21. KIDS Only?-Ask Dr. Dirt-I Want To Be An Archeologist!
If you re looking for an easy way into archeology—read! There are loads of books on history; And, the TAS field school has a special kids field school.

Ask Dr. Dirt
I Want To Be an Archeologist!
Q: Dr. Dirt, I want to be an archeologist when I grow up. Should I start digging in my backyard to practice? A: Q: So I don't need to start digging anything up? I'm just sure there are some T-Rex bones under my dog's house. A: If you're lucky enough to be able to participate in a real dig, go for it! There's no better way to see if you like archeology than to get covered in dirt and dust! Just remember, there are plenty of ways to dig up information on archeology long before you need to dig in the dirt. And by the way, paleontologists, not archeologists, study dinosaur bones. You better leave that dig to your dog. Q: When do you get to officially be an archeologist? A: Well, some archeologists are professionals. They earn their living doing archeology. Other archeologists are avocationals. They do it in their spare time, so this is a two-part answer. Most professional archeologists get a college degree in anthropology and start working as paid crew members on archeological digs to gain experience. Most of those who stick with it go on to graduate school, where they continue to study archeology. While you're in college, you take special classes that have to do with what you think is cool and interesting. For instance, you may need to learn about geology and geography and other earth sciences that have much in common with archeology. Archeologists also attend "field school." No, they don't study fields, they learn how to dig up artifacts and study them! As you can guess, all this education can take a long time—years in fact. It's a good thing archeologists love history, because they have to learn plenty of it!

Encyclopedia - Archaeology
Archaeology (or Archeology ) is the study of human activity, primarily through the study of its material remains. Since most human activity is in the past, and most past human activity occurred before any written record, archaeology is the most important method for the study of human pre-history. Moreover, since the historical (i.e. written) record is incomplete, archaeology provides a vital contribution to the study of human history The material remains of human activity often have aesthetic, political, and monetary value. Consequently, many people identify archaeology with the collection of political or economic treasures. This is promulgated, for example, in popular movies dealing with the exploits of fictional archaeologists, e.g. Indiana Jones or the archaeologists in the recent film The Mummy Archaeology is a much broader field than suggested by these common conceptions. For example, ethnoarcheologists contribute to the study of contemporary societies. One branch of archaeology that is still struggling for acceptance, especially among academic archaeologists, is

The KIDS Report is published with the support of the Internet Scout Project and the National Science Foundation, and with a generous grant from John and Tashia Morgridge. The KIDS Report is a biweekly publication produced by K-12 students as a resource to other K-12 students. It is an ongoing, cooperative effort of 12 classrooms from around the United States. Teachers assist and provide support; however, students select, evaluate and annotate all resources included in every issue of the KIDS Report. This issue of the KIDS Report, dated April 27, 1999, was written and produced by students at Elmore Elementary School in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

This is a fun site to look at; it is divided into three parts. The Excavation has a calendar page that shows what day each piece was discovered. October 4, 1997, the last day of the dig, they found 1/4 of a Spanish coin and gun flints. The History section tells the story of Arbuckle's Fort in West Virginia, named after Captain Matthew Arbuckle in 1774. The Exhibit shows photographs of artifacts like wrought iron nails. It was so interesting that I could have read it for hours.

    The Human Skeleton
By Lena Marie Rossi Graphic source: BBC Education: Kids Health - Bones
At birth the human skeleton is made up of 275 different bones. As the body matures some of these bones, such as wrist and ankle bones, fuse together leaving only 206 bones in the adult body. The skeleton is the internal structure that holds the human body up and with the help of the muscular system allows us to move. The human skeleton also works to protect the delicate and vital organs found inside it from being damaged. There are two major systems of bones in the human body, the axial skeleton and the appendicular skeleton. The axial skeleton is comprised of the 80 bones in the skull, ribs, and sternum. The appendicular skeleton has 126 bones from the shoulders, pelvis, and attached limbs. Each bone is comprised of three major sections, the compact bone, the soft bone marrow, and the sponge bone. The soft bone marrow is found within the hollow center of the bone - this is where red blood cells are produced. Even though human bones appear to be quite strong they can experience dislocations and fractures. A dislocation occurs when a bone is pushed out of its socket by a sudden unexpected pressure such as a fall. Dislocated bones often require a quick reverse pressure to realign them in the socket. Fractures, actual breaks in the bone, can be quite serious and can take anywhere from a month to six months to heal depending on which bone is involved.
