About Holiday Art
ARBOR DAY
Most of the United States holds a holiday, called Arbor day, for the planting of new trees, a legal holiday in some states. States celebrate this holiday during April to May. However, Arbor Day is a relatively unknown holiday. People have planted trees to artistically beautify the landscape, to celebrate a newborn child, to mark the finish of a new house, and to signify religious ceremonies. This picture shows delicate white tree flowers. Arbor Day was created as a holiday in Nebraska on April 22, 1872 after a newspaper publisher promoted the value of trees to conserve soil. This holiday of art spread the lasting value of tree planting to other states. Traditions: Holiday Art The New Year Mother In Law Day Valentine's Day ... Christmas Holiday Requests? Suggestions? Arbor Day
Every April, one day is set aside just for trees. This day is known as Arbor Day and is officially observed on the last Friday of April. On this day, everyone is encouraged to plant and/or take care of a tree in their neighborhood. How it All Began
A Nebraska man named J. Sterling Morton, who was a settler from Detroit, originally started Arbor Day in 1872. The very first Arbor Day was held on April 10th of that year and it is believed that more than one million trees were planted statewide. Arbor Day wasn’t celebrated again until 1874 but it proved to be so popular that it was officially declared a state holiday in 1885. Nebraska chose April 22nd, Morton’s birthday, as the official date. Since then, many other states have followed suit and declared their own Arbor Day. While the majority officially celebrate in April, the observed day can fall anywhere between January and May depending on the planting conditions in that particular state. Nationally, President Nixon made the last Friday in April the official Arbor Day date for the entire country in 1970.

Some books in the bibliography contain brief annotations. Items that indicate 'Available at UW',' are located either in the Curriculum Materials or Children's Literature stacks of the University of Washington's Suzzallo-Allen Library (main campus), or, at the UW Bothell or Tacoma Libraries. Subscribe to The Republic Ten trees to plant in the Valley for Arbor Day. John Stanley The Arizona Republic Apr. 29, 2005 12:00 AM Hear, hear. Arbor Day may be rooted in the past, but it's all about the future. Even in our desert environment, where cactuses far outnumber trees, a day promoting the planting of trees has meaning. advertisement OAS_AD('BoxAd') "I think Arbor Day is even more important here," says Betty Nelson, urban forestry coordinator for Phoenix's parks and recreation department. "Especially in a desert city, we need to emphasize the importance of planting trees for all their benefits - shade, cooling effects, the oxygen they supply, providing homes for birds and wild animals, how they help get rid of pollution, and the esthetic beauty we love." And if that's not enough incentive, consider this: Trees boost property values.
