OPL - Open Programming Language
OPL is a high-level language for Symbian OS devices, with a low learning curve. this diary keeps you up to date as we continue to develop it. The OPL Symbian Diary is here to provide you with news, articles and tutorials all about The Open Programming Language for Symbian OS. It is a companion site to the Source Forge pages (linked to on the left), and we hope to provide a friendly source of information for OPL.
OPL Runtime for UIQ updated to 0.54
The OPL runtime for the UIQ platform has been updated to version 0.54. Changes:
- Bug fix: dINIT Problems with Buttons. Empty dialogs were incorrectly created with three buttons labelled "Continue","Other","OK". With this fix, just one button "OK" is shown.
- Bug fix: Four buttons as default on UIQ. Unwanted blank buttons are now removed from dialogs.

Appendix D: What You Need
This is a hypertext version of Appendix D in the text Windows Sockets Network Programming , by Bob Quinn and Dave Shute. This appendix summarizes what you need to create a WinSock application and maintain a test environment. We tell you what files you need, where to get them, or how to create them yourself. We consider the mechanics of application creation and execution. We describe how to switch between different WinSock implementations, and we mention the use of languages other than C.

Essential Files
The most essential file of all is a copy of the Windows Sockets version 1.1 specification itself (dated 20 January 1993). This is the definitive reference for WinSock by Martin Hall, Mark Towfiq, Geoff Arnold, David Treadwell, and Henry Sanders. The original work is in Microsoft Word version 2.0 format ( winsock.doc ), although it is also available in straight text (winsock.txt), postscript (winsock.ps), Windows help (winsock.hlp), and hypertext markup language (winsock.htm) formats. The essential file for WinSock development is the winsock.h

WinSock Development Tools
This section provides short descriptions of various WinSock application development tools currently available, and pointers to where you can find out more. This includes shareware, freeware and commercial utilities. They're all intended to help you with your WinSock application development, debugging, and support. The focus of this page is utilities, and not on high-level APIs (a.k.a. "middleware"). If you have any WinSock Development tools you'd like to see us add, please let us know by mailing a short description, with a relevant website URL, to rcq@sockets.com . And thanks in advance!

Concept Programming
Concept programming is initially a very simple idea: Your code should reflect the concepts in your application As simple as this idea is, it is not easy to implement, nor is it easy to fully understand the implications. As a matter of fact, I believe that this would give well enough material for an entire book. But I will try to quickly brush over the subject here.
What is a concept?
A concept is something from the application environment that matters to your program. A "window" displaying some information may be a concept. Most algorithms are derived from some mathematical concept. A "function" may be a concept. Programming is the art of turning concepts into code. Consider the concept of addition as an example. Across different languages, not only can the addition of A and B can be written in a variety of ways (different syntax), but it can also behave very differently (different semantics).

Introduction
One of my interests is in being able to develop software for the Pilot. When it comes to developing software for the pilot (and for other platforms!) I don't have the time or the patience to learn a new API and to write complex event loops - I believe that the programming language should provide the basic infrastructure and should let me concentrate on the problem I'm trying to solve and not on getting the right parts of structures filled out, getting pointers to point to the right place and so on. In particular, I gave up using C a number of years ago and have never looked back. I consider Java to be a much superior language (and I'm glad I leapfrogged having to deal with C++!) and also give high marks to various declarative programming languages such as Prolog Mercury Haskell , etc. and to scripting languages such as Python Ruby Lua , etc.

guy at alum dot mit dot edu Ok, let's begin by defining who this document is written for. Obviously, some basic knowledge of C is required, unless you only wish to know the basic theory. You do not need to be a code ninja; for the areas likely to be understood only by more experienced programmers, I'll be sure to describe concepts in greater detail. Additionally, some basic understanding of networking might help, given that this is a packet sniffer and all. All of the code examples presented here have been tested on FreeBSD 4.3 with a default kernel.
Getting Started: The format of a pcap application
The first thing to understand is the general layout of a pcap sniffer. The flow of code is as follows:
  • We begin by determining which interface we want to sniff on. In Linux this may be something like eth0, in BSD it may be xl1, etc. We can either define this device in a string, or we can as pcap to provide us with the name of an interface that will do the job.
  • Initialize pcap. This is where we actually tell pcap what device we are sniffing on. We can, if we want to, sniff on multiple devices. How do we differentiate between them? Using file handles. Just like opening a file for reading or writing, we must name our sniffing "session" so we can tell it apart from other such sessions.

How do you know x won't change? I certainly can write a class where it does. The key issue is that x must be hashable. If it is (including the constraint that a==b implies hash(a)==hash(b)), then I agree that this transformation would work. I'm also uncertain that this would give any speed-up. I assume you like. I'm not convinced that the dictionary lookup + computed goto is necessarily faster than the compare sequence; this could be established only by implementing it (you don't need to implement the parser/compiler aspects, just the changes to ceval.c). Hmm. How is that supposed to work ? I would like the compiler to generate different code for these "switch" statements. It would also have to generate the hash table and store it in the constants. >
