Ecosystems, such as continental shelves and slopes, are more affected than other areas; they naturally suffer less disturbance (by storm waves for example) and have evolved for slower growth and other biological processes, which means that recovery takes places over a longer period of time (Watling et al., 1998).

Overview
Capture and aquaculture fisheries make an important contribution to Hong Kong by maintaining a steady supply of fresh fish to local consumers. The commercially important marine species in terms of landed weight are bigeye golden thread croaker horse-head and pomfret . The total capture fisheries and marine fish culture production is equivalent to about 31 % of seafood consumed in Hong Kong, while pond fish farmers produce about six percent of the freshwater fish eaten. edit
Capture fisheries
Hong Kong’s fishing activities are conducted mainly in the waters of the adjacent continental shelf in the South and East China Seas . They extend over a 160 kilometre wide section of this shelf between the Gulf of Tonkin and the East China Sea. In 2003, the estimated yield of fishery products was about 157,444

ISBN 1-57808-082-7; 2000; 292 Pages; US $ 88.00 Buy Now Presents information that can be useful to facilitate the aquaculture of a wide variety of food species. Operation of an economically successful aquaculture venture depends upon the complete life cycle of a species occurring in captivity. Possible solutions to how such complete control of life cycles of important food organisms might be accomplished are presented in each chapter. Whereas this volume (Part A) deals with Seaweeds and Invertebrates, a compendium volume (Part B) deals with Fishes. Aquaculture/Fisheries - "Center of Excellence" About Our Center Welcome to the Aquaculture/Fisheries (AQFI) Center at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB). The Center of Excellence was created in 1988 to combine resident instruction, research, and extension responsibilities into one comprehensive unit. Our faculty, staff and students work together, across disciplines and functions to offer research-based scientific solutions to make a difference in Arkansas and throughout the U.S. The AQFI Center of Excellence at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) is recognized as a leader in aquaculture/fisheries teaching, research and extension programs. It is the only comprehensive aquaculture program within the University of Arkansas System to support the state's $167 million aquaculture industry. This industry has an economic impact of over $1.2 billion in the Delta region of Arkansas. We have a growing natural fisheries component that provides scientific support to the recreational fishing industry that has an economic impact of over $440 million/yr in Arkansas.

Fisheries and Aquaculture
Commercial harvesting activities in British Columbia, whether they be the commercial harvest of wild species , or the raising of aquatic species on farms , are a vital element of the economy of the province.
What's New!
Aquaculture
Aquaculture is a significant contributor to the provincial economy, and most aquaculture jobs are located in coastal communities. With its climate, good water quality and sheltered bays, British Columbia's coastline is well suited for both finfish and shellfish aquaculture. In 2003, the farmgate value of the salmon, shellfish and trout sectors combined was $272.2 million. Farmed salmon is B.C.'s largest agricultural export product. There are three main species groups currently cultured in British Columbia waters:
Commercial Fisheries Commercial fisheries are also a significant contributor to the provincial economy and the social fabric of numerous coastal communities. This industry includes the commercial harvesting of more than 80 different species of finfish, shellfish, and marine plants from both freshwater and marine environments. In 2003, the landed value of the salmon, groundfish, shellfish and herring fisheries combined was $364.6 million.

A Family Tradition since 1932 PRODUCTS - If it can be done to a freshwater fish Stoller Fisheries can do it for you.
Stoller Fisheries specializes in fish products from freshwater fish, and all of its products are kosher under supervision from Star-K. Stoller Fisheries operates under HACCP and has been assigned an export approval number from the United States Food and Drug Administration. Stoller Fisheries also produces a full line of fish caviars, commercial baits, byproducts from fish waste, and engages in custom processing.
Feature 1:
PLATE-FROZEN FISH BLOCKS The supply of plate-frozen fish blocks from either mechanically deboned (minced) fish and small filets is becoming more and more scarce from traditionally species such as COD. Stoller Fisheries is investigating the installation of a plate freezer to plate freeze blocks of filets and mechanically deboned fish from under utilized species of fresh water fish such as carp, buffalo fish, fresh water sheep head, and fresh water suckers. Custom processing is available.
Feature 2:
SOUP BASES AND FISH STOCKS
As a primary processor Stoller Fisheries is capable of mincing (mechanically deboning) up to 60,000 pounds of under utilized species of fresh water fish daily. These fish include the common carp, buffalo fish, fresh water sheep head (drum), fresh water sucker (also known as the fresh water mullet) and many other species. The company can also mechanically debone salmon and ocean species. There is a growing demand for minced fish to be used as dehydrated soup bases and as fish stocks and Stoller Fisheries can custom process these fish for your needs. Please direct your inquiry to either Tom Opheim or Larry Stoller.

Aquatic genetic diversity
Oceans, lakes and rivers cover four-fifths of the earth's surface but little is known about their living resources and fewer aquatic than terrestrial species have been described. For the most part the aquatic harvest consists of wild rather than farmed species but demand for all types of aquatic product is rising. In aquaculture, more aquatic species are being farmed than ever before and the application of genetic biotechnologies has provided significant increases in aquaculture production. However, the vast majority of aquatic genetic resources still reside in wild populations and the culture of several important species relies on the collection of brood stock or seed from natural populations. This collection of wild resources depends on healthy, genetically diverse natural populations, but can at the same time, adversely impact the survival of these species if not developed in a responsible manner.
FAO and aquatic genetic diversity
The FAO Fisheries Resources Division carries out a number of activities on genetic diversity. A major activity is the
