Ann Beha Associates, Inc.
Ann Beha Architects has more than two decades design experience specializing in historic buildings, which embrace the future and respect the past. Its practice is to focus on building structures today that are timeless and beautiful. The firm has achieved architectural leadership in design of environments that support visual and performing arts and civic, educational, and spiritual life, recognizing the enduring value of structures that are part of the fabric of our communities and our collective experience. Ann Beha earned her name for blending old and new in 1995 with Boston's Jordan Hall, a complex restoration of the 92-year-old hall. Other major projects have included crafting the master plan for the 100-year-old Boston Symphony Hall and creating renovation plans for the headquarters of the Massachusetts Historical Society, both buildings registered as National Historic Landmarks. A recent completion of the Portland, Oregon Art Museum ranks among one of the firms larger undertakings. Renovations and additions include the Nantucket Athenaeum, historic churches, and dozens of libraries, museums, theaters, school dormitories and chapels. Ann M. Beha FAIA, is the founding principal of Ann Beha Architects. Her work over the past twenty-three years had focused on the revitalization and creation of landmark building throughout the United States. Her architectural design incorporates an artistic vision and dynamic solutions for cultural resources. They also provide cost-effective improvement for operations and maintenance of museums, libraries, and performing arts.

66. George Washington Maher
A biography of Maher by John Edward Powell, from biographies of prominent historic architects, designers and builders in Fresno and the Central Valley.
http://historicfresno.org/bio/maher.htm
George Washington Maher
George Washington Maher was born in Mill Creek, West Virginia, on December 25, 1864. During his teens he apprenticed to prominent Chicago architects Augustus Bauer and Henry Hill. Maher joined the office of Shingle style architect J. L. Silsbee as a draftsman in 1887, where he worked with fellow draftsman Frank Lloyd Wright. In 1888 Maher formed a short-lived partnership with Cecil Corwin. After Corwin left, Maher practiced alone until 1914, when his son Philip joined him for a brief period. After the war the firm became George W. Maher and Son. During the 1890s Maher worked in a variety of styles. His Shingle and Queen Anne projects were widely reviewed in the journal Inland Architect during this period. Maher modeled his design for the Fresno Library and Water Tower Maher's most important and productive period came after 1904. His bold and idiosyncratic residential interpretations of the Prairie ideal were built throughout Chicago's suburbs, including Oak Park, Evanston, Kenilworth, and Winnetka. He developed the campus plan for Northwestern University in 1907 and designed Swift Hall and Patten Gymnasium on that campus. He also did a great deal of work in Wausau, Wisconsin. After World War I, Maher became a vocal proponent of community planning and prepared development plans for Glencoe and Kenilworth. He is also credited with forming the committee that launched the first efforts to restore the Fine Arts Building designed by Charles Atwood for the 1893 Columbian Exposition at Chicago.

Architects of Ireland - Sir Edwin Lutyens (1869-1944) Archiseek Ireland Architects of Ireland / Sir Edwin Lutyens Sir Edwin Lutyens (1869-1944) was one of the most important english architects of the early twentieth century. He was responsible for some outstanding domestic commission in England but his most important work was in India where he was responsible for the layout and planning of New Delhi. His most important building there was the Viceroy's residence (1912-1931). After the First World War, he was responsible for many war memorials, including the Cenotaph in Whitehall, London, and the Memorial to the Missing of the Somme at Thiepval in France. In Ireland, he designed the Islandbridge War Memorial in Dublin, as well as Howth and Lambay Castles in County Dublin. While in Ireland, Lutyens was involved with Hugh Lane's proposal to build a Gallery of Modern Art in Dublin. Several suggested designs were produced, including a colonnaded building on St Stephen's Green opposite the Royal College of Surgeons. The most controversial design was a suggested 'bridge gallery' over the Liffey. This aroused much criticism, mostly from the Irish architectural journals complaining on the choice of a 'foreign' architect - even though Lutyen's mother was Irish. This design took the form of two pavilions at either end with a columned pergola between over a three arched bridge. Eventually the idea foundered when Lane died in the sinking of the Lusitania. After the Great War, his most important commissions in England were the Midland Bank, Poultry (1924-37) and the Catholic Cathedral, Liverpool which was only completed to crypt level.

The Galleries and Forum building at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts has the distinction of being the first major architectural commission in the United States for architect Fumihiko Maki, recipient of the 1993 Pritzker Prize. A contemporary two-story building of metal, glass and stone, Maki's design includes three galleries, a multi-use Forum, film and video theater, and administrative offices.
Fumihiko Maki, 65, was educated at the University of Tokyo, Cranbrook Academy of Art, and the Harvard Graduate School of Design, where he later served as Associate Professor. Maki has a distinguished international reputation as one of Japan's leading architects, where his projects include the Spiral, Fujisawa Metropolitan Gymnasium, and Tepia Science Pavilion in Tokyo; the Iwasaki Art Museum, Ibusuki City, Kagoshima; Nihon Convention Center, Makuhari, Chiba; and the National Museum of Modern Art in Kyoto. Famed for his designs for public buildings, Fumihiko Maki has received numerous international awards for architecture that reflects a deep commitment to the vitality of community life, while exploring the fragmented and complex nature of contemporary society. With an emphasis on public spaces and public use, Maki's structures often blur clear distinctions between the building's interior and the world outside its walls.
