  • According to Alberta Education's Program of Studies for K-12 Mathematics (1996), "students learn by attaching meaning to what they do; and they must be able to construct their own meaning of mathematics. This meaning is best developed when learners encounter mathematical experiences that proceed from the simple to the complex and from the concrete to the abstract (p. 2-4)."
The main goals of mathematics education are to prepare students to: use mathematics confidently to solve problems communicate and reason mathematically appreciate and value mathematics commit themselves to lifelong learning become mathematically literate adults, using mathematics to contribute to society. The four strands of mathematics are:
Number Patterns and Relations Shape and Space Statistics and Probability (p. 2-4)

TeacherTECH http://teachertech.rice.edu/Lessons/ TeacherTECH is the teacher-training component of GirlTECH, a program of Center for Excellence and Equity in Education (CEEE) at Rice University. The project focuses on providing technology training and exploring "innovative teaching strategies that impact equity in the classroom." TeacherTECH offers lesson plans designed by teachers in a way that is intended to "take full advantage of Internet resources and to teach mathematics and science concepts in new and exciting ways." From this website, visitors can select lessons by the year they were developed (going back to 1995) or search on a particular topic or string of words. The lesson ideas are described along with links to additional resources. The lesson descriptions include related graphs, data tables, as well as suggested ways to extend the activity or integrate technology. [VF] Back to Contents Back to Top

    http://www.msnucleus.org/membership/guide/phil_lesson.html
Lesson Plans The lesson plans are divided within each of the Cycles (Applied Science, Universe, Plate Tectonics, Rock, Water, and Life). Each of the cycles is further divided into 4 themes. For example, Applied Science is divided into Science and Math, Physics, Technology, and Build Environment. Each of the themes is divided into the Pre Lab, the Lab, and Post Lab, for each week that you teach it. For example Applied Sciences - Science and Math is taught for 3 weeks. Each week is given an appropriate letter (A is the first week, B is the second). This helps in finding materials and organizing lesson plans. The Pre Lab introduces the student to the subject matter. Many times the activity relates directly to the Lab, but sometimes it attempts to get the students prepared. We have found that teachers sometimes don’t understand the connection at first, but as they become more familiar with the activities they will comprehend the sequence. Skills are important in completing the lab. Sometimes teachers go directly to the Lab without complete the Pre Lab; this is a mistake. Teachers should also prepare the students for the hands on lab. We have found that anticipation of the subject helps them to remember the lab easily. When you are doing the first Pre Lab in a cycle, a teacher should inform students that they are moving into a new cycle. They may want to review the last cycle briefly. Review and repeat help students understand and remember large concepts.

    Critical Issue:
Locating, Using, and Integrating Internet-Based Mathematics Materials
ISSUE : The Internet contains vast amounts of valuable and motivating mathematics resources for K-12 educators and students. However, educators often have difficulty locating, accessing, and meaningfully integrating these materials into their schools' mathematics curricula and using the materials in instructionally appropriate ways.
    OVERVIEW:
Learning With Technology: Merging Onto the Information Highway , produced by NCREL in 1994. ( QuickTime slide show with audio, 298K)
Dr. Offie Hobbs, principal at Madison Middle School 2000, discusses bringing the Internet and computers into the academic playing field.
Excerpted from Learning With Technology: Merging Onto the Information Highway , produced by NCREL in 1994. (Audio comment, 264K) A text transcript is available. However, the size, complexity, and technical language of the Internet often discourage people from using Internet resources in depth. Others have difficulty finding a way to connect. To make the job easier, several agencies have been created that help schools and districts connect to the Internet.
