Constructing JList s
I have just been using a JList Vector but not one taking a List ArrayList or LinkedList . I would have thought that the requirement for the data to a JList was that it was a sequence. In Java, List is the type for a sequence so why isn't it allowed? Why pick out Vector for special treatment? I can see that discrimination against LinkedList is more or less acceptable because a LinkedList JList ArrayList however is a perfectly adequate random access sequence yet you have to use to create an array to provide the model for a JList Unless I am missing something really obvious, it seems that the people who develop Swing do not believe in The Collections Framework. Sun say that ArrayList is to be preferred over Vector but it seems that Sun is not listening to its own message, continuing to ignore Collections in Swing. I assume that the use of Vector is a hang over from pre-Collections days, which is many, many moons ago now. Given that a Vector is a List and the toArray method works fine, why haven't they deprecated the

VB Shell Programming
Integrating Applications with the Windows Shell
By  J.P. Hamilton
First Edition July 2000
ISBN: 1-56592-670-6
This book is out of print, but is available on Safari Bookshelf
Visual Basic Shell Programming ventures where none have gone before by showing how to develop shell extensions that more closely integrate an application with the Windows shell, while at the same time providing an advanced tutorial-style treatment of COM programming with Visual Basic. Each major type of shell extension gets attention, including customized context menu handlers, per instance icons, and customized property sheets. [

Name /dev/midi is a symbolic link that points to the default MIDI device file The instruments are defined just by including some MIDI program change
http://www.4front-tech.com/pguide/midi.html
MIDI Programming
Introduction
There is a separate device file for each installed MIDI interface. The device name contains two decimal digits which specify the interface number. The interface number is shown in the printout produced by cat /dev/sndstat . For example the device file for the first installed MIDI port is /dev/midi00 . Name /dev/midi is a symbolic link that points to the default MIDI device file which is usually /dev/midi00
These device files have similar capabilities than the ordinary /dev/tty interface. Everything written to the device will be sent to the midi port as soon as possible (there could be some earlier written bytes in the queue which delay the transmit). There are no timing features which make it difficult to use these devices for sequencer like applications. The intended use for this interface is sending and receiving system exclusive messages. For example this is required when making a patch editors and librarians for various MIDI synthesizers.
Reading from the device waits until there are at least one byte in the receive buffer. When the first byte is received, the driver will not wait for additional characters. This means that the read returns usually less bytes than requested. Since the MIDI transfer rate is fairly high
(about 31 kbaud), several bytes will be received before the reading process finally gets activated and is able to continue execution of the read call. On my 486/50 system it can receive up to about 60 bytes at a time. On a slower or heavier loaded system the read could return even more data at once.

History
Miranda was developed in 1985-86 by David Turner, and is now currently being marketed by Research Software Ltd. of England. Miranda was the successor of the functional languages SASL and KRC. With Miranda, the main goal was to produce a commercial version of a standard non-strict purely functional language. To make Miranda commercially viable, the development environment had to be made very flexible and easy-to-use.
Significant Language Features
  • Miranda, A Non-Strict Purely Functional Language
      Non-Strict:
In Non-Strict functional languages, the arguments to a function are not evaluated until they are actually required within the functions being called. Therefore, any parameter can be passed to a function and until it is needed in that function, this parameter is not evaluated. This is also known as lazy evaluation, and the main advantage of using this method is that it allows for passing infinite element data structures to a function.
    • Purely Functional:

    • Pure functional languages perform all computation using function application. "Side-effect" features such as destructive assignments and looping are not even provided within the language, and therefore all programs have to strictly adhere to the functional approach of programming.

99. Programming Language Categories
Brief text compares 6 basic language types general scripting, programmer scripting, application development, lowlevel, pure functional, complete core.
http://www.cs.oberlin.edu/~jwalker/languageCategories.html
Programming Language Categories
There are literally thousands of programming languages in the world and each has its own strengths and weakness. Many are simply for teaching or language research. These languages do not interest or concern me. They are frequently limited and almost useless. There is a certain set of programming fields/categories that I believe are currently distinct enough to have an independent programming language to represent them. Each is however, narrow enough that there is no need for more than one language. Language Role Best Candidate Scripting Programmer's scripting Better Scheme (+OO) Application Development Low-level C/C++ Pure Functional Complete Core
Scripting
The most basic need of for scripting languages is one which is simple to use because it will be used by those with a minimum of programming knowledge or in situations where cranking out code which does the job is all the matters. An example of where this language might be used by people with more of a programming background is in web scripting. Examples of languages that might fall into this category are PHP, JavaScript, Perl, and Python. VB could also be considered in this family but it is too frequently used for application development today. There is currently no outstanding candidate language for this category. When one is chosen I believe it should bare resemblance to the Application development language but with more bells and whistles to let one crank things out and make it easier.

History
Significant Language Features
ALGOL was the first second-generation programming language and its characteristics are typical of the entire generation. First consider the data structures, which are very close to first generation structures. In ALGOL 60 the block structure was introduced: the ability to create blocks of statements for the scope of variables and the extent of influence of control statements. Along with that, two different means of passing parameters to subprograms; call by value and call by name. Structured control statements: if - then - else and the use of a general condition for iteration control were also features, as was the concept of recursion: the ability of a procedure to call itself. One of the greatest impacts ALGOL 60 had was a result of its description as found in Naur (1963). A major contribution of this report was the introduction of BNF notation for defining the syntax of the language. Overall, ALGOL is considered to be perhaps the most orthogonal programming language, meaning it has a relatively small number of basic constructs and a set of rules for combining those constructs. Every construct has a type associated with it and there are no restrictions on those types. In addition, most constructs produce values. Several of ALGOL’s other characteristics are listed below:
