Many ancient cultures regarded archery as an art, much like music or poetry, and it figures repeatedly in Roman and Greek mythology. It was also used by Native Americans and throughout Asia, as well as by Attila the Hun in his conquest of much of Europe and Asia. In time, archery became a popular leisure pursuit and England's King Henry VIII founded the first club - the Brotherhood of St. George - in 1537. The first recorded contest of recent times was in London in 1583, and the first international competition was held between English and French archers in 1900. It was in the same year that archery became an Olympic sport, featuring every year until 1920, with the exception of Stockholm in 1912. The era was dominated by Belgium's Hubert van Innis who won a record six golds and three silvers before bowing out in Antwerp in 1920 at the age of 54.

Athlete eligibility and classification

Paralympic competition is limited to athletes with cerebral palsy, spinal injuries and other lower limb impairments, and les autres conditions; however, athletes with other disabilities also enjoy archery.
Archers in the Paralympic Games compete in wheechair and standing classifications.
Playing area
The playing field is designed similar to competitions for "able-bodied" athletes. The target is a distance of 294 feet (90 meters) away from archer. The maximum target size is 48 inches in diameter (122 centimeters). The target is divided into ten (10) concentric rings with a golden "bulls eye" or center ring. Rules The rules and scoring protocol are the same as those utilized in the Olympic games. Points are earned for each arrow striking the target. Archers score ten points if he/she hits the bulls eye and one point if they hit the outer ring. The closer the archer's arrow lands to the bulls eye, the more points earned. Equipment Sport-specific equipment . Paralympic athletes use a recurve bow. Recurves are made of wood, graphite, fiberglass, or carbon composites. Arrows are either carbon graphite or aluminum.

Règlements Qualifying for the 2000 Olympics The process for qualifying for the 2000 Olympics in Sydney Australia is very similar to the process used in 1996. Only those shooting recurve bows are eligible for the Olympic Games and only those shooting recurve bows can earn Olympic places through the qualifying process. There are three sets of criteria Canadian archers must meet:
Criteria set by COA (Canadian Olympic Association)
Criteria set by the FCA (Federation of Canadian Archers) FITA Criteria
The IOC (International Olympic Committee) has put a cap on the number of athletes and officials at the Olympic Games of 10,000 athletes and 5,000 officials. As a result, all sports have had to reduce their numbers of competitors. Archery is allowed 64 men and 64 women. FITA has developed a system to determine which countries can send athletes to fill these 128 places. The maximum number of competitors per country at the Olympic Games is 3 men and 3 women. The 64 places for men and women are allocated as follows:
43 places from the 1999 World Championships
3 places go the host country of the Olympic Games
3 places are kept by FITA and distributed as "wild cards" As well, all members of the top 8 teams at the 1999 World Championships will earn places for their countries, even if a member of the team does not finish in the top 43.

Athletics: McLean continues fairytale
Brought to you by the Evening Echo THERE were outstanding performances from a host of local athletes as Essex boys and girls joined forces to claim the under-15 championship trophy with 104 points at at the South of England inter-counties match at Abingdon. The match was held jointly with the under-20 age group and Southend AC's Greensward College, Hockley, hurdler James McLean played a starring role in the success. His achievements continue to read like a fairytale. James travelled back from a family holiday in Cornwall the day before the event, hadn't run or trained for two weeks, got up early on the morning of the match to travel to Abingdon, and then smashed the championship best with 10.88s in the first heat of the 80m hurdles. Although it was wind assisted it was an amazing time. Just to prove it was no fluke he won the final in 11.10 - again inside the old championship best. McLean obviously enjoys this match and venue as last year he recorded the fastest ever time as a 13-year-old.
