Schwartz NEW YORK (CNNfn) - There are those among us for whom math just makes sense They are the followers of Pythagoras. The ones who breezed through calculus. And more likely than not, the ones who can tell you how long it takes train A to catch train B – factoring in wind velocity, speed and freight loads. They are the math majors of the world. And despite their shrinking ranks, insiders say the undergraduate degree in mathematics remains a solid springboard for career advancement especially when coupled with courses in computer science or economics.   "There are options out there," said Tom Rishel, associate director of programs and services at the Mathematical Association of America in Washington. "It's not just a question of being a teacher or actuary. There are all these other possibilities." How they fare Mathematicians, as defined by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, use mathematical theory, computational techniques, algorithms and the latest computer technology to solve economic, engineering, physics and business problems.

Applied Mathematics employs a variety of mathematical methods and techniques to explore, describe, and predict the behavior of scientific, industrial, and engineering phenomena. Applied Mathematics appeals to individuals interested in applying their mathematical interests and skills to real-world problems. There is a need nationally for individuals with rigorous training in applied mathematics. Graduates of our program acquire the necessary applied mathematical skills needed to help meet this demand. We are one of the three SUNY campuses offering a degree in Applied Mathematics. Applied mathematicians have the skills needed to pursue careers as statisticians, demographics analysts, scientific programmers, cryptographers, biological systems analysts, statistical forecasters, computer modeling consultants, reliability analysts, and aerospace systems analysts. They obtain employment in fields as diverse as aerospace, oil exploration, electrical manufacturing, geology, actuarial science, chemistry, communications, and computing. Health sciences, applied science, and engineering offer additional prospects to applied mathematicians in the academic, business, industrial, and government sectors. The basic skills required to succeed in any of these fields are acquired in the Applied Mathematics Program.

Welcome to the Department of Theoretical and Applied Mathematics, the largest unit in the Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences at The University of Akron . There are two divisions in the Department: Mathematics and Applied Mathematics. Each of the divisions offers a bachelor's and master's program, with a Ph.D. program available in Engineering Applied Mathematics administered jointly by the Department and the College of Engineering . Through these degree programs, our students receive solid training in analytical, modeling, and simulation skills and find a wide range of career choices in industry, finance, education, and government agencies.
The Department features dedicated faculty who excel in teaching, research, and service. We serve more than three thousand students in various mathematics classes every semester. Our faculty's teaching accomplishments have been recognized by many College and University teaching awards. In addition, most of our faculty are active researchers whose scholarly activities, covering broad areas from pure and applied mathematics to mathematics education and teacher training, are currently supported by grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF), National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Office of Naval Research, Ohio Board of Regents, and various other state agencies and private foundations.

We are most excited about the latter contributions, as we develop collaborations on our own research interests, on shared applied science curricula, and on the developments of our graduate program. These seminar lectures allow faculty and graduate students to view applied science with a mathematical flavor, to meet a diverse group of applied scientists, and for graduate students in particular to get a sense of potential career opportunities. All are welcome! Refreshments prior to the talk will be served in Phillips Hall, Room 330, at 3:30pm. The seminars will be held in Phillips Hall, Room 385, unless otherwise noted. Significant Points
  • A Ph.D. degree in mathematics usually is the minimum education needed, except in the Federal Government.
  • Employment is expected to contract, reflecting the decline in the number of jobs with the title mathematician; competition will be keen for the limited number of jobs.
  • Master’s and Ph.D. degree holders with a strong background in mathematics and a related discipline, such as computer science or engineering, should have better employment opportunities in related occupations.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Theoretical mathematicians advance mathematical knowledge by developing new principles and recognizing previously unknown relationships between existing principles of mathematics. Although these workers seek to increase basic knowledge without necessarily considering its practical use, such pure and abstract knowledge has been instrumental in producing or furthering many scientific and engineering achievements. Many theoretical mathematicians are employed as university faculty, and divide their time between teaching and conducting research. (See the statement on , elsewhere in the
