Disease diagnosis and prevention is critical to the success of aquaculture in Arkansas. The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) has three fish disease diagnostic laboratories that provide a variety of services to support the industry. The regions served by these laboratories produce more than $135 million annually of food, bait, ornamental, and sport fish. The laboratories are located at Lonoke, in the heart of the baitfish industry, at Lake Village, in the heart of catfish industry in Arkansas, and at the Aquaculture/Fisheries Center on the UAPB campus. Services provided by the UAPB fish disease laboratories are not limited to remedial help once a disease problem has occurred. The laboratories are very involved in disease prevention through educational programs and farm visits, and provide a link to get the latest research results out to farmers. Services provided by the diagnostic labs help farmers to increase farm productivity and to expand into new markets including export. The UAPB facility has recently gained approval by APHIS to certify warmwater fish virus-free for export to Europe. Services at Lonoke and Lake Village include parasite and bacterial disease diagnostics, water chemistry analysis, and disease-free certification. Specialized services at the UAPB facility include viral diagnosis, hematology, and tests for species determination of the less common bacteria. The UAPB lab also collects and analyzes disease data from the three labs in order to set research priorities and to identify trends in incidence that may give early warning of diseases with the potential to cause serious economic losses.

EDUCATION
MASTER AQUACULTURE AND FISHERIES (MAF)
The Master Aquaculture and Fisheries combines knowledge from different disciplines (such as nutrition, growth, reproduction and health) with the aim of improving development of the culture of fish and molluscs worldwide. Fisheries strive for the sustainable exploitation and development of fresh water ecosystems and tropical coastal zones from the viewpoints of production, recreation and nature conservation. The interaction between the management of fish stocks and fisheries is important in this respect. Underlying disciplines such as aquatic ecology, fish biology, fish ecology, fish population dynamics and socio-economics are integrated to develop models of fish yield and concepts for the management of fish stocks. The Aquaculture and Fisheries programme aims to train skilled and qualified professionals in the fields of aquaculture, fisheries and related areas by providing them with the skills to develop, support and maintain sustainable forms of aquaculture, fisheries and fish stock management. The Master of Science programme of Aquaculture and Fisheries has two specialisations:
  • Aquaculture
Aquaculture deals with the culture of aquatic organisms and requires thorough knowledge of the biology, physiology and ecology of the cultured animals. It is a multidisciplinary field in which the aforementioned biological aspects are integrated with technical, engineering and economic disciplines.
