  • Snoring
Snoring is an age-old problem with many social consequences, including marital discord , separate bedrooms, even separation and divorce, and angry neighbors . Snoring usually occurs due to vibration of the tissue in the throat, usually while the patient is breathing through the mouth. A vibrating uvula Although in itself snoring is not necessarily dangerous, it may be a symptom of sleep apnea or other sleep disorders condition s which can be very dangerous. Until recently , the treatment for snoring has included such techniques as behavioral modification, weight loss, dental devices, nasal strips, drugs, and major (painful) surgery. But now, the treatment for snoring and many cases of sleep apnea may be a simple office procedure.
  • Sleep Apnea
    • Sleep apnea is usually obstructive; that is, the breathing passage is blocked between the nose and the voice box. If sleep apnea is severe enough, the oxygen in the bloodstream which is reaching the brain and other vital organs may fall to dangerous levels. The site(s) - or point(s) - of obstruction must be diagnosed before treatment can begin.

Sleep Apnea
What is sleep apnea?
Sleep apnea is a serious sleep problem. If you have it, you stop breathing for more than 10 seconds at a time many times while you sleep. Another term for this problem is obstructive sleep apnea. Sleep apnea affects between 2 and 10% of people. It is more common in men than in women. It is also more common in people who are overweight, but there are many people with normal weight who have sleep apnea.
How does it occur?
During normal sleep, throat muscles relax. If, when this happens, there is too little room inside your throat, or too much tissue pressing on the outside of your throat, your airway can become blocked. This blockage stops the movement of air and the amount of oxygen in your blood drops. The drop in oxygen causes the brain to send a signal for you to wake up so that you open up the airway in your throat and start breathing again. If you have sleep apnea, this cycle may repeat as often as 50 or more times an hour. Generally you will not remember waking up but the many arousals will make you sleepy the next day.

Sleep Apnea
Sleep apnea is a common disorder in which breathing stops during sleep for 10 seconds or more, sometimes more than 300 times a night. The hallmark of the disorder is excessive daytime sleepiness and compromised quality of life, including significant social and emotional problems. The two types of sleep apnea "obstructive" and "central" are thought to have different mechanisms. Obstructive sleep apnea may represent cessation of breathing due to mechanical blockage of the airway, while central sleep apnea appears to be related to a malfunction of the brain's normal signal to breathe. Symptoms of sleep apnea may include restless sleep, loud, heavy snoring (often interrupted by silence and then gasps), falling asleep while driving and/or during the day (at work, watching TV, etc.), morning headaches, loss of energy, trouble concentrating, irritability, forgetfulness, mood or behavior changes, anxiety or depression, obesity, and decreased interest in sex. Not all people with sleep apnea experience all of these symptoms and not everyone who has these symptoms has sleep apnea. However, it is recommended that people who are experiencing even a few symptoms visit their physician for evaluation. Prompt and proper diagnosis of sleep apnea is an important first step to treating the disorder. Potential consequences of sleep apnea include hypertension, coronary artery disease, myocardial infarction, stroke, psychiatric problems, impotence, cognitive dysfunction, memory loss, and death.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea
Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when breathing stops during sleep, perhaps hundreds of times a night. About 75% of the patients seen each year at sleep disorders laboratories are diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). OSA usually occurs because tissues of the throat and mouth improperly block the airway. Less common is another type of sleep apnea, central sleep apnea, which appears to be related to a malfunction of the brain’s normal signal to breathe. Sleep-disordered breathing is strongly associated with high blood pressure, coronary heart disease, heart attack and stroke, as well as compromised quality of life and significant social and emotional problems. OSA is very common in children, occurring with symptoms such as poor attention, behavioral problems, delayed growth and snoring. Often, enlarged tonsils and adenoids (growths of lymph node tissue in the upper throat) are the cause. Abnormal snoring and excessive sleepiness are two of the major symptoms of sleep apnea. The result of sleep apnea is frequent awakening, which causes restless sleep. Sleep apnea sufferers may report not feeling refreshed when they awake in the morning or frequently falling asleep during the day, which can be very dangerous when driving. Many patients with sleepiness are unaware of a problem. A careful history may be required to differentiate sleepiness from OSA.

The Story of a Sleep Apnea Victim

Mac users: please note that our site is optimized for the Safari browser Sleep Sleep apnea Originally Published: May 10, 1996 / Updated on: September 10, 2004 Dear Alice, This isn't much of a question, but I'm definitely in search of an answer. I suffer from sleep apnea. My throat collapses when I go to sleep. I have to strap an air pump (CPAP) to my face at night. I've been wearing this thing for almost two years. Without it I awake an average of 78 times an hour. Although I'm much better with the CPAP, I feel as though this disease is still going to kill me eventually. The CPAP seems so barbaric. Isn't there any new solutions to my problem? — Very Tired Indeed Dear Very Tired Indeed, This roller coaster sleep pattern leads to a loss of energy, concentration, and productivity, and an inability to stay awake during less active tasks, such as reading, watching television, and driving. In serious cases, the continuous oxygen deprivation caused by sleep apnea can lead to high blood pressure, heart attacks, strokes, and even sudden death. There may be a genetic component to this disorder as it often occurs within families. What can be done to better manage or cure sleep apnea? In less severe cases, weight loss and a reduction in alcohol and other sedative use before bedtime has been a successful remedy. Sleep experts also recommend that people with sleep apnea should not sleep on their backs; sometimes sewing a tennis ball into the back of a nightshirt can prevent this from occurring. In more serious cases similar to yours, continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines blow air through a mask into the body during sleep. Although this treatment has also helped many people, some cannot tolerate this method, and may benefit from oral devices that change the position of mouth structures during sleep.

First described in 1965, sleep apnea is a breathing disorder characterized by brief interruptions of breathing during sleep. It owes its name to a Greek word, apnea, meaning, "want of breath.” There are two types of sleep apnea: central and obstructive . Central sleep apnea, which is less common, occurs when the brain fails to send the appropriate signals to the breathing muscles to initiate respiration. Obstructive sleep apnea is far more common and occurs when air cannot flow into or out of the person's nose or mouth even though efforts to breathe continue. In a given night, the number of involuntary breathing pauses or "apnea events" may be as high as 20 to 30 or more per hour. These breathing pauses are almost always accompanied by snoring between apnea episodes, although not everyone who snores has this condition. Sleep apnea can also be characterized by choking sensations. The frequent interruptions of deep, restorative sleep often lead to early morning headaches and excessive daytime sleepiness.

The Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the British Freediving Association (AIDA UK) will be held at the National Diving and Activity Centre in Chepstow, Monmouthshire on Sunday 18th September at 2pm. All BFA members and prospective members are invited to come along, voice your opinions on freediving within the UK and hear our plans for next year. We will also be inviting applications for positions on the BFA committee for 2005/2006 and opening the voting on those positions. Voting will close and the new committee will be announced one month later. If anyone would like to freedive with SaltFree on the morning of the AGM, please contact Sam Kirby at sam@saltfreedivers.com . Divers will need to be on site by 9.30am and we will be out of the water in time for the AGM. If you fancy coming down for the whole weekend, Saturday is our "Records Day" where several people are coming along to attempt UK and other National Freedive Records.
