    GENERAL TOOLS AWARD
2003 General Tools Award Winner - Alex Barbour Photograph by Perry Green Select on thumbnail photo above to enlarge Bob Passfield made the following presentation of the 2003 General Tools award at the SIA 2003 Annual Meeting:
"The Society for Industrial Archeology General Tools Award for Distinguished Service to Industrial Archeology recognizes individuals who have given sustained, distinguished service to the cause of industrial archeology. Nominations for the award may be made by any SIA member in good standing. The criteria for selection are as follows: the recipient must have given noteworthy service, over an extended period of time, to the cause of industrial archeology. The type of service is unspecified, but must be for other than academic publication. It is desirable, but not required, that the recipient be a member of the SIA. And finally, the award may be made only to a living individual.
"The General Tools Award was established in 1992 by Gerry Weinstein, Chairman of the General Tools Manufacturing Company, and is funded through an endowment created by the Abraham and Lillian Rosenberg Foundation. Before proceeding with the award, I would like to express my appreciation to the other members of the General Tools Award Committee, Betsy Fahlman and Pat Malone, for their substantial contributions to the evaluation process.
"This year’s recipient of the Society for Industrial Archeology’s General Tools Award has been involved with machinery and engineering all his life and is a hands-on practitioner of industrial archeology with a prodigious knowledge of machinery of all types. A millwright and mechanical engineer by profession, he has achieved a wide recognition for his expertise in machinery restoration, millwrighting, and marine engineering.

    Archeology
The high arid Colorado Plateau region of the American Southwest is world-renowned for its many well-preserved archeological resources. We may think first of bones or arrowheads, but archeological resources include a wide range of structures and objects - all the things used by past peoples in their daily lives. Archeologists study all these resources - from the smallest piece of pottery, to charcoal and food remains, to the rock and wood remains of large buildings - and the places where they are found, to learn more about the people who lived here and to connect their lives with ours. Through the findings of archeologists, people from times past can speak to us today. What did people eat? Did they hunt wildlife? Gather plants and berries? Grow crops? Did they weave cloth? Trade with others? How long did they live? Were they healthy? Modern archeologists use both shovels and high tech tools to answer questions like these. Sometimes there are glimpses, through the artifacts left behind, of how a society functioned, or what its people believed. It is up to all of us to preserve the archeological story. Each fragment, each stone structure is a unique piece of the past. Please leave them undisturbed.

General Information About The Maya Periods Pre-Classic Classic Post-Classic El Mundo Maya "The Mayan World"
The physical "boundaries" of the ancient Mayan empire spanned the countries of modern day Guatemala, Belize (once called British Honduras), El Salvador, Honduras and the five Mexican states of Yucatán, Quintana Roo, Tabasco, Campeche and Chiapas. This area is also known by the name 'Mesoamerica". The total area once occupied by the Maya was around 400,000-500,000 square kilometers in all, and is referred to collectively as El Mundo Maya or in Spanish "The Maya World One group, or tribe of Mayans called the Huaxtecs, separated in ancient times from the main groups and established itself outside of this main geographical area. There were 28 remaining ethnic groups whose names we have based on their languages, are the Yucatec, Itza, Lacandon, Mopan, Chorti, Chontal, Chol, Cholti, Tzotzil, Tzeltal, Coxoh, Tojolabal, Chuj, Jacaltec, Kanhobal, Mocho, Tuzantec, Mam, Aguacateca, Ixil, Quiche, Tzutuhil, Cakchiquel, Uspantec, Achi, Pocomam, Pocomchi and Kekchi. Though all these areas may have had differing languages, cultures and origins, they all shared certain characteristics that allow us to view them as a single culture. The topography of the Mayan landscape varies considerably. There are the volcanic mountains that are on the Pacific (western) coast of Mexico, all the way down to the tropical rainforest lowlands that make up the northern portion of the Yucatan. Western Guatamala and Chiapas made up the

Located about 1-1/2 hours east of Merida and 2 hours west of Cancun on Highway 180. Arguably the best known and most popular among all the Mexican ruins, the city itself is located just south of highway 180, 120 km East of Merida and 203 km west of Cancún, about midway between the two cities (about a two hour drive West from Cancun). Chichén Itzá is the modern day capital city of the state of Yucatan. Not all of the site is accessible to tourists. The Temple of the Warriors has now been deemed off limits as have portions of the Temple of the Jaguar connected to the Ball Court. These changes are necessitated by the continued erosion of the site due to time, acid rain, vandalism, and the fact that the city now sees almost three million visitors each year, equal in numbers to the Parthenon in Rome or Stonehenge on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, England. Interest in these sites is welcome for the money it brings into the country's local economy, but has ultimately added to the erosion of the sites themselves. It is the most completely restored archeological site in the Yucatan thanks to funding from the Carnegie institute and the efforts of scholar and adventurer Sylvanus Morley . Sylvanus spent twenty years of his life between 1924 and 1944 supervising the restoration efforts in the hopes of attracting visitors from all over the world and to help provide funds for other archeological digs in the area. Sylvanus Morley is also responsible in part for the first English translation of the Quiche Maya "Bible", the
