Frank Lloyd Wright is considered the most influential American architect of the 20th century. His legacy is an architectural style that departed from European influences to create a purely American form, one that included the idea that buildings can be in harmony with the natural environment. Over his long career Wright designed a wide variety of structures, both public and private, including the home known as Fallingwater, the Johnson Wax Building and New York's Guggenheim Museum. Main About Us Weddings What We Offer ... Tour Information In April, 1940, Frank Lloyd Wright, world renowned architect, was commissioned to design a new building for the congregation after the burning of their building on Linwood Boulevard. Wright envisioned the entire property at 46 th and Main Streets being devoted to parking with the church building supported on graceful pillars, similar to the mushroom-shaped supports at the Johnson Wax Company office building in Racine, Wisconsin. Plans included a 1,000-seat auditorium with accommodations for a Sunday School of more than 700. Also included were a roof garden to be used for entertainment and other church functions, as well as a radical approach in construction of heating and cooling systems. Wright was considered a genius by some and was known for his complete departure from the ordinary. It was expected that the new church building would be no exception. The idea of air-conditioning for the building was met with much disfavor from Wright exclaiming "I’ve gotten more colds in so-called air-conditioned buildings than any other place." He went on to explain that the building he envisioned would be comfortably cool in the summer and warm in the winter using a floor heating and cooling system. Wright presented his finished plans to the pertinent departments of the church in June, 1940. Parking for 150 cars was allowed; construction of the building would be of steel and rose-tinted concrete. A green copper dome would sit above the chancel area. Wright claimed the building would be "fireproof, earthquake, and vermin-proof" and upkeep would be virtually nil. Wright also claimed that "it is no mere church building, but a new order dated 10 years ahead of its time."

Frank Lloyd Wright (1876-1959) was one of the best American Architects. Fallingwater is his masterpiece, "the most famous residence ever build" ; tne AIA ( American Institute of arhitects ) refers to Fallingwater as "the best all-time work ofAmerican architecture".
Designed and buil during 1934-1937 in Pnnsylvania, Fallingwater was a vacation house for the Kaufmann family: Edgar, Liliane and son Edgar Jr., owners of a department store in Pittsburgh.
Fallingwater house and contents were entrusted to the Western Pensylvania Conservancy in 1963 and is, today, a house - museum and U.S. monument.
Fallingwater is a synthesis of "organic architecture"; it integrates man with nature, as Wright taught to his students at his Taliesen Studio. Fallingwater was constructed of sandstone quarried on the property and was built by local craftsmen. It follows the concept of integrating environmental factors, function, native materials, construction process and humans (the client).

Email should be sent to franklloydwright@storrer.com SAD NEWS . S.005 and S.006B, the Louis Sullivan properties in Ocean Springs, MS, were totally destroyed by hurricane Katrina 28 August 2005. The James Charnley Bungalow, S.007, was gutted by the storm, with much of the structure moved 3 to 4 feet from its foundation. This revealed wood that was riddled with termites. Tho there is a claim that the building can be rebuilt, the cost would be in the millions, and it would largely be a new, not a restored, structure. The Guesthouse section, S.008A, of that building was largely destroyed, while the addition, not by Wright nor Sullivan, was damaged. Are you traveling the U S of A soon? If so, you may want to get maps updated with Interstate numbering of roadway exits now being used on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, Phoenix's loop highways, and California's interstates.

Two reviews, the first by Frank Laraway, former Taliesin Apprentice, then by William Allin Storrer, PhD Re: Ken Burns Public TV Work on The Life of Frank Lloyd Wright TO THE LOYAL FRIENDS OF FLW AND ORGANIC ARCHITECTURE: by Taliesin Apprentice Frank Laraway Am I alone in my very negative reaction and assessment of Ken Burn's recent TV essay on the life and work of Frank Lloyd Wright? Did anyone else notice the general implication of the distortions, half truths and the back-handed put down (intentional or unintentional) of his life and work? Does anyone dare speak out against this highly touted but misleading video essay? Did it not insinuate that the significance of the many trials of his life, his faults, his failures, his immoralities, his times of poverty and woe, far exceeded his accomplishments and his philosophy of Organic Architecture? Did it not dwell on the personal, as opposed the The Idea, The Work and the quality and volume of his artful design? Did it not spend inordinate amounts of video time with interviews of people who historically or even currently, really never understood, much less favored his uniquely American Movement? Did it not vent the very esoteric, artistic philosophy and rhetoric which has dominated American art and architectural criticism in opposition to Wright and his Organic Architecture since he and it began? The particular selections of the various periods of his life, the dreary black and white views of old work, the unfortunate old photos of him, rerun -TV shots of his aged face, all gave the public a most negative impression of the man himself. The editorial obsession with his amorous affairs, marriages, divorces, his personal mistakes, his financial woes, his proclivity for debt and living beyond his means, his leaking roofs, all gave the general impression that they literally dominated his life and work.

