The circular target has a series of ten concentric rings around a solid gold center, or "bull's-eye." Ranging outward from the bull's eye, the colors of the rings are red, blue, black, and white. The rings are assigned point values for arrows shot into them ranging from 10 for a bull's-eye to 1 point for an arrow in the outer white ring. Striking the target dead-center is somewhat like standing on the goal line of a football field and hitting an apple under the opposite goal post. Competition
Men and women compete in separate divisions, and the top 64 men and 64 women from the qualifying rounds then enter head to head direct elimination matches. The winner of each match advances until the gold medal winner is determined. Matches use 18 arrows until the quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals, which are 12-arrow matches. Archers can propel arrows at speeds of more than 150 miles per hour.

INDIA IN OLYMPIC 2004 Athens: Double trap shooter Rajyavardhan Rathore is world No. 3, long jumper Anju George and tennis player Mahesh Bhupathi No. 5 and shooter Anjali Bhagwat No.6... Now, if only rankings could assure medals. In the past few weeks, these three and other Indian medal hopes have converged on sports pages of the ToI presenting a picture of optimism. But to even open the door to the pantheon of Olympic greats — Indian and international — they will have to slug it out in a gloriously competitive arena. Unlike previous years there is one consolation. Each of the 75 Indians in Athens has earned the right to be there.
Yes, there are a few lucky ones, like sailing wild card entrants Malav Shroff and Sumeet Patel, or others who got in because others pulled-out. As usual, there is expectation of a few medals. Indian Olympic Association president Suresh Kalmadi feels: “a few are on the cards’’.
The great Milkha Singh, not one to mince words, has a contrasting view. Somewhere in between lies the truth.
And that is independent India has produced only three individual bronze medals — K D Jadhav in Helsinki 1952, Leander Paes in Atlanta 1996 and Karnam Malleswari in Sydney 2000 —apart from the golden era of hockey in the 50s and 60s. Hockey, which has made news for off-field skirmishes, has been on the wane and after 1980, when we won our last gold in a depleted field in Moscow, a fifth place at Los Angeles has been the best showing.

As legend has it, Robin Hood once won an archery contest by splitting the arrow of a competitor with his own arrow. That act is still known as a "Robin Hood."
Historians suggest that people were using a bow and arrow as far back as 25,000 years ago. Where it was once used as a weapon of war, the arrow is now primarily used for hunting and for archery.

    Beginnings
Archaeologists suspect that archery may have begun up to 15,000 years ago, but the earliest concrete evidence is between 8,000 and 9,000 years old. The bow probably originated for use in hunting , and was then adopted as a tool of warfare . Bows eventually replaced the atlatl as the predominant means for launching projectiles. Archery was practised in antiquity on every inhabited continent except Australia, demonstrating that it is both basic and versatile. edit
    Classical archery
Classical civilizations, notably the Greeks Parthians , and Chinese , fielded large numbers of archers in their armies. Arrows proved exceptionally destructive against massed formations, and the use of archers often proved decisive. Archers sometimes rode on horseback, combining range with speed. Apollo Odysseus , and other mythological characters are often depicted with a bow.

By far, the greatest number of archers choose to shoot recurve bows, the modern version of the traditional Longbow. Rapid technological developments over the last few years have led to an increasing popularity with the 'compound' bow, distinguished by its much shorter length, pulley wheels, cables and telescopic sights.
The GNAS also recognises Crossbow Archery, which has become a distinctive, specialist discipline with its own rules and objectives.
Although wooden arrows are still shot by some archers, usually those who shoot the traditional longbow most arrows are produced from aluminium, carbon or a combination of both. They are extremely light and vary considerably in price depending on their toughness or durability.
Tournaments
Numerous outdoor and Indoor tournaments throughout the year are an important part of the sport for those of a more competitive nature. Nevertheless club and recreational archery is just as Important for people who find they have little time for any serious commitment, though still enjoy 'shooting arrows' with friends, family or colleagues in the familiar surroundings of their club.
Archery is also one of the few sports that is enjoyed with few compromises by people with most types of disability. Special guidance and instruction is available, even for the visually impaired. It is not uncommon to see disabled archers sometimes in wheelchairs, shooting alongside their able bodied friends on the same tournament shooting line.

Archery in Olympics Archery first appeared in the Olympic Games in 1900 and was contested again in 1904, 1908, and 1920. In those four Games it was possible for an archer to compete in numerous events and win several medals. Hubert van Innis from Belgium is the most decorated archer in Olympic history, winning six gold medals and three silvers in 1900 and 1920. Archery was re-introduced to the Olympic program in 1972 with an individual event for men and for women in which the Americans John Williams and Doreen Wilber of the USA captured the gold medals. In Seoul 1988, the team competition was added to the medal program. ATLANTA 1996 Never before have so many spectators been able to watch archery live on television as in Atlanta, USA, in 1996:

Archery first appeared as a sport in the 1900 Olympics Games in Paris and was held at the Games of 1904, 1908 and 1920. However, international rules had not yet been developed and each host country used its own format. As a result, archery events in these early Olympic Games varied widely. Because of the lack of uniform international rules archery was then dropped from the Olympic Games. The Federation Internationale de Tir a l'Arc (FITA), the international governing body of the sport, was founded in 1931 and implemented standardized rules for competition. It allowed the first World Championship to be held that same year. After countries adopted the new rules, archery returned to the 1972 Games in Munich. Initially, only individual competition took place - the team competition was added in 1988.

History
According to Greek history, Archery emerged as a sport even in ancient times. Humankind’s first composite mechanical invention was how to use a bow and arrow. Ancient people regarded Archery as an art, no different from music or other arts. Greek mythology is full of references to Olympian gods and heroes who were recorded in history as great archers. It is well known that the goddess of hunting, Artemis, and her brother Apollo, the god of light and the arts, made use of bows; the two are conventionally portrayed as carrying arrows and quivers. Hercules is an example of an archer hero: he had been taught how to use the bow by a native of Scythia, Teutaros, and had been initiated into the art of Archery by Rhadamanthys. Another case in point is Poias, a member of the Argonaut expedition, who inherited Hercules’s bow and arrows and in turn handed them down to his son Philoctetes - another celebrated archer and the ruler of Thessaly. These weapons were instrumental in the fall of Troy. Ulysses, too, upon returning to his palace after many years of adventures, confronted Penelope’s suitors in a grand archery competiition – an event elaborately portrayed in the Homeric Iliad and Odyssey. Other famous archers in the Trojan War were Pandarus and Paris, of the Trojans, and Teucer and Ulysses, of a coalition of other hellenic cities.

  • Hundreds of years ago, around 1046, England was conquered by Denmark and occupied by the Danish. The English finally forced them out after many bloody battles. A few years later, an English boy was walking through an old battleground. He uncovered a Danish skull left over from England's war with Denmark and started kicking it around. A couple other boys joined him. But some of them hurt their feet on the skull, so they decided to use an inflated cow bladder. Other sources show that it led to soccer and rugby. In 1146, grown men were playing football. Sometimes there were more than one hundred players on the same team. Instead of helmets players grew their hair longer to protect their skulls from severe injuries. Rugby, starting as a part of football, was developed by William Webb Ellias in 1823 in college. Players were ordered not to play in town but in vacant fields because the sport was so violent. They established some rules and they agreed that both teams should have the same number of players, though usually the teams still had more than fifty players on a team.
