smell of rain or snow in the air, different kinds of hay, pitch from some of the wood, fresh manure still steaming in the chilled air, listening to the storm outside, feeling snug.' To this 'California girl' this is awesome imagery! I'm sure it speaks out loud and clear to most llama owning people.

    Rural Architecture and Material Culture
A Bibliography by Tom Isern and Tricia Velure
You can get information on historic architecture and architectural styles from many sources. For instance, this site has links to the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and that site includes a helpful bibliography. Working in rural Bowman County, however, we realized that we often were dealing with structures that had little to do with high architecture and were not much treated in the standard sources on architectural style. So we began compiling a list of good sources for the interpretation of rural architecture and material culture, which we offer here. This bib is by no means exhaustive, but we post it because others might find it useful, and because we welcome suggested additions. One more caveat: This bib emphasizes the material culture of the plains, and is less concerned with other regions. The photo at right, incidentally, is from the Fred Hulstrand Collection in the NDSU Institute for Regional Studies. It depicts that classic vernacular dwelling of homesteaders on the northern plains, the tarpaper shack.

There is no record of a barn being built specifically for horses until 1870, however. Photographs suggest that some of the early structures were probably used for horses as well as cattle. First Horse Barn, 1870-1900. The need for the first building designated as a horse stable was endorsed by the Iowa State College trustees as early as 1868 and an appropriation of $2,500 was made by the legislature the same year. Construction was not started until 1870, however. The barn was 30 x 40 feet with loft and basement and built of brick. Apparently, design and construction were accomplished by College employees in that no architect or contractor are noted in records. This barn was razed in 1900 and replaced with a brick structure that would serve as the horse barn until it was remodeled in 1930-1931 for use by the Landscape Architecture Department. April 10 Program to Launch Library of Congress/W.W. Norton Multimedia Series on Architecture, Design and Engineering
6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 10 , in Madison Hall on the first floor, James Madison Memorial Building, 101 Independence Ave., S.E., Washington, D.C. Tickets are not required. John Michael Vlach, professor of American Studies at George Washington University, will discuss "Barns" at the program, sponsored jointly by the Library's Center for American Architecture, Design and Engineering; the Center for the Book; the Publishing Office; the American Folklife Center; and the Historic American Buildings Survey/Historic American Engineering Record of the National Park Service. "Barns" presents a new perspective on American history through one of America's unique cultural landmarks. Drawn from the vast holdings of the Library of Congress, more than 800 illustrations provide a tour of significant barns across the United States, from New England to the Great Lakes, the South, the Midwest, and the Far West. "Barns" is an invaluable tool for architects, historians, students, and all those who love barns. It traces geographical and chronological continuities of barn type, design, and construction, as well as Dutch, German, French, and Spanish influences. Captions identify each document and building, and images are included on a CD-ROM with a link to the Library's high-resolution files.
