Pre 25,000 BC
The discovery of the first stone arrowheads in Africa tends to indicate that the bow and arrow were invented there, maybe as early as 50,000 BC. It was probably developed in conjunction with the invention of the spear thrower. A short bow would be a better hunting weapon when used to stalk animals in wooded areas, rather than carry around long spears. The shape of the earliest bows can only be guessed at, as broken or worn out bows would probably end up on the cooking fire , reshaped into different tools or just thrown away. Back to Top

Fire hardened points used on the arrows. Flint arrowheads shaped to a point and inserted into a slot and tied with sinew to the front of the arrow. Feathers were glued and tied with sinew to the arrow shafts. Back to Top

Licensed Outfitter And Guide Thank you for your interest in our service. We hope this letter will answer your questions about what we provide and tell you a little something about us. We encourage you to research the outfitter of your choice thoroughly to ensure getting the hunt you prefer. We provide top quality hunts in both Montana and Unit 4 of the Idaho panhandle. We work hard for you as we realize how important hunting is to you. We are dedicated to doing the very best job possible. Success is what we strive for in every aspect of the hunt. All of our hunts are designed to be trophy hunts. There is no "extra charge" for this; it is simply a standard we've set. We also feel that your luck plays a lot in hunting. If you happen to get lucky and kill the biggest bull in the woods, we don't feel we should "cash in" on it. After all, you've already paid us to take you hunting. One of the keys to a successful hunt lies due in great part to preparation. I've been involved in the outfitting business all of my life. I have also lived here in these rugged mountains all of my life. This country is vast, with an abundance of game and good cover for the game. I spend most of my time in the mountains, and not just my spare time. This is what I do for a living. I know the country, the game, it's habits and it's habitat. My guides have undergone my personal training in addition to the training they have received in guide schools they have attended. They are familiar with the area and are experienced in the field. They are also dedicated young men who give 100%.

    Beginnings
Archaeologists suspect that archery may have begun up to 15,000 years ago, but the earliest concrete evidence is between 8,000 and 9,000 years old. The bow probably originated for use in hunting , and was then adopted as a tool of warfare . Bows eventually replaced the atlatl as the predominant means for launching projectiles. Archery was practised in antiquity on every inhabited continent except Australia, demonstrating that it is both basic and versatile. edit
    Classical archery
Classical civilizations, notably the Greeks Parthians , and Chinese , fielded large numbers of archers in their armies. Arrows proved exceptionally destructive against massed formations, and the use of archers often proved decisive. Archers sometimes rode on horseback, combining range with speed. Apollo Odysseus , and other mythological characters are often depicted with a bow.
