Nighttime dying linked to sleep apnea from brain cell loss
UCLA study scrutinizes loss of cells in brain's breathing command-post
Aim to grow old and die peacefully in your sleep? Be careful what you wish for. A new UCLA study suggests that some people die in their sleep because they stop breathing due to a cumulative loss of cells in the brain's breathing command-post. The online edition of Nature Neuroscience reports the findings on Aug. 7. "We wanted to reveal the mechanism behind central sleep apnea, which most commonly affects people after age 65," explained Jack Feldman, principal investigator and Distinguished Professor of Neurobiology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. "Unlike obstructive sleep apnea – in which a person stops breathing when their airway collapses central sleep apnea is triggered by something going awry in the brain's breathing center." Feldman's team had earlier pinpointed a brainstem region they dubbed the preBötzinger complex (preBötC) as the command post for generating breathing in mammals, and identified a small group of preBötC neurons responsible for issuing the commands. This time, the researchers studied the role of the preBötC neurons in generating breathing during sleep, and what would happen if these brain cells were destroyed.

Obstructive sleep apnea
Definition: Sleep apnea is a condition characterized by episodes of stopped breathing during sleep. See also sleep disorders
Alternative Names: Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome; Sleep apnea syndrome; Sleep apnea
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: In normal conditions, the muscles of the upper part of the throat keep this passage open to allow air to flow into the lungs. These muscles usually relax during sleep, but the passage remains open enough to permit the flow of air. Some individuals have a narrower passage, and during sleep, relaxation of these muscles causes the passage to close, and air cannot get into the lungs. Loud snoring and labored breathing occur. When complete blockage of the airway occurs, air cannot reach the lungs. For reasons that are still unclear, in deep sleep, breathing can stop for a period of time (often more than 10 seconds). These periods of lack of breathing, or apneas, are followed by sudden attempts to breathe. These attempts are accompanied by a change to a lighter stage of sleep. The result is fragmented sleep that is not restful, leading to excessive daytime

Freediving is a way to visit this fantastic environment with nothing but a deep breath of air. There are in fact people who have been down to more than 170 meters ( 560 feet) and have been under the surface for almost 9 minutes . What we want to do is try to in form about what freediving is and how to go about it safely. There are risks evolved that you should be aware of.
We also present the current records and recordholders which we update frequently. Here you can find out who all the good freedivers are, and very good TRAINING TIPS from some of them.
Freediving

Freediving, originally referred to as skin-diving, is in essence how you unite yourself with the world under the surface. The only thing you need to practice this sport is a breath of air but, of course, most people use a mask with snorkel and fins.

Sleep Apnea
  • What Is It? Symptoms Diagnosis Expected Duration ... Additional Info
  • What Is It? Sleep apnea is a disorder that causes people to stop breathing for short periods during sleep. These periods are called apneas. They usually last between 10 and 30 seconds. In severe cases, apneas can happen many hundreds of times each night, disrupting the person's ability to get a good night's sleep. This makes the person less alert during the day, which can lead to accidents. People with untreated sleep apnea are up to seven times more likely to be involved in motor vehicle accidents. People with untreated sleep apnea also are more likely to develop high blood pressure.
