More Student Speakers Try to Fill Need By Amy Argetsinger
Washington Post Staff Writer
Saturday, July 3, 2004; Page B01 Five weeks into their intensive introductory Arabic course, and the words seemed to flow with ease around the classroom at George Washington University, the 16 undergraduates chanting together. "Wahad ithnein thalatha arba'a khamsa sitta saba'a thamania tisa'a a'ashara. . . ." A'a -shara!" said their teacher, correcting their emphasis. A'a -shara!" they repeated. Almost, he said. " Aachhh ," he rasped again, craning his neck and touching his throat "a stronger one!" Aachhh -shara!" they said, and he smiled. They had done it: They had counted from one to 10. Scenes like these have been playing out increasingly in classrooms across the country as the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and the subsequent U.S. invasion of Iraq have spurred a growing interest in Middle East affairs and pointed out the need for fluent speakers of Arabic.

Tongue Twisters
Learning a difficult language like Arabic requires real dedication. So, why are so many people signing up for classes?
By Elizabeth Chang Sunday, August 7, 2005; Page W33 Arabic teacher Mustafa Alhashimi paces in front of his five adult students, clucking like a turkey. He's illustrating the sound made by the letter qaaf, and his class at the International Language Institute in Northwest Washington is earnestly clucking along with him. "This is an important letter," Alhashimi says. Qaaf is used in the word Quran, after all, and in Qatar, which is where student Lydia Kepich, a special education teacher, will be going to work in a few months. Unfortunately, neither she nor the rest of the class is quite sure how to pronounce Qatar. A lot of Westerners pronounce it like "gutter," which, Alhashimi emphasizes, is really not nice.
Education Review
It's the sixth week of this 10-week evening class in beginning Arabic, and the students are still working their way through the 28-letter Arabic alphabet. Some of the sounds the letters make don't have equivalents in English, and they can be difficult for native English speakers to enunciate. Furthermore, the striking letters, with their flourishes, curves, circles and dots, change form depending on where they are in the word. A stand-alone qaaf is what Alhashimi calls a "cup-like shape," beginning with a small circle on the right side with two dots over it. A qaaf that begins a word flattens out on the left. A qaaf in the middle of a word is a small circle with the two dots over it and is linked to the letters before and after it. A qaaf at the end of a word is connected to the letter before it on the right, includes a dotted circle and ends with an upward curve, or cup, on the left.

Establishment of Arabic language academy
Regional, Culture, 1/31/2000 The idea of establishing an Arabic language academy was first introduced late in the nineteenth century with the intent of ensuring that Arabic keeps up with concepts of modern civilization, particularly in relation to political terms used in the Egyptian press, to establish standardized equivalents for terms transliterated from other tongues and to further the dissemination of knowledge nationwide as well; hence, the resolution incepting it on December 1932, and the Cairo-based Academy was inaugurated on January 30, 1934.
Prior to the establishment of the academy, many literacy and linguistic associations had taken up as the main goal the development of the Arabic language. The most famous of which is the academy set up in 1892 following the example of "L'Academie Francaise". However, it came to a stop some time later. Many attempts at reestablishing an academy were made in the years 1900, 1907, 1910 and 1917 successively.
The Arabic language Academy underwent many radical changes afterwards. The statute of the Academy was modified many a time. The Academy's membership increased from 20 in 1934 to 30 seven years later and in 1946 became 40. Those whose work contributed enormously to the study of Arabic language and dialects were given the title of "honorary member". Others were given the title of "correspondent members". In 1955, it was enacted that the Academy, which was at the time affiliated to the Ministry of Education, be deemed an independent legal person, and that the non-Egyptian members do not exceed 12. The Academy is international in the sense that it has both Arab and non-Arab Orientalists, as its members. The motto of the Academy is that knowledge and understanding among countries of the East and these of the West are above all. It has in addition to linguists and authors a membership of doctors, chemists, physicians, mathematicians, lawmakers and other specialists.
