Madrid Madrid, founded in the 9th century as "Magerit," is a sprawling city where you can find everything from opera to flamenco to great museums, amusement parks, bullfights. Exploring Madrid with your kids, will it be the glories of the Prado, bumper boats in the park, armor in the Royal Palace, Spanish pastries from a local bakery, Paleolithic exhibits at the National Archeology museum or walking through the streets at twilight? Strolling in Madrid is a wonderful way for kids to spend the day or an evening. Start at the Plaza Mayor which often features free musical concerts, grab an ice cream cone or a "churro" (doughnut-like tubes) and settle down with a city guide to map-out a personalized trek through the city. When planning your day-routes, there are few streets not to be missed for pure charm: San Ricardo, Cáiz, del Pozo and Alvarez Gato, Calle de la Victoria, Espoz y Mina, Cruz Núñez de Arce, the streets around the Plaza Mayor and the Calle de Postas and San Cristóbal. An evening walk?

Crete Iraklion (Heraklion) and Knossos It's not instantly obvious that this busy, noisy city has such an ancient past, but when kids stand on the ramparts of the Venetian fort and look back at Iraklion, they can conjure up centuries of Minoans, Greeks, Romans, Saracens, Venetians, and Ottoman Turks sailing their ships into the old harbor. Venetian Harbor Castello del Molo . At the entrance to the fort, built by the Venetians in the 16th century, don't miss the Lion of St. Mark, symbol of Venice. Inside the fort, it's largely empty except for a few cannons, but climb up on the ramparts for a wonderful view of the harbor, Iraklion and the Sea of Crete. (Castle is closed on Mondays.) Or just relax and watch the fishing boats in the harbor. Right next to the harbor are the Venetian ship sheds , the Arsenali , now just the ruins. In the Arsenali, huge ships were constructed or repaired. Archeological Museum Morosini Fountain bougatsa , custard or cheese phyllo. Bougatsa, a specialty of Crete, is the perfect snack.

That's just what Don Clucas's Alta Loma elementary and junior high school students have been doing for over 20 years. an amateur archeologist and a specialist in Native American history and culture, Clucas (also an elementary school teacher at Deer Canyon Shool) has been taking his students on mini-archeological expeditions to local sites since the early 1970s, not long after he started teaching in the Alta Loma school district. The expedition starts in the classroom, but quickly moves outside for actual hands-on digging.

The book I reviewed was about basic archaeology. I thought it was very good and well-designed. The topic of the book was very interesting, as someday I hope to be an archaeologist too. I think that anyone could read it, but they should have a slight interest in archaeology and be prepared for the material the book covers.
The book is full of technical information about what archaeologists do when they are studying different periods in human history. Each section includes several activities and games you can do for fun, but many are experiments and techniques that real archaeologists use themselves. For example, to see how the First People lived, there are projects to learn how to make a small fire by striking flint and how to make a little stone tool. For the activities, there was a good combination of fun and very interesting things to do.

  • Like mud pies? YEAH, I thought sowell you're in the right place. Archaeology definitely involves dirt! How about garbagedo you like to study it? Yuck, that's gross, right? Well, the truth is that archaeologists study mostly garbage which is often what people leave behind. The good thing is that really old garbage doesn't smell that bad. Think learning about the past is cool? You answered yesthen you have the makings of a FIRST RATE archaeologist!

ARCHAEOLOGY FOR KIDS:
PASTFINDERS SUMMER ADVENTURE
A paper presented by Ron Dalton at the North Eastern Anthropological Association (NEAA) annual meeting March 1999. With links to resources mentioned in the text.
Pastfinder's Summer Adventure is a summer-long educational program for children conducted by the Haverhill Historical Society and Buttonwoods Museum in Haverhill, Massachusetts . This series of thematically organized week-long sessions includes activities that relate to current museum exhibits such as Native American history, early settlement of Haverhill, archaeology, agricultural history, farm life, maritime history, period cooking, and appropriate field trips. The program began in 1997 and now offers hands-on activities each week that relate to local history and place that history within a broader regional context. The Museum's executive director Carolyn Singer requested Timelines, Inc. to provide professional assistance and instruction for approximately 16 children in an introduction to archaeology session for the program. The museum staff and the Haverhill Historical Society secured permission from the owners of the Thomas West House (aka"Elmwood") located on Kenoza Avenue in Haverhill. Dan and Luanne Meader are trustees of the Haverhill Historical Society and own and operate Elmwood Antiques at this location. They are planning to improve or enlarge a garden in their yard near Kenoza Avenue and offered their property to the Museum for the archaeology session. The museum accepted their gracious offer and scheduled the week-long archaeology session with Timelines.
