Archery
How do they shoot?
At the Olympics we saw archery for the first time in 1900 (then 6 parts big). They use the continental manner, each marksman shoot one arrow (if you use the British manner you shoot three arrows per time).
American party
In 1904 there was again a discussion about something, was it right or not. In 1904 all participants were Americans, so some people thought that it may not named as a part of the Olympics.
Where are they?
If you was waiting for archery in 1912, you could wait long, because in 1912 archery wasn't a part of the Olympics. But at the next Olympics, in 1920 (in connection with the first World War in 1916), there was an enormous interest for archery, so there were 10 parts of archery. Indeed only the Belgium manner, and many countries don't like that way of shooting, so the only participating countries were France, the Netherlands and Belgium. After that, archery was struck out of the list of Olympic sports.
Arrow here, arrow there
In 1972 re-entered archery the Olympics. But with other parts. The men had to shoot with 144 arrows, at distances of 90m, 70m, 50m and 30m (per part 36 arrows). Woman had to shoot the same numbers at 70m, 60m, 50m and 30m. Since 1988 there are competitions for teams for a title (and the gold medal). Archery Diving Hockey Shooting Track-and-field ... The question of how many sports are included in the Olympics is a bit tricky, because the International Olympic Committee doesn't define a sport in quite the same way that most people do. The IOC recognizes a hierarchy of sports, disciplines, and events. To the IOC, a sport is represented by a single international governing body. To look at a concrete example, most people would say that swimming, diving, synchronised swimming, and water polo are four separate sports. However, the international governing body for all three is the Federation Internationale de Natation. In Olympic terms, therefore, the sport is aquatics. Swimming, diving, synchronized swimming, and water polo are aquatics disciplines. An event, in Olympic terms, is any competition for which medals are awarded. So men's platform diving is an event, diving is the discipline, and aquatics is the sport. It should be noted that, for many sports, the sport is also the discipline. That's true, for example, of badminton, baseball, and basketball. It's not true of archery, though; the sport is archery and the discipline is target archery. Target archery happens to be the only archery discipline included in the Olympics, but the International Archery Federation also governs competition in field archery and ski archery, which are considered separate disciplines.

Olympic Medalists: Archery
History
Various kinds of archery competition were on the Olympic program from 1900 through 1920. The exact type of competition depended on the host country. England, in 1900, and the United States, in 1908, favored target archery. Countries on the European continent, though, favored more exotic kinds of competition, usually more closely associated with hunting. After 1920, the International Olympic Committee took control of medal sports and archery was dropped because there were no standardized international rules. An international governing body was finally organized in 1931 to standardize rules and oversee competition, but target archery wasn't restored to the Olympics until 1972. From 1972 through 1988, standings were based on cumulative scores. Since 1992, competition has been based on a single-elimination tournament. The scores shown for those Olympics are for the gold medal contest between two archers. Top of page

Archery

Archers use bows to fire arrows at targets a long distance away from them. The bows and arrows are really hi-tech now, but archers still need to be very strong to use them. They are aiming to land their arrow in a tiny bullseye just 12cm wide, on a target 70m away from them. Who are the British hopes for Athens?
The women's team will be chasing a medal, as they finished third at the World Championships in 2003. Two members of that team, Alison Williamson and Helen Palmer, are in the British squad for the Athens Games. Only one male archer, Larry Godfrey, will be representing Great Britain at the Games. Who are the big names?
In the women's events the South Korean archers are the top names, having won individual gold in the last five Olympics and team gold in the last four. The USA is also likely to send a very strong archery team to Athens. Fancy a go at archery? Click here to find out how to get started