Architect AIA STUDYING PERSONALLY WITH FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT By Robert M. Green Architect AIA I am from Savannah, Georgia originally. I moved to Atlanta when fourteen and started at Georgia Tech at seventeen, already knowing that I wanted to be an architect, yet knowing nothing about architecture. In the library of the School of Architecture I discovered books containing pictures of the buildings of Frank Lloyd Wright. They were a revelation to me: houses low, long, tying into the ground, beautiful in proportion, fascinating in plan and space. At that time at Georgia Tech, the favorite of the styles among the professors was the all glass buildings of Mies van de Rohe. The professors tended to force the students into copying that man's stark, modern buildings. I liked the naturalness of Mr Wright's better. After two years at Tech, I joined the U.S. Marines; for at that time men my age had the "two year obligation." I joined to satisfy that requirement, and to get the G.I. Bill, which would allow me to attend college where I wanted: California preferably.

    Frank Lloyd Wright Architecture
    Design Style by Robert Green
Architect AIA Taliesin West Frank Lloyd Wright was ninety years old when I arrived. In the mornings he would slowly walk around the camp (Taliesin was a winter camp in the desert) talking with his students, watching the work going on, and designing new projects in his mind as he did so. Afternoons he spent in the drafting room, looking over the drawings which had been done and sketching in changes he thought were needed. He had an early supper and usually was in bed by 7 p.m., to preserve what energy he had. When I arrived, there were about eighty people there, counting Mr and Mrs Wright, their daughter, Iovanna, son-in-law Wesley Peters, who had been married to their other daughter, Olgivanna (a lovely woman, I heard, who had been killed in a car accident); also there were men and women who had been with the Wrights for many years, and their children; plus all the newer apprentices and their wives, if they had any. The Wrights and the people who had been there for years all lived in permanent quarters; the newer people, like myself, lived in tents out in the desert, away from camp. We were to spend the six winter months there at Taliesin West, the summer months at Mr Wright's home and farm back in Spring Green, Wisconsin, where we studied architecture and grew our own food.

Lloyd Wright [Frank Lloyd Wright Jr.] (1890-1978)
Being the eldest son of the greatest architect in America, Lloyd Wright would have been destined to become a mere footnote in the history of building. That he turned himself into a true artist of architecture with an independent approach to the craft speaks highly of his character in the face of such a situation. Born to Catherine and Frank Lloyd Wright in 1890, Frank Jr. was subjected from an early age to the olympian ego and emotional upheavals inflicted by his father. Yet the two worked together on several projects beginning with the Wasmuth Portfolio of 1910. Lloyd (as he preferred to be called) was such a gifted draftsman at 19 that his father entrusted him with many of the renderings of his great prairie houses included in the Berlin portfolio. Occurring at the time the elder Wright had walked out on his wife and children to live openly with the wife of his latest client, this became just one of many tests of loyalty to his father. Acrimonious letters between them over the years mark the constant dysfunction of their relationship, yet Lloyd never resented his father¹s pantheonic place in architecture. Lloyd attended the University of Wisconsin even longer than his father had before dropping out. His first attempt at an independent career led him to Boston and the landscaping firm of Olmsted and Olmsted. Specializing in botany and horticulture, he continued to pursue the interrelation of landscape to building throughout his life. In fact, few western architects, including his father, had such an abiding insight into how a building interfaces with nature.

Frank Lloyd Wright: Architect of the Century Wright's 1910 Wasmuth Portfolio lithographs, the only monograph by America's greatest architect.
Forty years after his death, Frank Lloyd Wright continues to be recognized as the most influential architect of the Twentieth Century. The prolific Wright was an accomplished draftsman at 20 and an established architect by 26. But it was in 1910, at the age of 43, that Wright achieved true international fame with the German publication of his monograph, The Wasmuth Portfolio . The Wasmuth lithographs brought Wright's distinctive Prairie Style to the attention of European modernists Walter Gropius, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Le Corbusier, then starting their careers. Today the Wasmuth Portfolio remains a cornerstone of American modernism. Beginning Friday, October 1st, ArchiTech presents an exhibition and sale of original drawings and photographs by Frank Lloyd Wright and Wasmuth Portfolio lithographs featuring the Larkin Building, the Avery Coonley House and his gigantic Wolf Lake entertainment pavilion. Included are Wasmuth prints of various buildings for Oak Park, River Forest and the North Shore.
