A classical as well as modern language with a long cultural legacy, Arabic has been language in world history for more than 1500 years. One can hardly overestimate the importance of the language in contemporary world culture and commerce. Over 250 million people speak one or more types of Arabic in what is known as the "Arab World". Countless others in Asia, Africa, Europe, South America and North America either speak Arabic as a first or second language, or use it as part of their daily religious observances. It is one of only six official languages at the United Nations and is regarded as a "critical language" by the United States government. The language is also the centerpiece of Binghamton University's program in Near Eastern Studies, and an important component of the affiliated program in Middle Eastern and North African Studies ( MENA ). In addition to the Arabic major or minor, which can include courses in both Standard and dialectal Arabic (e.g. Egyptian or Moroccan), the program in Near Eastern Studies offers courses in literature as well as special topics courses dealing with key issues in Arabic and Islamic civilization, past and present. The flexible nature of the program, and in particular the Independent Studies option, allows it to offer a wide range of courses catering to the needs of majors as well as students form other departments, whether graduate or undergraduate.

In addition to the Basic Requirements, there are further requirements specific to each concentration. BASIC REQUIREMENTS: 14 c.u. Language Requirement: 6 c.u.
Both basic language courses and advanced courses in literature in the original language count toward this requirement. Breadth Requirement: 2 c.u.
AMES 25 (Introduction to the Ancient Near East) and AMES 36 (Introduction to the Middle East), which are broad-based, culturally integrated introductory courses on Near Eastern literatures, history, cultures, and thought from ancient to modern times, fulfill the breadth requirement. This requirement provides majors with a overall understanding of Near Eastern cultures which span more than four millennia, so that they are familiar with other Near East traditions in addition to the one in which they concentrate. Electives: 6 c.u.
These will normally be content courses within the chosen concentration, but each concentration imposes certain constraints on the electives to be selected. Electives must be selected for appropriateness with the student's major advisor.
Students may count up to four courses from outside the Department (i.e., not cross-listed in NELC) towards the major electives; and up to seven courses, with the special approval of the student's advisor. In no case may a student count more than half of the total major requirements in non-NELC courses.

Near Eastern Studies
Near Eastern Studies at Princeton go back to the turn of the century when, as elsewhere, interest in this field, Biblically oriented, centered on the ancient history of the ``cradle of civilization.'' The roots were diffuse, albeit vigorous; there were pioneer scholars of distinction and beginnings of a superlative library for teaching and research. The most dynamic pioneer was Howard Crosby Butler , a specialist in ancient Near Eastern archaeology and architecture who mounted expeditions to Syria and Anatolia in 1899, 1904, and 1909 and headed the notable excavations at Antioch and Sardis; he was Princeton's charter trustee of the Jerusalem School for Oriental Research. In 1901 he brought to Princeton the noted German epigrapher, Enno Littmann, who had accompanied him in Syria; Littmann served as librarian of the Oriental collections and as lecturer in Semitic philology until 1906 when he returned to Tbingen. Four years later he was succeeded by another German scholar, Rudolph Brnnow who was Professor of Semitic Philology. After Brnnow's death in 1917, the teaching of Semitics declined, and the development of Sanskrit and Indo-European philology began auspiciously under Harold H. Bender

The programme of Arabic in the Department of Arabic and Near Eastern Studies (formerly the Department of Arabic) is being given a new impetus within the context of Arabic culture and language. Moreover, prospective candidates of this department are now also being offered a new degree in Near Eastern Studies. Courses in the respective languages and civilizations are offered in both degree programmes, with the main emphasis on the former. The language courses purport to bring students into direct contact with the languages concerned via training in grammar, general philology, and literary works in the original version. On the other hand, the civilization courses are aimed at providing the students with an overview of various cultural aspects - such as archaeology, history, religion, and literature - of Semitic and other Near Eastern societies. Students are expected to boost the courses on civilization with a good amount of personal background reading. Arabic.

18.1 The 'Near East' is widely defined and, in this context, extends from Morocco to Mongolia and from Ethiopia to Kazakhstan. The languages covered include Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, Turkish, the range of Iranian and Turkic languages across central Asia, the languages of the Caucasus (principally Georgian and Armenian), Coptic, Amharic, Aramaic, Syriac and the languages of the ancient Near East, as well as Yiddish, Mongolian and Urdu. 18.2 The Library aims to satisfy the present and future research and teaching needs of the University. These needs are primarily in the faculties of Oriental Studies and Divinity but also exist in a range of other departments such as History, International Relations, Archaeology, Law and French (where there is an interest in North Africa). 18.3 Arabic
The main focus of research and teaching is on the classical heritage of Arabic literature in its widest sense, on the turath (the traditional religious, historical and literary heritage), together with the classical and modern language, linguistics, and representative modern literature. The Library aims to acquire material extensively in these areas, but much more selectively in other subject areas. 18.4 Hebrew and Yiddish
