Dear all, I want to take this opportunity to welcome all members of the Department to the start of a new academic year. Over the past two semesters there were a record number of graduate students who completed their degrees, and more importantly, found good positions in their chosen field! It was a busy summer for many. Students were working on internships at Los Alamos National Labs, attending conferences, giving presentations and doing summer teaching. Others were busy preparing for the qualifying and comprehensive examinations. The faculty were equally busy, and we congratulate the 4 faculty who were awarded new funding from NSF. This is a reflection of the outstanding record of our Department. I encourage colleagues and students visiting this website to see the faculty web pages and the research they are doing. Their work defines the type of Department we have become. The next three years will be an important period in the life of the Department. The University is working on a new building for the Department, which will help alleviate some of our growing pains. With this new facility we will be developing an expanded curriculum at the undergraduate and graduate levels to take advantage of the new technology. There are many other ideas on the drawing board, and we expect exciting and challenging new opportunities to come from all this work.

The Mathematics Department was featured in a recent article in Economist magazine. The article, entitled "Proof and Beauty", profiles Professor Tom Hales' recent research, and the implications of this research to the philosophy of mathematics. It appeared in the March 31, 2005 edition of the print version of Economist magazine, and is available on-line to subscribers of Economist magazine.
Mathematics PhD student Carolina Manica wins international research award
The Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics has announced that University of Pittsburgh Mathematics PhD student Carolina Manica is a winner of the 2005 Student Paper Prize . Each year since 1999 SIAM, the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, has awarded this prize for the most outstanding research paper of the year written (or co-authored by) a mathematics PhD student. This award is based solely on the merit and content of the student's contribution to the submitted paper. Carolina's winning paper was "Convergence of Time Averaged Statistics of Finite Element Approximations of the Navier-Stokes Equations," (co-authored with V. John and W. Layton). Applied Mathematics The Division's programs in Applied Mathematics provide students with a strong undergraduate education in both methodology and practical application. Flexible programs allow students to concentrate in applied mathematics with a specialization in areas of application such as biological sciences, chemistry, computer science, decision and control, economics, electrical engineering, environmental engineering, geophysical sciences, mechanical engineering, physics, scientific computing, social and behavioral sciences, and statistics. . Many students prepare for graduate work either in applied mathematics or in the particular discipline in which they expect to work. For Prospective Students and Potential Concentrators Why study Applied Mathematics? Applied Mathematics is especially appealing to those who prefer solving problems, not just learning mathematical theory. Students can combine the study of mathematics with a wide array of applications in many fields: biology, genomics, chemistry, computer science, decision and control, economics, electrical engineering, geophysical sciences, mechanical engineering, scientific computing, physics, social and behavioral sciences, and statistics. Graduates can use their skills to pursue many careers, from wall-street traders to analysts to bioinformaticists, or use their knowledge as a stepping stone for graduate work.
