Cuddihy was the youngest member of the three-man Australian archery team that competed in Athens. Tim and fellow team-mate David Barnes represent a promising future for Australian archery.
The 22-year-old confirmed his reputation as the fastest man on wheels when he won every round of the keirin. In the sprint event, Ryan produced an electrifying come-from-behind victory over world champion Theo Bos to claim gold. Ryan downed the flying Dutchman with an exhilarating final-lap surge to catch him metres before the finish line.

Archery is a thrilling sport that is growing in popularity. Anyone can participate, man, woman or child. To be successful as an athlete in this sport requires years of practice and development of both mental and physical skills. Archers develop techniques to fully control their body movement, their endurance and their mental steadiness, when preparing to meet the challenge of match days.
Description
See the Olympic sports animations  The Olympic Archery competition takes place outdoors, in four categories of events: Individual events, men’s and women’s Team events, men’s and women’s Competitors shoot standing, aiming to land their arrow in the smallest (the central) circle, 12 cm in diameter, on a target face 122 cm in diameter, placed 70 m away. The target consists of ten coloured concentric circles known as ‘rings’. An arrow in the innermost circle (the ‘bull’s eye’) is worth ten points, and an arrow in the outermost circle (the ‘outer’) counts for one. An arrow landing successfully in a ring between these two is worth from two to nine points, depending which one it is.

The circular target has a series of ten concentric rings around a solid gold center, or "bull's-eye." Ranging outward from the bull's eye, the colors of the rings are red, blue, black, and white. The rings are assigned point values for arrows shot into them ranging from 10 for a bull's-eye to 1 point for an arrow in the outer white ring. Striking the target dead-center is somewhat like standing on the goal line of a football field and hitting an apple under the opposite goal post. Competition
Men and women compete in separate divisions, and the top 64 men and 64 women from the qualifying rounds then enter head to head direct elimination matches. The winner of each match advances until the gold medal winner is determined. Matches use 18 arrows until the quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals, which are 12-arrow matches. Archers can propel arrows at speeds of more than 150 miles per hour.

The Olympic Games:
Summer 2004 in Athens, Greece

Athens, Greece, will host the 2004 Summer Olympics. For information on Greece, click here . For a page on Greece's flag, click here The Games of the XXVIII Olympiad are being held in Athens, Greece. The opening ceremonies are on August 13, 2004. The closing ceremonies are on Sunday, August 29, 2004. The Ancient Olympics The ancient Greeks dedicated the Olympic Games to the god Zeus. The original games were held on the plain of Olympia in Peloponnesos, Greece. The Greeks held the first Olympic games in the year 776 BC (over 2700 years ago), and had only one event, a sprint (a short run that was called the "stade"). The race was run by men who competed in the nude. A wreath of olive branches was placed on the winner's head (in Greek, this is called a kotinos). The olive tree was the sacred tree of Athens, Greece. Women were neither allowed to compete in the games nor to watch them, because the games were dedicated to Zeus and were therefore meant for men.

Olympics Provide Special Moments
Five Great Achievements Stand Out
By Kim Hyun-cheol
Staff Reporter As the biggest event in all of sport, the Olympics have offered plenty of thrilling and dramatic moments for spectators and participants alike. Surely that it is one of the great draws of the Summer Games. However, among all the glorious instants, there are some that stand out as particularly special in the minds of South Koreans. These are the five most impressive sporting achievements in South Korea¡¯s Olympic history as selected by the sports desk of The Korea Times. Hwang Young-cho - Marathon 1992 Barcelona Olympics The 1996 Barcelona Olympics are unforgettable for South Koreans in two ways. First, it was the only Games where the first and the last gold medal went to South Korea, and second, it was South Korea¡¯s Hwang Young-cho who won the last gold medal of the Olympics in marathon to cap the greatest finish ever in our Olympic history. The first Korean to win a gold medal at the Olympics was Sohn Ki-chung at the 1936 Berlin Games but he ran under the flag of Japan as Korea was under its colonial power. While it is definitely something to be proud of it also left Koreans feeling like something was missing and many yearned for another marathoner to top the podium to relieve Sohn¡¯s grief. It was finally accomplished at Montjuic Stadium after a 56-year wait. The race itself was a thriller. Hwang, who was running just his just fourth full-course marathon at Barcelona, raced neck-and-neck with Japan¡¯s Koichi Morishita for the lead before the 40-kilometer point.

80. Archery – News Reports, Sydney Results, Ancient Origins, Olympic History, Atlan
FROM WEAPON OF WAR TO ROBIN HOOD AND THE olympic ARENA After Britain s cleansweep in London in 1908, archery was dropped from the Games.
http://www.times-olympics.co.uk/communities/archery/archeryancient.html
ANCIENT ORIGINS FROM WEAPON OF WAR TO ROBIN HOOD AND THE OLYMPIC ARENA
There has rarely been a clean-sweep like it in sport; in 1908, British women took the first 22 places in the archery competition at the Olympic Games in London. Truth be known, Britain was the only nation to field any female archers at that Games. Nonetheless, the hearts of Robin Hood and his Merry Men would surely have swelled with pride. For in a sport that has held competitions since medieval times and whose basic principles remain the same despite the advance of technology, the outlaw who lived in Sherwood Forest in the 12th Century is still honoured; a "Robin Hood" in the modern sport represents the splitting of the shaft of an arrow already in the target by another arrow, supposedly in recognition of the legendary Mr Hood's ability to do just that. The bow and arrow was used for hunting and as a weapon of war long before Robin Hood championed the poor in their struggle against the tax demands of the Sheriff of Nottingham. Their first recorded use appears in ancient Egyptian drawings that date back 5,000 years, though historians estimate that the invention of the bow and arrow goes back 25,000 years.
