Indiana State Museum is offering a new workshop for students in grades 4-12, called Indiana Cultural History Mystery. Students become the archaeologist as they analyze artifacts left behind by various Native American cultures in Indiana's past to solve the puzzle: Who was here first? Reservations for the workshop can be made throughout the school year. In addition, Archeology Camp, geared for grades 5-8, is scheduled for June 9-11 and June 16-18. Campers will participate in a variety of activities, including a mapping puzzle, making pottery, and garbology. Campers will also have the opportunity to explore the museum's archaeology collections and, weather and project permitting, visit a working archaeology excavation. Both the workshop and camps will be help at the Indiana State Museum in Indianapolis. For more information visit the museum's web site at

Meet the Press NEW BOOK HELPS KIDS TO DIG ARCHAEOLOGY By Lisbeth Kent TRY your hand at Excavating a Florida Midden Other Press Releases GAINESVILLE— As the 7th annual Florida Archeology Month gets underway in March, University Press of Florida announces publication of a new book about the Timucua Indians that introduces young readers to their early native cousins. The Timucua Indians A Native American Detective Story , an illustrated and interactive book geared to readers from ages 7 to 12, explores the history and culture of 16th-century Florida. It includes 47 "detective directives" that invite kids to follow clues and conduct their own archaeological and investigative activities explore a trash midden, speak some of the Timucua language, plant a feast, or figure out how the Timucua hunted 25-foot alligators. When the mysteries are solved, the reader becomes a certified Historical Detective. Written by Kelley G. Weitzel, senior preserve naturalist at the E. Dale Joyner Nature Preserve at Pelotes Island in Jacksonville, the $9.95 paperback book is the first in UPF’s Young Readers Library publishing program.
Weitzel, who teaches workshops and seminars about Florida’s environment and its Native Americans, said recently the book allows young readers to "bring a little of the strength and wisdom of the ancient Timucua culture back to their present-day lives" and to enjoy the experience year around.

City Archaeology Program
Today, the Environment Department’s City Archaeologist manages the archaeological remains located on public land in Boston, and over 27 collections of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts held by the City. The City Archaeologist is also committed to public outreach and education in archaeology for Boston city schoolchildren and the public.
The City Archaeology Program offers a number of opportunities for the public to experience Boston’s archaeological legacy. The 4,000-square-foot City Archaeology Laboratory, Education, and Curation Center is located in the North End in the brick, gold-domed building between the entrance to the Callahan Tunnel and the exit of the Sumner Tunnel, just 200 feet west of the Freedom Trail. At present, the lab is open Monday through Friday by appointment, and on weekends for special events. During the last year, thousands of visitors toured the lab and viewed the collections. Other activities offered by the City Archaeology Program include a hands-on artifact type collection, an artifact washing and processing station, an experimental Native American ceramic workshop, a simulated dig box, and many other stations.
The City Archaeology Program is staffed entirely by volunteers. Many of these volunteers are Boston schoolchildren enlisted through their participation in archaeological workshops offered by the City Archaeology Program. Other volunteers include graduate students from local institutions, home-schoolers, teachers, interested citizens, and members of the Massachusetts Archaeological Society. Excavation opportunities in the Boston area allow volunteers to participate in digging at an archaeological site.

Mayans and Aztecs and Incas, oh, my! Kate Houston Mitchoff excavates rich sites on the great civilizations of Central and South America. (Pathfinders: guiding students to great sources).(internet) Author/s: Kate Houston Mitchoff
Issue: May, 2002 There never seem to be enough resources to satisfy the need for more materials on ancient civilizations. Encompassing mummies, ballgames, ritual sacrifice, astronomy, and a calendar, there are many elements of the pre-Columbian cultures of Central and South America to fascinate children and young adults alike. Luckily, the Internet is able to complement published materials on the subject. Several institutions supported expeditions to discover the treasures of these ancient civilizations, and many archaeologists have in turn published books about those experiences that make for a diverse collection of materials for students to explore. Some also have been converted into web sites. Most sites cover the basics of the civilizationsrulers, religion, artbut I have also included more specialized sites that focus on some aspect of special interest to kidsmummies and the calendar with its 13-day "weeks." This list includes sites about general archaeology for kids. Intermediate and middle school students may better understand the past civilizations by comprehending how people today have made discoveries and drawn conclusions about people of the past.

Archeological Resources for Educators
Resources Basics
Archeologists and educators are realizing that the study of archeology has great potential for motivating young people, instructing them in a wide variety of skills, and inspiring in them an appreciation for the importance of preserving our nonrenewable cultural heritage. Fortunately, an increasing number of good materials are being produced for teachers who want to incorporate archeology into multidisciplinary studies. This is the beginning of a list that the Public Archeologist is compiling. At present it includes a small selection of learning guides and supplementary resources that have been examined first-hand. Most of the works cited contain references to numerous additional sources. While some of the entries deal with archeological sites in other parts of the United States and the world, with a little effort and creativity, many of the suggested activities can be adapted to local situations. If you have used materials that were helpful in your classroom or group, please share this information with the Public Archeologist (Kansas State Historical Society, 6425 SW 6

Many times due to field trip restrictions, teachers are not able to bring students to Plains to learn about the Carters. The off site programs have been developed to give your students an opportunity to learn about our 39th President. New programs will be added during the year, so make sure you check this site often! Archeology Dig The Jimmy Carter National Historic Site Education Program has partnered with the Federal Highway Administration Georgia Division (FHWA) and the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) to co-sponsor a program to help kids better understand their history as told through archaeology. The goal of this unique partnership is not to teach kids how to be archaeologists, but rather to use archaeology as a tool to stimulate creativity and interest in learning about cultural heritage. The partnership is central to FHWA’s and GDOT’s vision and underpins the framework for giving back to local communities through environmental stewardship. Beginning in the spring of 2004, students in Sumter and Schley Counties, through the Jimmy Carter National Historic Site Education Program, will be provided a hands-on introduction to archaeology field methods and excavation on a FHWA and GDOT sponsored archaeology project in Sumter County fully supervised by professional archaeologists.

The Community Archaeology Program (CAP) at Binghamton University provides a professionally supervised opportunity for non-archaeologists to participate in excavations at nationally important sites. Each summer, sessions are held for community members and local educators. Both supervisors and participants benefit from the Community Archaeology Program.
Volunteers bring a range of skills and experiences that are integral to the program's success. In return for their hard work and enthusiasm, participants gain a greater appreciation for the history and prehistory of the region, as well as the practice of archaeology and historic preservation.
