42nd World Archery Championships Finals To Hit Central Park As previously announced, more than 500 archers from at least 60 countries will compete in the qualification and elimination rounds in Van Cortlandt Park's Parade Grounds in the Bronx from July 14-18. Additionally, as an Olympic qualifier, forty-six individuals and the top eight teams in these World Championships will win positions for their countries in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. "I am thrilled that the finals of archery's premier event for 2003 will be held in such a prominent location as Central Park," said Jim Easton, the President of FITA. "It is a great credit to the New York City officials and the 2003 World Championships Organizing Committee that we are able to bring this outstanding event to one of the world's premier outdoor venues. We promote archery as a sport for everyone and the atmosphere created by the archers and crowds should be something very special." Reigning Olympic and world champions are expected to compete and the public is invited to attend both the qualifying and final rounds free of charge. The opening ceremonies will be held in Van Cortlandt Park on July 14. Central Park, designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux in 1853 and one of the most massive public works in the city's history, is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year.

Australia bundled out of archery team competition
Last Updated: Saturday, August 21, 2004. 9:37pm (AEST) Australia has been bundled out in the quarter-final stages of the men's archery team competition at the Athens Olympics. A stray six-point arrow by 2000 individual gold medallist Simon Fairweather cost Australia dearly in their quarter-final against Taiwan. Twenty-six of the Taiwanese arrows hit the golden centre of the target for scores of nine or better in their 250-247 victory. "We have reached a high level and I believe that our team is the best in the world,"
Taiwanese coach Lin Sheng-hsien said. South Korea's trio of record breaking archers, who crashed out of the men's individual competition without a medal, made a nervous start to the defence of their title. The Koreans were on course for comfortable victory in their 27-arrow quarter-final against the Netherlands at the 19th century Panathinaiko Stadium, but nearly threw away the match with a careless last shot. With a four-point cushion, their most experienced archer Park Kyung-mo fired a seven-pointer for a 250-249 victory.

The Olympic Sport of Edgecrafting
I am not planning on watching much of the Athens Olympics televised by NBC. Why not? Well, NBC’s coverage of the major sports and Olympic events like Gymnastics, Swimming, Basketball, and the Opening/Closing ceremonies is too sanitized, too slick, too expected, and too commoditized (i.e. lowest common denominator) for me. However, I do plan to watch the “edgecraft” sports being televised on Bravo, CNBC, MSNBC, and USA cable channels. Televising uncommon but common sports like Badminton, Table Tennis, Field Hockey, Water Polo, and Archery is classic Seth Godin Edgecrafting SETH GODIN EDGECRAFTING REFRESHER COURSE
As detailed in Free Prize Inside , Edgecrafting is about going to the “edges” to find innovation. On the outer edges, one finds the out-of-the-ordinary which can be deemed extreme, offbeat, captivating, and downright remarkable. These remarkable goings-on may be far from being mainstream, but they are definitely worthy of talking about. And discovering talk value is where edgecrafting crafts Free Prizes.

With medal fever gripping the globe and Sports Day (Oct 9) right around the corner, Melanie C. Redmond and Matt Wilce track down some Olympic sports you can try in Tokyo.
Citius, altius, fortius: Faster, higher, stronger
Traditionally each time the Olympics come around they are lauded as "the biggest and best yet." While opinions may vary about it being the best, there' no doubt about its growth as every four years more events are added to the Olympic family. Some, like tennis, are old friends making a return to the fold, while others are first-timers like trampolining. Each year, more sports vie for Olympic recognition golf, rugby, snooker and even ballroom dancing but as sports addicts will testify, there is plenty to keep armchair Olympians busy right now. But if vegetating in front of the telly is taking its toll, read on. TC 's got the goods on some of the more off-beat Olympic sports and tracked down some spots in Tokyo where potential Gold Medalists can give them a try.

Trampoline
Making its debut at the Sydney Games, trampoline gymnastics traces its history back a couple of hundred years to the icy expanses of Alaska. Originally pioneered by Comanche Indians, the trampoline has evolved from stretched walrus skins of the mid 19th century to the modern springy version first used in the circus. Russia is likely to top the medal table, although rival Great Britain hopes to consolidate its four previous World Championship wins. France and Belarus also stand a good chance of returning home with medals.

The Alternative Olympics
Every summer, the hardships and food shortages are forgotten as Mongolian nomads wandering one of the world's harshest environments all merrily congregate for the annual celebration of the Three Manly Sports
By Ron Gluckman / Mongolia D UST SWIRLS LIKE BROWN CYCLONES across the grassland in the distance, long before the riders break the horizon. Then, the ground heaves to the pounding of hundreds of hoofs, as horses surge for miles across the steppes. The race course is a rainbow of color. Banners fly from carnival booths. Horse manes are pinned punk-style, with ribbons. Reins are studded with shiny silver. And riders in the world's largest horse race are wrapped in embroidered robes of blue, orange and magenta. In the barren plains of Mongolia, where winters are ferocious, food is scarce and one can roam the range for days without seeing a sign of human settlement, there would seem to be no better test of mettle than simple survival. However, thousands of hearty descendants of Genghis Kahn compete in shows of skill and strength every summer at Naadam, a sports festival rivaling the Olympics as the Earth's oldest games. Long ago, this was what constituted civilization: wrestling, horse riding and archery. Mongols maintain that their "Three Manly Sports" separate the real men from the boys.

Archery in Scotland
The Scottish Archery Association (SAA) is affiliated to the national governing body, the Grand National Archery Society (GNAS). We are also associated to the Scottish Sports Association and SportScotland. There are about 50 clubs throughout the whole of Scotland, serving the most densely populated areas. The SAA and its clubs are run by volunteers - we have no paid staff. Most clubs offer target archery. However there may also be facilities to enable you to take part in field archery. Archery is an Olympic sport, with a Scottish archer having taken part in the Sydney Olympic Games. If, however, you are looking for a recreation or hobby, then local archery clubs will provide that facility.
Getting Started
Contact the Regional secretary of the SAA to find out where your local club is located. Then simply arrange to go along to the club, where you will attend a beginner's course. You will be given in-depth instruction and coaching during your course, covering the basic techniques of archery, including safety, to ensure that you gain the maximum enjoyment from the very start. All equipment will be provided by the club, so you won't need to supply anything. At the end of your beginner's course (4-6 weeks) you will be invited to join the club, and affiliate to the SAA.

Demonstration showing two options for implementing Website accessibility guidelines in the menu of sports
By Tom Worthington
http://www.tomw.net.au/2000/sports.html The purpose of this document is to demonstrate methods for implementing Website accessibility guidelines for the Olympic games web site . Specifically methods to provide a text alternative for the menu of sports is shown.
Option 1: ALT Text on the existing image map
In this implementation, a ALT tag with the name of the sport is added to each rectangular region of the existing image map. As an example, alt="Archery" is added to the first area: < AREA shape="rect" coords="1,1,80,12" href=http://www.olympics.com/eng/sports/AR/home.html" alt="Archery" There is no change in the appearance of the menu for most users. However, the effect of including the ALT tags is that a browser can display the text labels in place of the graphics, if required:
Option 2: Simple text menu supplementing or replacing the existing image map
Simple hypertext links are used for the name of each sport: Archery These instructions could be used in a simple list of sports, or in a table as show below. The list has been changed to run alphabetically across the columns, rather than down, to aid braille readers (which read one line of horizontal text at a time). The colour of the table background and text can be changed to match that of the current graphic. However, those colours may be difficult for some people to read:
